Artistic Research in the Present Tense (original) (raw)
2015
Abstract
Artistic research has a long tradition that dates back, under different forms and with different associations, to what is known as the modern art movement. The connivance between research and output is the result of an aesthetic approach which is specific to the creative arts. A sense of quality is fundamental to all artists. Arts studies are not built up from disciplinary knowledge: young creative artists learn through their own systems of perception, and they encounter knowledge not by assimilation but through contemporary questioning of that knowledge. Artistic research builds up by bringing tension into the present. Art schools have developed specific forms of research and now offer training through research as well as a higher education diploma in artistic research.
