4th international workshop on ontologies and conceptual modeling (Onto.Com)

The theme of the 4th International Workshop on Ontologies and Conceptual Modeling is foundational ontologies and their meta-ontological choices. Expert representatives of major foundational ontologies have been invited to discuss and compare their meta-ontological choices within the context of a common case study. The workshop is aimed at exploring the ways in which different meta- ontological choices impact conceptual modelling in information systems.

A Meta-Conceptual Modeling Approach for Change Modeling in Applied Ontology

Formal ontologies are explicitly representation of domain knowledge. Ontology change management should ensure maintaining its consistency, so that its users can continue to cooperate and understand each other. This paper presents a meta-conceptual modeling approach for change modeling in the domain of applied ontology. This modeling approach makes use a mathematical structure to model ontologies and its changes in order to make possible the qualification of changes regarding its consistency. Actually, the paper focuses on the meta-conceptual modeling approach inspired by Guarino's formal ontology building process.

Ontologies and Formation Spaces for Conceptual ReDesign of Systems

This paper discusses ontologies, methods for developing them and languages for representing them. A special ontology for computational support of the Conceptual ReDesign Process (CRDP) is introduced with a simple illustrative example of an application. The ontology denoted as Global context (GLB) combines features of general semantic networks and features of UML language. The ontology is task-oriented and domain-oriented, and contains three basic strata – GLBExpl(stratum of Explanation), GLBFAct (stratum of Fields of Activities) and GLBEnv (stratum of Environment), with their sub-strata. The ontology has been developed to represent functions of systems and their components in CRDP. The main difference between this ontology and ontologies which have been developed to identify functions (the semantic details in those ontologies must be as deep as possible) is in the style of the description of the functions. The Making of a System of Systems: Ontology Reveals the True Nature of Emergence

A consistent, cohesive, and predictive framework that harbors the ontology and taxonomy of systems and system of systems is described that exposes the true nature of emergence as resulting from interactions that change physical objects. It is shown that the part-whole relationship is represented through the language syntax and semantics of integration and interoperability for systems and system of systems to build ontologies of objects and processes with primitives for objects of objects, functions, and behaviors; and for processes with primitives of cognitions, developing procedures, and modeling.

On the General Ontological Foundations of Conceptual Modeling

As pointed out in the pioneering work of [WSW99,EW01], an upper level ontology allows to evaluate the ontological correctness of a conceptual model and to develop guidelines how the constructs of a conceptual modeling language should be used. In this paper we adopt the General Ontological Language (GOL), proposed in [DHHS01], for this purpose. We discuss a number of issues that arise when applying the concepts of GOL to UML class diagrams as a conceptual modeling language. We also compare our ontological analysis of some parts of the UML with the one proposed in [EW01].
