Mental Images of Nurses with and without Patient with COVID-19: A Metaphor Study

The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of nurses who had COVID-19 disease and recovered and who were not sick through metaphors. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out with 50 nurses who were recovered from COVID-19 disease and 50 nurses who were not sick during the pandemic process who were working as nurses in a university hospital 3 months after the first wave of pandemics started in Turkey. The study is the qualitative research, which is as data collection technique, metaphors were used. The data collection form consists of six questions containing personal information and one metaphor question. The metaphors developed by nurses regarding the "COVID-19 disease" and the common features of these metaphors were tried to be determined. The content analysis was made. Results: It was determined that the answers given by the nurses were total of 75 metaphors in seven categories. It was determined that all of the metaphorical perceptions of the nurses regarding the "COVID-19 disease" were negative metaphoric perceptions, and the meanings of the metaphors that were seen as positive metaphors such as marriage, friend, life partner, love, hope under the emotions main theme, and relationship/moods sub-theme were negative when the content was examined. Conclusion: The results show that the metaphors expressed by the nurses include pessimism and negativity. This study reflects the ideas of nurses working with all their strength during the COVID-19 pandemic and puts forth the psychological state of nurses.

Covid-19 – An Unexpected Journey. Exploring Metaphorical Representations of Covid-19 among the medical professionals

ARGUMENTUM

Since December 2019 Covid-19 has spread throughout the world at a dangerously fast pace and soon become a global pandemic. The virus, which is often talked about metaphorically, is the most frequently discussed subject nowadays. Many linguists have investigated the metaphorical conceptualizations of the virus; nevertheless, no research is available on the conceptualization of Covid-19 among doctors. Hence, the present paper investigates the metaphorical conceptualization of Covid-19 among medical professionals. Furthermore, the paper compares the doctors' conceptualizations of the virus to those of laypeople (office workers) and offers a detailed elaboration on the differences in metaphor usage in two sample groups.

Individuals' conceptions of COVID-19 pandemic through metaphor analysis

The main purpose of the current study is to investigate the perceptions of individuals' living in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic through metaphor analysis. The current study employed the descriptive phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods. A total of 210 individuals living in Turkey (114 females (68.6%) and 66 males (31.4%)) participated in the current study through an online questionnaire on a voluntary basis. As the data collection tool, the online questionnaire form developed by the researchers was used. The collected data were analyzed within the framework of five-stage metaphor analysis. As a result of the analysis, a total of seven metaphor categories called being restricted, restlessness, uncertainty/obscurity, deadly/ dangerous, struggling, faith/destiny, and supernatural were obtained. These categories were subsumed under three themes called "anxiety/concern, risk, and faith".

Metaphoric Perceptions of Adolescents towards the Concept of Corona Virus (COVID-19)

This research was carried out to examine the metaphoric perceptions of adolescents regarding the concept of coronavirus (COVID-19).For this purpose, 60 adolescents (33 girls, 27 boys) studying at different grade levels of three high schools at different socio-economic levels determined by maximum diversity sampling from high schools in Erzincan city center were included in the research.With the questionnaireform developed for adolescents, “Coronavirus (COVID-19) ……is similar. Because………." was asked.The data obtained were analyzed by content analysis method. In this context, categories suitable for metaphors were created and the consistency of the categories with metaphors and descriptions was determined. Eight metaphors that are not suitable for the subject of the study are excluded from the study. University Students' Perception of COVID-19: A Metaphor Analysis

The purpose of this research is to reveal how university students perceive COVID-19 metaphorically during the pandemic process. The research was carried out with the state university students of the faculty of education in the Marmara region in the 2019-2020 academic year. In order to gather data for the research, an open-ended questionnaire was prepared to find out the views of the university students participating in the study about COVID-19. The students were asked what is comparably associated with Covid-19 in regard to their views. Students were asked to complete the sentences like "COVID-19 is like a …… Because ……..". This research is a phenomenological design study and it is one of the qualitative research methods. While analyzing the data, a data analysis method consisting of five steps was followed: coding and sorting, sample metaphor image compilation stage, category development stage, ensuring validity and reliability stage, and transferring metaphors with quantitative data. The obtained data was first grouped in line with the common features of the metaphors and categories were created. As a result of the research, the produced metaphors by university students gathered into ten groups as "freedom restriction", "spreading/contacting", "cause of death", "uncertainty", "enlightening-stimulating", "infectious and adhesive type", "enemy", "dangerous creature", "dirt-stain" and "COVID-19 being as an exam/test".

The Metaphoric Conceptualization of the Covid-19 Pandemic in the Online Press Releases of Lapor Covid-19 and Kominfo

This article seeks to describe the metaphoric conceptualization of the COVID-19 pandemic in the online press releases of Lapor COVID-19 and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo). More specifically, it seeks to 1) describe the metaphorical linguistic forms contained in the online press releases of Lapor COVID-19 and Kominfo, 2) identify the conceptual metaphors contained in the online press releases of Lapor COVID-19 and Kominfo, 3) describe the function of the metaphors contained in the online press releases of Lapor COVID-19 and Kominfo. Investigation of Primary School Children’s Views of Life During the COVID-19 Pandemic Through Metaphors

Global epidemics bring about problems that affect the lives of all individuals to a great extent. Although there have been global epidemics at different times, especially in the last two decades, primary school students are faced with such a situation for the first time. In order for students to manage this process in a healthy manner, it is important to see life through their eyes. It is necessary for both decision makers and practitioners to refer to students' own comments and statements in order to see the traces of the effects of the measures taken on behalf of the students on their views. Determining primary school students' views of the concept of life in this process is extremely important in terms of seeing and interpreting the process from their perspective and planning the continuation of the process. In the current study, the metaphors that primary school students developed regarding the concept of life during the pandemic and the explanations they brought to these metaphors were examined. In the study, it was determined that the students were able to explain the concept of life in the COVID-19 period using different metaphors and qualifiers. It was seen that metaphors were gathered under the categories of being restricted, disruption of order, feeling threatened, and despair. It was concluded that primary school students evaluate life predominantly negatively during the COVID-19 period.

Teachers’ Metaphoric Perceptions of COVID-19 and School in the Process of COVID-19

The study aims to reveal teachers’ perceptions of “Covid-19” and “School in the Covid-19 Process” through metaphors. The differences between the covid-19 perceptions of those who had Covid-19 disease in the participants’ families and those who did not were examined. Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Participants consist of a total of 100 teachers, 80 in Hatay and 20 in Gaziantep. The content analysis method was used. It was seen that teachers had 45 different metaphors in the perception of ‘Covid-19’ and were collected in eight categories. The most produced metaphors’ codes related with covid-19 were “Flu”, “Cancer”, “Illness”, “War”, “Flu-pneumonia”. Metaphorical perceptions of Turkish speakers on Covid-19 and Covid-19 vaccine

This study aims to investigate the perceptions of Turkish speakers on COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccines and determine their conceptualizations on these two concepts within a cognitive linguistic view. In order to reach this aim, a semi-structured survey with leading completion questions was applied between 13-20 January 2021to 246 Turkish native speakers. The data gathered from the survey are discussed in the light of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT). The results of the study show that Turkish people most frequently conceptualize COVID-19 as FORCE, ANIMAL, DISEASE, OBJECT and HEAT, and they show a negative evaluation towards the disease. On the other hand, they conceptualize COVID-19 vaccine most frequently as FORCE, OBJECT, DISEASE, VAGUE SITUATION and LIGHT, and have a positive evaluation towards the vaccine.
