The Use of ICT in Nigerian Universities: A Study of Kaduna State University, Kaduna.
The information and communication technology revolution is comprehensive through the world and the storm has even caught up with developing countries like Nigeria and Ghana. Information and communication technologies have facilitate easy access to highly valuable and massive amount data that aid the teaching, learning and research activities in an academic background through online learning facilities and other corresponding ICT facilities. The study investigates the use of Information and communication technology in Nigerian universities with specific focus on Kaduna state university. The study tries to know what type of information and communication technology facilities are available in the university, the main outline of usage of information and communication technology and finally conclude to what scope the potential clients are aware of the availability of various Information and communication technology facilities in the university library. A survey was conducted using questionnaire as the research instrument with closed ended questions. The questionnaire was distributed to both learners and instructors in the university. The current study find that only few clients uses information and communication technology often notwithstanding making their academic work easier and more useful. Due to high number of the student population, financial issues and other partialities, the students choose to go to business centres inside the university instead of going to university library for their assignments, researches and other projects. Nevertheless the occurrence of ICT facilities must be acknowledge but the student lack awareness toward the available facilities freely accessible within the university library. Also, the clients acknowledge the encouraging impact of these facilities on teaching, learning and other research activities. The study further recommend that information technologies of the university should be improved to meet the global standard in properties to facilitate capable teaching and learning in an academic background and also as a matter of urgency the university management should create awareness of the general public of the availability of ICT in the university. The university management would companion with private business centres within university premises and give them better and enable environment since they also contribute greatly to the academic environment. There is an essential need for placement of both staffs and students the available, purposes and use Information and communication technologies so that the available facilities will be fully developed and standby generator or new modern solar system should be provided to the university library to avoid power outage.
Information communication technologies and university administration in Nigeria
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Invention (IJHSSI), 2018
The place of Information and Communication Technologies in enhancing university administration cannot be over-emphasised. However, there are many challenges facing the use of ICTs in the effective and efficient delivery of services in universities in Nigeria. The main objective of the paper is, therefore, to examine the challenges and proffer sustainable solutions. The General System Theory was adopted as the theoretical framework for the study. The research is descriptive and quantitative. Sources of data were primary and secondary while a well-structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from one hundred and seventy four (174) respondents, randomly selected out of an estimated population of three thousand, five hundred (3,500) ICT users, comprising academic, non-teaching staff and students from three universities (federal-1, state-1 and private-1) in Ogun State, reputed to be the only state with the highest number of universities in Nigeria. Relevant hypotheses were tested and the data were presented using tables and percentages. Chi-Square and ANOVA statistical tools were used to analyse the data. Findings show that the challenges facing the use of ICTs in the universities include high cost of ICTs, low computer-literacy among university staff and students, epileptic power supply, absence of ICT policies and poor political-will to implement such policies, where they exist. The paper concludes that the prospects are bright and that more universities would embrace the use of ICTs in their operations when the identified challenges are tackled.
The Internet has emerged as arguably the most visible component of the dynamic developments of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The rate of adoption of the Internet exceeds that of all technologies before it. Its uses range from communication and publishing to research. It has impacted, albeit differentially, every sector, from manufacturing and services to education. Higher education is particularly crucial to long running economic growth because it is the source of knowledge workers and an important source of inventive outputs. The role of universities as centers of research and diffusion of findings will become increasingly important in the 21st century. The focus of this paper is on the usage of ICTs on the higher education sector, particularly the impact of the Internet. Relatively little is known about the impact of ICT on the higher education sector of the developing world. This research is focused on how undergraduate students of Nigeria and Mozambique use ICT, in particular the Internet and what the Internet is used for among the students.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Teaching and Learning in Tertiary Institutions in Yobe-State, Nigeria 1. Introduction The integration of information and communication technology (ICT) into the educational sector has contributed a great deal to the development and transformation of the teaching and learning process, from the primitive method to virtual interaction between teachers and learners. This means that knowledge was imparted smoothly without the need for the physical presence of teachers and learners, making teaching and learning easier and simpler by making learners more involved in the learning process and knowledge-creating participants than mere recipients of knowledge (Bala and Suleiman 2020). The use of ICT makes tertiary institutions more efficient and productive by providing a variety of tools and facilities that will enhance educational activities for teachers. E-learning is one of the most common ways of using ICT to provide education for both on-campus and off-campus learners through online teaching offered through web-based systems. (Yusuf, 2005). By offering a range of instruments and facilities that will improve educational activities for teachers, the use of ICT makes tertiary institutions more competitive and efficient. E-learning is one of the most popular ways to use ICT to provide education for both on-campus and off-campus learners through online instruction provided through web-based systems. (Yusuf, 2005). ICT has been used in developed countries for many years and has been successfully integrated into educational system. Unfortunately, since its emergency in Nigeria, banking industry, and stock

Although, the roles of educators in higher institutions in Nigeria have been expanded to include the use of information and communication for teaching and learning, there seems to be less achievement in this area. This paper argues that ICTs for educational purposes, such as to aid teaching and learning and for research activities including collaborative learning is sacrosanct, if they must be compared favourably with their counterparts at the global arena. This study focused on the clarification on the concept of ICT, the status of ICT use for teaching and learning in higher education in Nigeria, technology for teaching and learning and the challenges in the adoption of ICT in teaching and learning for quality higher education in Nigeria. Nigerian higher institutions which have been ranked higher on the African continents, have not done well in competing globally due to certain challenges. This reveals a gap which needs to be filled by taking necessary steps in putting Nigerian higher institutions forward in the international scholastic arena. This paper argues that proper use of information and communication technology for teaching and learning can be used to fill this gap in higher institutions in Nigeria. The paper concludes that, although technology provides greater opportunities for higher institutions in Nigeria to propel teaching and learning processes, majority of the higher institutions in developing countries possess basic ICT infrastructure. The paper recommended that ICT integration in Nigerian higher institutions must be adopted to support curricular goals of the institutions for higher quality education.

