Piezoelectric ultrasonic micro/milli-scale actuators
2009
A growing demand for actuators with a volume of less than 1mm3 has driven researchers to produce a varied range of micro/milli-scale designs. By examining the underlying physics of the actuator operation we are able to demonstrate why piezoelectric ultrasonic actuators have the greatest potential to meet this need.

The field of piezoelectric actuators is really an interdisciplinary area, to which applied physicists and materials, electrical and mechanical engineers primarily converge. Because of the narrow knowledge of junior researchers, they occasionally publish misleading information, some sort of misconceptions, reflected in the delay of innovative developments of the next generation. This paper reviews the top 10 of these misconceptions, which are primarily related to the understanding of ionic displacement and strain, efficiency, the energy transmission coefficient, the constraint dependency of piezo-material properties, mechanical impedance matching, the piezoelectric damping mechanism, resonance and antiresonance, best-selling devices, and system design principles.

Amplified Piezoelectric Actuators: Static & Dynamic Applications
Amplified Piezoelectric Actuators offer the advantage of large deformation (up to 8%) and large strokes. Because of a prestress applied to the piezo ceramics and an efficient mechanical amplifier, they can produce large strokes both in static and dynamic conditions including resonance. For these reasons, these actuators can be used for micro positioning, structure shaping, structure active damping, vibration generation, fluid control functions or energy harvesting, in various domains such as spacecraft, aircraft, instrumentation, optics, machine tools & production equipment. This paper presents these actuators, explains their properties as regard amplification and dynamic forces, and describes some applications.
Introduction to Piezoelectric Actuators and Transducers
2003
Certain materials produce electric charges on their surfaces as a consequence of applying mechanical stress. The induced charges are proportional to the mechanical stress. This is called the direct piezoelectric effect and was discovered in quartz by Piere and Jacques Curie in 1880. Materials showing this phenomenon also conversely have a geometric strain proportional to an applied electric field. This is the converse piezoelectric effect. The root of the word "piezo" means "pressure"; hence the original meaning of the word piezoelectricity implied "pressure electricity."
Micro-vibration stage using piezo actuators
Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, 2013
In this paper, a novel micro-vibration stage composed of four piezo actuators and a flexure hinge is proposed and developed. Each piezo actuator is developed by a new type of stroke magnifying mechanism incorporated with a multi-stacked PZT (lead zirconate titanate) and it is capable of performing micro vibrating motion. The flexure hinge, used to connect the piezo actuators, is designed to reduce the mutual interference of the linear motion of piezo actuators between two orthogonal directions and realize the in-plane parallel kinematic 2D vibration. According to the experimental results, the micro-vibration stage can generate large vibration amplitude up to 100 m in two orthogonal directions independently at a frequency of 1100 Hz, and the vibration traces like line, circle and ellipse are acquired.
Integrated PiezoMEMS actuators and sensors
2010
PiezoMEMS resonators and transformers combine actuation and sensing on a single device platform. Current research on PZT based resonators is focused on optimizing the performance for both high quality factor, Q, and low motional resistance. Resonators in the low tens of MHz can also be utilized as piezoelectric resonant transformers and are predicted to achieve AC/DC gains in the range of 2 to 8. In addition, strain sensors positioned at the cantilever root of PiezoMEMS microflight actuators provide direct feedback of the motional response of the actuated wing.

High Speed Piezoelectric Microscanners with Large Deflection using Mechanical Leverage Amplification
Procedia Engineering, 2012
In this paper design and fabrication of high speed piezoelectric microscanners are presented. These single axis microscanners with 1 mm² mirror area feature thin-film PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) actuators with high piezoelectric coefficients [1] and mechanical leverage amplification to achieve large deflections. A parametric study by means of analytical modeling and FEM simulations has been performed. A SOI wafer consisting of 80 μm polysilicon and 1 μm SiO 2 on 725 μm silicon wafer is used as the substrate, whereon a 2 μm thick PZT layer is deposited by magnetron sputtering applied for the piezoelectric drives. Various micromirrors with resonant frequencies up to 56 kHz and extrapolated opt ·D products up to 60 deg·mm have been designed. Prototypes with these designs have been successfully fabricated in a bulk micromachining process.
