Abstract

Bali has many vernacular settlements and Desa (village) Julah forms the focus of this study. Unlike many other villages, the Desa Julah has uniquely maintained their traditional homes despite abundant opportunities to modernize. The objective of this article is to explain why this happens, especially in the case of the krama tegak – households which belong to the core members of the Julah community. A qualitative research approach addresses the spatial orientation of each housing compound and the use of site, for both buildings and the outdoor living environment. Supporting data have been acquired combining an extensive literature review; in-depth interviews and on- site physical observation. Results suggest that a Julah ’s traditional home is patrilineal, expressed in the building layout and the overall use of space.
