Polyglot: Jurnal Ilmiah, 2017

In the world of education, it is important that the teacher considers that the knowledge that students had learned in school can be applied in the different situation either when students still in school or when they are faced with real inability to apply the knowledge is called lack of conceptual understanding. The researcher then decided to use Problem Based Learning (PBL) to overcome this problem. The aim of this research is to found out whether the implementation of PBL can increase student's conceptual understanding and the effective ways to implement PBL in order to increase student's conceptual understanding. This research is a Classroom Action Research, and this was a two cycle research where the research used student's written test, student's questionnaire, student's interview, teacher's interview, teacher's observation form, and journal reflection as instruments to measure student's conceptual understanding and the implementation of PBL based on the Christian perspective. Based on the analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that the implementation of problem-based learning could increase students' conceptual understanding based on the Christian perspective.

The Efficacy of Employing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Approach as a Method of Facilitating Students' Achievement

The goal of this study to expand a version to develop a model to examine the effectiveness of using a problem based learning (PBL) approach as a method of facilitating students' achievement, and incorporating the literature of PBL approach for educational purpose. Therefore, this research hypothesizes that use PBL approach effect on students' learning motivation, students 'thinking, students' learning difficulties on learning, students' learning style, and students' learning skills that in turn, affect students' achievements. To achieve the research goal, the research employed a questionnaire as the main data collection method and dispensed it to 88 university students all of whom use PBL approach. The findings were obtained via a quantitative research method, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). This research found a significant relationship between PBL approach with students' learning motivation, students 'thinking, students' learning difficulties on learning, students' learning style, and students' learning skills that in turn, affect students' achievements. Hence, the research indicates that PBL approach enhances the students' achievements, and allows to sharing knowledge, information and discussions, and therefore, we recommend students to utilize PBL approach for education purpose and should have encouraged them through lecturers at universities. The effect of problem-based learning on students’ learning attitude in tertiary level education: A case study of the college system in Bangladesh

Journal of university teaching and learning practice, 2021

This study was initiated to explore the effect of problem-based learning on learners' attitudes among tertiary level students. The decision to concentrate on a sample from Bangladesh was motivated largely by that country's poor record to date in pedagogical innovation, meaning that the experiment could take place in the closest thing to an uncontaminated laboratory as this type of research permits. That students' attitudes towards learning were positively influenced by PBL to a statistically significant degree can be taken as a decisive endorsement of the method as a vehicle for teaching and learning. Clearly, the students who made up the sample have an appetite for constructivist approaches that place them at the center and redefine the teacher as a facilitator, rather than an orator. As a contribution to the debate about future educational directions in Bangladesh, this is highly persuasive. Practitioner Notes Practitioner Notes 1. Traditional methods do not tend to engender a positive attitude in students and so are to be either avoided or, at least, used judiciously. At most, they should be part of a mix that includes more student-centred approaches, such as problem-based learning. 2. Students respond best to constructivist approaches that build on current knowledge. The best PBL projects are those that draw on material to which they can easily relate, so lesson planning should be based around real world issues that, as far as possible, touch on areas of personal interest for the students. 3. Teachers should reconceptualise themselves as facilitators of learning, their role being to guide students towards meaningful solutions, rather than as experts committed to only one outcome. The teacher, then, should set the problem, advise on methodology and monitor progress, but without dictating a direction. 4. PBL projects should be planned to allow for genuine problemsolving in a collaborative environment. Students should be given opportunities to claim ownership of their work. 5. Assessment should take into account the process as much as the outcome and there should not, ideally, be only a single outcome: the purpose of problem-solving should be to give students the chance to undergo a process of discovery.
