Between the 15th and 17th centuries the nuns of Santa Caterina dei Sacchi and the Crociferi were the most significant agents of the spatial and socio-cultural dynamics in the area that today comprise the western part of the Fondamente Nuove, which remained undeveloped until the end of the 15th century. Relationships and rivalries between the two communities led to innovative endeavours such as the conquest and construction of a large part of the city, as well as its artistic-architectural renovation.
