Energy skills as a driver to sustainable construction: current status, needs and proposed actions

During the last two decades, intensified actions toward energy efficiency in construction have provoked the implementation of a significant number of EU-funded and national projects that have developed knowledge in the field of energy-efficient (EE) design and construction of new and refurbished buildings. The current study contributes to state-of-the-art research of the best practices in the field of energy skills at the EU level. The methodology used comprised of desk research on the status of the development of energy skills in construction and business, the status of demand, the level of awareness, and the current training schemes and certifications which are offered. The research is based on published reports, publications, and surveys, resulting in the identification of over 500 sources of information relevant to EE skills. In this workshop, we discussed the targets, current status, and future plans of 10 Horizon 2020 projects—ARISE, BUSLeague, TRAIN4SUSTAIN, BIMzeED, SEEtheSkills, HP4ALL, INSTRUCT, PRO-Heritage, The nZEB Roadshow, and CraftEdu—about how to increase the number of skilled building professionals and/or blue-collar workers across the building design, operation, and maintenance value chain.

In this workshop we discussed the progress and results of six Horizon 2020 projects—INSTRUCT, BIMEET, The nZEB Roadshow, TRAIN4SUSTAIN, HP4All, and BUSLeague—about how to increase the number of skilled building professionals and/or blue-collar workers across the building design, operation, and maintenance value chain (designers, architects, engineers, building managers, technicians, installers, blue-collar workers including apprentices, and other building professionals), with a specific focus on the engagement of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Built Environment Sustainability Training Skills Needs Analysis of the Existing Buildings Sector

In order for Welsh businesses to benefit from the ‘green economy’, to enable them to make efficiencies in energy and resource use and to ensure that activity carried out in the name of ‘sustainability’ is truly contributing towards these targets, the existing built environment sector will require substantial new competencies over the next 10 years. The research has identified that a knowledge gap exists, perhaps more so than a skills gap, that could be filled by training provision through the BEST programme. Areas where the existing built environment industry can be particularly effective include: Energy / Carbon reduction Sustainable Design Processes Natural Resource Conservation Climate Adaptation Measures Communicating Behaviour Change Specific priority training needs within these areas over the next two years have been identified. The research indicates that the carbon reduction and low carbon agenda is currently of the highest priority. There are requirements for increased knowledge in this arena to ensure that the correct measures are undertaken to reduce carbon emissions whilst retaining workplace and building fabric integrity. There is also a clear focus on sustainable design routes to building and refurbishment that will reduce costs as well as carbon, where knowledge and competence within the industry is patchy. Leadership skills within the carbon and climate change arena are also highlighted, where those in a position to influence require the knowledge and capacity to ensure behaviour change throughout the industry and workforce.
