Undergraduate nursing students’ stress sources and coping behaviours during their initial period of clinical training: A Jordanian perspective

Baccalaureate nursing students often experience high levels of stress during training that may result in psychological or emotional impairment during their professional life ultimately affecting the quality of patient care they provide. Clinical instructors provide the needed support and guidance for students to relieve stress and promote a positive clinical experience. The aim of this study was to identify the level and types of stress perceived by baccalaureate nursing students in Jordan in their initial period of clinical practice and to identify the coping strategies that students used to relieve their stress. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 181 nursing students' representative of second year undergraduate students from two universities in Jordan. Proportions and t-tests were used to analyze the data. The results showed that the source of stress for these students came mainly from assignment work and the clinical environment. The most common coping strategy used by students was problem-solving behaviour followed by staying optimistic and transference attention from the stressful situation to other things while avoidance was the least frequent used.

Stress and coping strategies among Saudi nursing students during clinical education

The purpose of this study was to determine the stress level and coping strategies among undergraduate Saudi female nursing students during their clinical education. In this study, a descriptive correlational cross-sectional design was used. The Demographic Information Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, and Coping Behavior Inventory were completed by 121 female Saudi undergraduate nursing students. The findings showed that stress from taking care of the patient subscale (M = 12.0, SD = 5.0) was ranked the highest mean among all perceived stress subscale scores. The most commonly used coping strategies among nursing students in clinical practice was a problem-solving strategy (M = 15.8, SD = 4.3). Facilitating the use of effective coping strategies in nursing students will promote quality of care for their patients.

Clinical practice is an important aspect of nursing education, where nursing students can learn and develop their psychomotor skills. The practical parts of nursing training programs were more stressful than the academic parts. The purpose to identify the sources of stress during clinical training and to determine the relationship between these stress sources and coping behaviors among nursing students at Arab American University Palestine (AAUP). A cross-sectional study, convenience sample with 131 participants from nursing students. The perceived stress level was low to medium with a mean of 47.2 (SD = 20.5). The most common type of stressors perceived was stress from assignment and workload (M= 1.71). The CBI participants’ coping behavior was moderate (M = 35.34. PERCEIVED STRESS AND COPING STRATEGIES OF BACCALAUREATE NURSING STUDENTS IN CLINICAL PRACTICE

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine baccalaureate nursing students’ stress, physio-psycho-social health and their coping strategies in clinical practice. Design: A cross-sectional and descriptive study design was used. Sample: All baccalaureate nursing students studying in Shree Guru Gobind Singh Tricentenary (SGT) University, who have clinical experiences, were invited to participate in this study. Total 205 baccalaureate nursing students’ were the sample for the research study. Methods: A self-administrative survey including demographics, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Physio-psycho-social Response Scale (PPSRS), and Coping Behavior Inventory (CBI) was used. The researcher approached the eligible subjects at the end of lectures. Those who were willing to participate in the study were required to sign a consent form, fill in the questionnaire and then return it to the researcher immediately. Results: The findings revealed that students perceived a moderate level of stress [mean (SD) = 2.10 (0.44)] and were in good physio-psycho-social health [mean (SD) =1.40 (0.65)]. The most common stressor came from ‘lack of professional knowledge and skills’ [mean (SD) = 2.34 (0.63)]. Emotional symptoms commonly occurred in response to clinical stress. Students frequently used transference coping strategies, which they found most effective in dealing with stress in clinical practice. Furthermore, year of study and level of stress were the two factors affecting students’ health. Year of study and stress from taking care of patients were the two predictors of the frequency of use of the problem-solving approach. Year of study, religion and stress from teachers and nursing staff affected the frequency of use of avoidance strategies. The frequency of four coping strategies, stress from peers and daily life, stress from taking care of patients and religion predicted the effectiveness of coping. Conclusion: The results provided valuable information for clinical educators and clinical staff in identifying students’ needs, facilitating their learning in the clinical setting and developing effective interventions to reduce the stress they encounter. Perceived Stress and Coping Strategies among Nursing Students at Ras Al Khaima Medical and Health Science University in the United Arab Emirates

Academic stress among college students has been a topic of interest for many years. College students especially freshmen, are particularly prone to stress due to the transitional nature of college life. They may have difficulty in adjusting to more rigorous academic expectations and the need to learn to deal with individuals of different cultural and beliefs. High perceived stress levels and lack of effective coping skills could be a barrier to achieve the challenges of the profession. Objective: assess perceived stress and coping strategies among nursing students at RAK Medical and Health Science University. Setting: The study was conducted in Ras Al Khaima medical and health science universities in nursing college. Subjects: The study subjects comprised 100 undergraduate nursing students at RAKMHSU, United Arab Emirates. Tools: They were socio-demographic profile, Perceived Stress Scale and Adolescent-Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences (ACOPE). Results: The majority of nursing students (91%) had low to moderate level of stress (49% and 42% respectively) and only 9% had high stress. The students adopted active coping strategies rather than avoidant and seeking professional support coping strategies. No significant difference between PSS level and gender. Conclusion: Nursing students at RAKMHSU had moderate levels of perceived stress; a major source of stress was academic load. The results show strong, negative correlations between perceived stress levels and coping strategies. Recommendations: Psych-educational program, faculty advising system and counseling services are recommended.

Coping strategies of nursing students for dealing with stress in clinical setting: A qualitative study

Background: Nursing students in the clinical setting experience a high level of stress. The understanding of people involved in nursing education, from coping strategies of nursing students with clinical stress, is highly important for any kind of planning in this field Objective: To explore the coping strategies of Iranian nursing students with stress in a clinical setting. Methods: This qualitative content analysis study was carried out with twenty nursing students who were selected using purposive sampling at the Razi nursing and midwifery school in Kerman, in Iran during a ten-month period in 2016. Data were collected using semi-structured face to face interviews, and analyzed through Graneheim and Lundman's qualitative content analysis method. Results: "Seeking well-being" as the main theme and three categories of "Active confrontation with stress", "mastering the mind and body" and "avoidance" were obtained from data analysis. Conclusion: The exploration of nursing students' experiences of coping with clinical stressors, increases students' awareness of their coping strategy. The academic authorities in recognizing the coping strategies of students with stress in clinical setting, can provide necessary training on effective coping strategies for students.
