Power and Agriculture Crisis in Andhra Pradesh (original) (raw)

The paper examines the interrelationship between the power sector and agriculture in Andhra Pradesh, focusing on the causes behind the alarming rate of farmer suicides linked to agricultural debt and inadequate irrigation. It highlights a critical analysis of irrigation practices, especially the rise of well irrigation facilitated by subsidized power, which, while increasing productivity in challenging regions, has led to substantial financial burdens for farmers due to investments in borewells and ongoing costs. The findings suggest that rising power tariffs could jeopardize the livelihoods of many dependent on well irrigation.
