Networking Layer for the Evolution of Maritime Ports Into a Smart Environment
The International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
The maritime transport is playing an increasing and critical role on the worldwide trade; because it guarantee the delivery of 80% of the goods worldwide. The maritime ports are the articulation of the maritime transports, and therefore are responsible of (long delay in the ports means high risks for goods deterioration, higher costs for the logistics companies, longer occupation of containers for containers management companies, etc. In recent years some publications are talking about smart ports. In this paper we take some of the most recent models of smart port, and propose some extensions by considering the recent recommendations from International Maritime Organization (IMO), which have been translated and issued legislation frameworks by the European Union, such as maritime environment monitoring, air pollution, etc. In the recent years, any "smart" environment is modeled through an Internet-of-Things (IoT) layered model. Thus, we discuss the model of smart port environment as IoT layered model, where the networking/communications layer plays the core role. Furthermore, we analyse the possible networking technologies which could support the different smart domains building the smart port environment. This is achieved by first defining the different sub-layers of the hierarchical communication layer, and then comparing different technologies for building the broadband mobile sub-layer.
Developing a smart port architecture and essential elements in the era of Industry 4.0
Maritime Economics & Logistics, 2022
With rapid technological innovations spurred by the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0), today's seaports are pressured to transform the way they operate in order to handle traffic flows. Such a transformation calls for the development of a smart port system. Despite the growing interest in smart ports, their underlying framework, architecture, and potential ramifications for port productivity are not well documented in the maritime logistics literature. To help port communities better comprehend smart port concepts and successfully develop a smart port within a global supply chain, this paper synthesizes core smart port concepts, designs underlying architecture, and proposes specific milestones for monitoring the smart port development project. We use content analysis and then we identify key success factors (e.g., essential components for the smart port architecture, value propositions, smart port performance metrics) for the establishment and sustainable growth of the smart port. The paper also aims to provide practical guidance for dealing with smart port challenges and opportunities. Our research reveals that a smart port reduces port-user response time, improves port asset utilization, and enhances maritime logistics visibility by automating and integrating end-to-end port operations digitally without human intervention.
Smart ports: towards a high performance, increased productivity, and a better environment
International Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering (IJECE), 2023
Ports are currently competing fiercely for capital and global investments in order to improve revenues, mostly by improving performance and lowering labor costs. Smart ports are a fantastic approach to realize these elements since they integrate information and communication technologies within smart applications, ultimately contributing to port management improvement. This leads to greater performance and lower operational expenses. As a result, several ports in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America have gone smart. However, there are a lot of critical factors to consider when automating port operations, such as greenhouse gas emissions, which have reached alarming proportions. The purpose of this study is to define the most essential tasks conducted by smart ports, such as the smart ship industry, smart gantry and quayside container cranes, transport automation, smart containers, and energy efficiency. Furthermore, it gives a model of the smart port concept and highlights the critical current technologies on which the ports are based. Each technology's most significant contributions to its development are noted. This technology is compared to more traditional technologies. It is hoped that this effort would pique the curiosity of fresh researchers in this sector.
Towards a Smart Port: The Role of the Telecom Industry
Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations. AIAI 2020 IFIP WG 12.5 International Workshops, 2020
Transformation is not only today's trend but also a reality. Ports could not be excluded from that change. A transformation process has been initiated in order to change their operational structure, and the services they offer. Artificial Intelligent and Data oriented services push the services's landscape beyond the traditional ones that are currently used. The scope of this paper is to analyze and scrutinize the opportunities that are risen for Telecommunications/Information and Communication Technology (ICT) providers at ports. These opportunities are the stepping stone towards the transformation of ports for the future. This work in progress is under the DataPorts project that is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No. 871493.
Shipping Digitalization and Automation for the Smart Port
Supply Chain - Recent Advances and New Perspectives in the Industry 4.0 Era [Working Title], 2022
Shipping, like most industries, is undergoing a digital transformation process which influences existing business models and operational practices, in a multifaceted way. Today, the shipping business context has been changing to incorporate further social demands, environmental, innovation and sustainability priorities, into fundamental shipping strategies, while taking advantage of technological advancements. In the era of Industry 4.0, which constitutes a recent evolution of advanced communications and information technologies and further promotes sustainable, human-centric, and resilient business development strategies, shipping and port entities need to embrace a broader perspective and a deeper understanding of various elemental technologies, namely: Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Cloud Computing, Big Data, and Physical Internet, in addition to core maritime logistics matters. This chapter proposes a descriptive framework of shipping digitalization and port automation, wh...
A new Approach to Sharing of Data in Ports and its Hinterland
The INCA (INternet of CArgo) concept addresses the situation in ports and its hinterland where many different systems and IT solutions needs to share data. There are many initiatives in this area but most of them propose building complex IT platforms or implementing new advanced standards at high cost.
Smart Seaports Logistics Roadmap
2016
In the digital world, a smart concept became an essential feature for port organizations to serve as intelligent hubs in the world transport networks. Smart ports are the trend for the future long-term strategies. Henceforth, ports aims at contributing to sustainable growth by establishing the appropriate conditions for the adoption of new management energy models based on low environmental impact and triggering innovation of both technologies and processes. The scope of this paper is to examine three main issues of smart ports; smart port arctic logistics roadmap, smart port challenges and obstacles in arctic port areas, and the criteria and Key Performance Indicators (KPI) guiding the assessment of ports against this concept. The main purpose is to develop a smart arctic logistics roadmap for the future.
Maritime Technology and Research
Taking advantage of the benefits associated with the fourth stage of the industrial revolution--quite often termed as the “era of digitalization” in the wider literature--has become a main priority for ports globally, as part of their further development. The implications of smart technologies on the sustainable development of the ports have not been adequately addressed by the existing literature and it is exactly this gap that this study aims to fulfil. This paper aims to provide an overview of the innovative technologies adopted by a small number of smart ports around the world and highlight their link to sustainable development by employing an exploratory review of various sources. The design features of the smart ports identified by the existing literature have formed the basis for the development of a conceptual framework used in this paper for the analysis of the case of the Port of Gothenburg--the largest Scandinavian port, both in terms of number of visits and volume of car...
NEW TRENDS IN PORT STRATEGIES. EMERGING ROLE FOR ICT INFRASTRUCTURES
New trends in port strategies are emerging around the world in the last decade: port authorities are modifying their nature and their role, acquiring more and more an active role in the governance of logistics systems and often adopting managerial and entrepreneurial behaviours. Not all the national legal frameworks are adapting in the same way and at the same time to the out coming context, and port authorities of different countries actually have different tools and capabilities to face the global competition. One common supporting tool of port authorities evolution and strategies could be identified into ICT infrastructures. Based on this hypothesis, the paper aims at highlighting potential opportunity of an interoperability platform for interconnecting existing ICT modules and its implications in terms of port authorities' competitiveness. Corridor 24 Genoa Rotterdam is the concrete case analysed within the context of the European Research Project MoS 24 "ICT based comodality promotion center for integrating PP24 into the Mediterranean MoS Motorways of the sea".
