Abstract
The physical elements in the school have a discernible effect on learners’ academic performances and staff productivity. This study determined teachers’ and students’ knowledge of a healthy physical school environment (HPSE) and identified available facilities for HPSE. It also identified headteachers’ perceived strategies for improving the physical school environment. The study setting consisted of 18 private high schools located in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. A total of 102 teachers and 180 students participated in the study. Cross-sectional descriptive design was employed using quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Results showed that the majority of the participants had good knowledge of HPSE, few schools made use of pit latrines, but many did not have school clinics. Enforcement of policy on HPSE was suggested as strategies for improving the physical environment of schools.