Education is the bedrock of development of every society and has had to evolve with time and practices. The latest of the changes to education process is integration of information communication technology, which is a germane aspect of the 21 st century. This has made countries to formulate and implement policies that targets proper integration of ICT into their education sectors. Nigeria approved its own national policy on ICT in education in 2019 and one of the major objectives is to facilitate the development of technical infrastructures required to improve education service delivery. This work evaluated the achievement of this objective since the approval of this policy and its implication for teaching quality in public universities in the country. This research adopted both quantitative and qualitative research methods, thus making the findings robust. This study finds that there is a gap between the availability of the technical infrastructures and the policy expectations in this regard. The study thus recommends that some elements of the policy be reviewed, particular ones that concern finance and monitoring, because paucity of the former will impede availability of infrastructure and inadequacy of the latter will give room for misplaced priorities and misappropriation of the resources allotted to developing ICT infrastructure in the universities.
The role of information and communication technology in the development of tertiary education in Nigeria is the central focus of this paper. The paper explores ways to harness the power of information and communication technology for the development of tertiary education in particular, and education in general in Nigeria. Recognizing that technology could be a key component of education, the paper examines the recent rapid growth of the information and communication technology and some of the implications of the technology for the growth and development of tertiary education in Nigeria. Modern electronic educational technology being an important part of society today, the paper demonstrates that e-learning, instructional technology, ICT in education, multimedia learning, computer-based instruction, computer-based training, web-based learning, virtual learning environments, m-learning and the other related terms are all part of educational technology which is trending in Nigeria’s tertiary education.
This paper describes the rationale for the deployment of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) in learning environment of Higher Education (HE) institutions with a specific focus on the emerging Nigerian Developing Economy (DE). Productive integration of ICT depends on the way it is deployed and positioned. Many HE institutions in the DE has invested heavily in the use of ICT for teaching and learning, however, its impact has been minimal hence the need for redress. ICT facilitates and improve students’ knowledge and promote positive attitude to learning. Academic planners need to provide proactive support in the usage of ICT and E-learning. Significantly, If DE students are to compete with their counterparts in the developed world, effort must be made to develop their ICT abilities. Sadly, many HE Institutions in DE have invested in the use of ICT but its benefits are not fully manifested. Choosing a teaching and learning method is not a passive process; stakeholders are expected to provide additional ICT skills given the complex dynamics of the job market and the increasing needs for multitasking workforce. This article contributes significantly to knowledge by identifying in coherent manner the various methodological approaches, personal development and supportive learning environment that are mandatory for sustaining HE development in the DE. A Review of Obstacles of ICT Usage in Nigerian Tertiary Educational Institutions
International Journal of Human Resource Studies
The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in learning institutions is an order of the day in various parts of the world. This primarily has to do with its significance in teaching and learning on one hand, and its associated obstacles on the other. ICT been in used in Nigerian higher institutions for decades, steadily making progress, however, many obstacles were noted in the literatures. This study is conceptualized to review ICT usage in Nigeria and the associated obstacles amongst tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study is asked to pinpoint these by extracting related literatures. The study identified obstacles such as inconsistent electricity supply, computer illiteracy, high cost of internet data and electronic services, fear of change, fear of redundancy, lack of adequate facilities and the issue of internet and electronic security. It is suggested that provision of consistent electricity supply, training and ICT refresher courses and establishment of ICT c...
