Brexit Impact on Employment within Hospitality Industry Windsor/Heathrow Marriott Case Study
The aim of this research is to examine the impact of Brexit on recruitment and employment within the Hospitality Industry through a case study performed at the Windsor/Heathrow Marriott hotel. The methodology followed in the study consisted in collecting primary qualitative data to gain an understanding of the underlying reasons and motivations for the hotel staff’ perceived impact of Brexit and to gauge the level of challenges facing the industry as well as the most effective strategy to counter the skills shortage should freedom of movement be restricted (Malhotra 2010, 171). The data were gathered through interviews and included personal accounts of experiences dealing with the prospects of Brexit. The subject makes a number of conclusions on the best practices and policies that may sustain businesses and help stabilize the employment climate.
Recruitment and retention in the European hospitality sector: a comparative study

This exploratory study documents recruitment practices and retention strategies of hospitality organisations that existed during the economic boom time drawing on data collected between 2004-2006 in 5 participating countries-Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Slovakia and the UK, with a follow up study in 2007. The results present data from 723 questionnaires received from 5 countries. The study revealed that generally speaking HRM practice within the hospitality industry was found to be neither strategic nor uniformly practiced. Larger hospitality enterprises are more likely to have a systematic approach to HRM. Recruitment practices within the hospitality sector in Ireland are variable. In the UK, for example interest in HRM in larger hospitality organisations is high, where the employment of specialist HR managers within the industry was becoming more common-however, knowledge of HR issues in smaller hospitality establishments remains poor. HRM in the Spanish hospitality sector has been influenced by two main factors: the rapid growth of the hospitality sector; the widening range of the services offered in some hotel chains and the larger number of small businesses or autonomous business-owners. Responsibility for recruitment was primarily the responsibility of the general manager. An average of 43.5% of respondents across all five European countries identified the general manager as having responsibility for recruitment and selection. The hotel owner was also identified by a large proportion of respondents (37.0%) as having responsibility for recruitment and selection. Surprisingly a low number of respondents (7.7%) placed responsibility for recruitment and selection with a specialist HR manager. This suggests that the hospitality industry has some way to go in making human resource issues a central priority.
London's Hospitality Workforce. Cultural diversity a choice or necessity?
The paper explores employers attitudes to British and migrant workers in hospitality. The number of hospitality operations in London, establish the capital as an interesting case study in exploring employer’s perceptions. A number of hospitality managers, academics and recruitment managers were interviewed and the findings suggest that they perceive that hospitality as not favoured as a primary career option amongst traditional British populations. An overwhelming number of immigrants are employed in London’s hospitality organisations both at entry level and managerial positions. The findings suggest that employers perceive a cultural barrier in the way employment in hospitality is viewed by British nationals. Employers and academics will need to double their efforts to ensure that the industry is not so poorly perceived by future generations of workers.
Polish Migrant Labor in the Hospitality Workforce: Implications for Recruitment and Retention

This article explores the implications for recruitment and retention in the hospitality industry as a result of the increasing involvement of Polish migrants in the workforce. The research draws on primary data collected using netnography, a modern version of ethnography, from a sample of Polish migrant workers. The merits and difficulties of using this technique are explored and the rationale for the use of netnography as an appropriate research method is outlined. A number of findings are discussed relating to job choice, methods of job seeking, English language issues, and status of the sector. Initial findings indicate it is common for Poles to find their first job in the UK in the hospitality sector due to low entry barriers, ease of access, the lack of required specific skills, high staff turnover, and demand for seasonal workers. The organizational implications of Brexit

This point-of-view article examines the organizational implications of the UK's exit from the European Union (Brexit). We identify the effects of Brexit on firms' transaction costs in cross-border trade within Europe and highlight the importance of EU residency to secure licenses to operate. We also address how access to skilled labor may be affected by rising restrictions to immigration. Finally, we discuss the possible implications of Brexit for the organizational design of British firms and foreign firms operating in the UK.
Internal labour markets in the UK hotel industry

This paper reports a study of how internal labour markets, operating in UK hotels that are part of a multinational hotel chain, impact on a range of organisational outcomes. The study examines the effects of three main dimensions of internal labour markets: job security, training, and opportunities for advancement; on the key organisational outcomes of job satisfaction, organisational commitment, and intention to leave, together with employee attitudes to work environment, co-workers, supervisor, guests, leadership, communication and organisational goal achievement. A range of human resource management actions in the operation of the hotel's internal labour market is discussed. The paper concludes that the operation of an internal labour market, underpinned by effective human resource policies and actions, is associated with high levels of work commitment and job satisfaction together with reduced intention to leave. Internal labour markets are also significantly associated with other employee attitudes, particularly in relation to the work environment, achieving organisational goals and communication.
The Hospitality Industry, Industrial Placement and Personnel Management
This article aims to identify the contribution that industrial placement makes and the experience it provides to the personnel management function in the hospitality industry. In particular, it considers the especially significant potential benefits in the areas of recruitment, training and labour turnover. Influential factors in these areas, correlated with the industrial placement experience, are examined and discussed. Recommendations are presented in terms of the personnel policies and practices which can lead to the realisation of the benefits identified and in the long term encourage enhancement of the personnel function. As the end of the twentieth and indeed the start of the twenty-first century approach the hospitality industry is facing a myriad of challenges. These challenges are arising as a result of the impact of technological developments on traditional business activity patterns, changes in the range of employment opportunities, and an increase in leisure time coupled with a diversiflcation of leisure demand [Leslie, 1988]. Furthermore, of more signiflcance are the qualitative and quantitative increases in demand generated through tourism-related activities [Leslie and McDowell, 1988]. An influential factor in many of these challenges is the demographic proflle of society and the projected shift in balance between the various age groupings. Although many of the challenges and societal trends will present opportunities for the industry, they will also present problems. One such problem is manpower resources. It is this area that poses the major problem, and presents the greatest opportunity, for the hospitality industry. The opportunity for the hospitality industry is to review and analyse current approaches to the personnel function, in particular policies for recruitment and training, and derive new, more effective and efficient policies.
The paper examines current debates on the impacts of Brexit on tourism in Britain. Brexit is a source of much concern and anxiety for British government, industry and tourists alike. The paper outlines and analyses some of the major impacts expected from the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union on the British inbound, outbound and domestic tourism. The methodology used is content analysis of secondary data in the form of government and industry surveys and reports and media articles on the expected and projected short and long-term impacts of Brexit. Results argue that although reducing EU-based regulations could have some positive implications for the British tourism industry, major areas of concern exit. Reduced access to EU programmes and funding is likely to impact domestic tourism heavily and limit participation and collaboration in international projects. Withdrawal of the UK from EU travel agreements is expected to have major consequences especially in terms of freedom of movement and security. As UK British hospitality and catering industries employ a considerable amount of EU nationals, a potential staff shortage is likely to impact service quality. Britain’s tourism destination image is also likely to be negatively impacted requiring increased marketing efforts. Reference: Sima, C.
