Impact of turmoil on the handicraft sector of Jammu and Kashmir: An economic analysis

The handicrafts of Jammu and Kashmir (J & K), namely, shawls, namdhas, wooden art-ware, papier-mache, crewel embroidery etc. are well known, yet the export from this sector has been of an average of around Rs. 20 crore per annum. However, the handicraft industry occupies an important position in the economy of J & K, which provides a gainful employment to more than 3 lakh people and too has the potential to generate more employment in near future. In absence of large scale industries in the State, handicrafts remained a key economic activity from times immemorial. Due to the instable political conditions and turmoil in the state, the performance of this sector got deteriorated. As per regression analysis the output of the sector has declined to a large extent. THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENT IN PROMOTING HANDICRAFT INDUSTRY: A CASE STUDY OF KASHMIR

In India, the handicraft industry is the second largest rural employment industry after agriculture. Handicrafts are typically produced in the unorganised industry. There was an underestimation of the potential of the handicraft industry, which can play a significant part in the economy. Artisans face low wages, job inconsistencies, a lack of technological expertise, and a lack of new design. Several government and nongovernmental programmes are also in operation, but they are either ineffective or do not impact the majority of artisans. In the present study the researchers focuses on the present trends of different handicraft schemes implemented under the 12th five-year plan. The study also explores the ground reality of the existing government's programmes in Jammu and Kashmir towards promoting handicraft industry. The present research will help policymakers create appropriate initiatives to expand the handicraft industry and artisans, as well as change existing plans.

Impact of Economic Slowdown on Carpet Business in India with special ref to Bhadohi UP

The article tries to review, various research findings on the contributions made by handicraft sector in economic. Starting of this paper discusses the role of handicraft business in economic development, how handicraft sector can foster economic growth. It stresses the level of economic slowdown affects the life of persons who were basically dependent on carpet business at Bhadohi. Lastly it deals with the reforms taken during past few years in handicraft sector in India. It also lists some important estimates of survey done by different organizations on handicraft with their findings. Handicrafts industries in Odisha: Problems and prospects

Odisha is known for its rich culture and tradition all over the world. The handicrafts and cottage industries in the state made the foundation for spreading the craftsmanship of the state in different parts of the country. But the recent study shows these sectors are struggling for their survival. For the last five to six years the growth of handicrafts units are discouraging. In this paper an attempt is made to find out the problems and prospects of these sectors in present day context in Odisha. In our study we have taken three well known craft in the state, they are applique, filigree and pattachitra.We have taken two districts and three cluster regions for our study. Handicraft activities occupy an important position in the economic structure of J&K State. Being environment friendly, these activities are best suited to the state as they are more labour intensive and less capital intensive in nature, therefore having scope for employment generation at a large scale. The Kashmir handicraft products have earned worldwide fame for their attractive designs, functional utility and high quality craftsmanship. In absence of other manufacturing industries in the state, handicrafts remained a key economic activity from time immemorial. The artistic imagination and craftsmanship of the Artisans reflected through a wide range of products, has delighted the connoisseurs world over for centuries. Crafts like Shawls, Crewel, Namdha, Chain Stitch, Wood Carving, Paper Machie, Costume Jewellery, Kani Shawls and the Carpets hold a significant share in the overall production and export of the State. Silken carpets in particular constitute a specialty having no parallel in quality and design at national level and, therefore, occupy an important position in the international market. The handicraft sector of the state has great contribution towards foreign exchange earnings to the state and country in particular.

Handicrafts products are made by hand, often with the use of simple tools and generally artistic and traditional. It is sometimes in the current scenario called Handomen craft (women handicraft) because most of the handicraft products are related to women artisans, and women have an apex role in the handicraft products of the rich Indian cultural heritage of the country. An Evaluation of Handicraft Sector of J&K - A Case study of District Budgam

The handicraft activities are especially carried out in Kashmir Valley which is called the home of handicraft goods and has earned a unique place in the world of Handicraft scenario. This sector provides employment opportunities and great potential to generate gainful employment within and outside the state. It is labour intensive sector, need less capital and is eco-friendly. Therefore, the social cost of handicrafts is much less than big industries. Kashmiri handicrafts are famous within and outside of the country because of their quality, art and design. The advantage of being labour intensive sector, handicrafts can be established anywhere both in rural and urban areas and can be taken off as a subsidiary occupation. In this paper an attempt has been made to evaluate the growth, performance and problems faced by the handicraft industries during last two decades of turmoil in Kashmir valley with special focus on District Budgam.

The sector of handicraft is not only provides employment for the development of economy but it also acts as a sensible artistic approach of self-expression for the artisans. Handicrafts are matchless expressions as they represent culture, tradition, and heritage of a country. Handicraft sector is directly related to the economy of the rural India that means its growth, and downfall is the mirror image of rural economy as well as the economy as a whole In this paper, we have tried to analyze why the sector is one of the promising and productive sectors in India economy and what is the contribution of handicraft as foreign inflow to the Indian economy, and its growth, and decline through last fifteen years. Further, we have shown the growing foreign markets for Indian handicraft, and the leading foreign market for Indian art to export.

An Economic Analysis of the Handicraft Industry in District Chitral Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

This study carries out an economic analysis of the handicraft industry located in the surrounding of Gol National Park, District Chitral. For this purpose, primary data has been collected through a detailed questionnaire and interview schedule from 60 respondents consisting of 40 local producers, 10 retailers and 10 customers during October, 2019. For the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, correlation and ordinary least square techniques are used. The findings show that the weekly cost, revenue and profit of the 27 selected embroidery producers are Rs.251300, Rs.432990 and Rs.181690 respectively. Similarly, the total weekly cost, revenue and profit of 13 selected woodenware producers are Rs. 496200, Rs. 647000 Rs.150800 respectively. Similarly, a single retailer (on average) per month revenue from handicraft products is around Rs. 51600 and his/her products per day demand is approximately eight (8) items.
