In Mumbai where the people don't have proper space to live, there is hardly any space to plant trees. The solution is in utilizing campus for this purpose. Various campuses in Mumbai consist of large acres of land which need to be utilized technically. Our report deals with the implementation of such energy efficient techniques by the means of such large campuses. In this paper, power consumption statistics of IIT Bombay are discussed. Also various energy efficient techniques such as introduction of bicycle system, concept of car pooling, piezoelectric plates on the college gates, use of canteen soap water for flushing in toilets, use of internet facility over the paper (journals, files), use of hamsters wheel as an amusement are described. The most technical way involved is the use of DATA LOGGERS for creating awareness among the students and staff as this awareness matters a lot.

International Journal of Innovative Knowledge Concepts Environmental Consciousness of Higher Education Institutions in India to Build Sustainable Green Campuses

The Higher Education Institutions in India is highly motivated towards environmental issues as the youths pursuing the higher education need lot of responsibility to create environmental awareness to safeguard the environment. Due to over population, modern lifestyles and industrialization, the humans are highly ignorance in taking self responsibility to protect our mother nature. Lot of issues on environmental damages proliferating day by day and there is a dire need for addressing and creating mass environmental awareness and promoting green campuses in Higher Education Institutions. The excess use of resources, consumption of energies and damages to the biodiversity are the key issues needing immediate attention. The Universities and Colleges in India can collectively promote environmental awareness to the masses by taking stride themselves in making many developmental plans and activities for environmentally sound practices as model for others. The students need to be trained to proactively involve and participate towards sustainable future by turning eco friendly activities at institutions and also creating mass awareness among public through several measures. The paper focuses on the need of environmentally safe practices and environmental consciousness of HEIs in India to safeguard our natural resources and also building green friendly campuses.

Green Initiatives for Sustainable Universities: Case Study of JUET, Guna

American Society of Civil Engineers, India Section, 2014

The increasing number of technical institutes and universities in the country have an important role in development of a sustainable society. A sustainable campus integrates the technical knowledge of all specializations to develop policies that reduce the impact on the environment, by providing awareness to the students about existing environmental concerns and encourages research for sustainable utilization of the resources in the campus. The study area discussed in this paper is Jaypee University of Engineering & Technology (JUET), existing on Agra-Mumbai national highway, Guna district, M.P, in an area of 125 acres, housing more than 2000 students inside the campus. The present work comprises the study of existing polices in the university related to land use pattern, construction, water management, energy efficiency and waste management; for estimating the sustainable options to reduce environmental foot print. The study has identified three areas which can effectively contribute to environmental sustainability i.e. utilization of renewable resources, effective rainwater harvesting and recycling of the solid waste generated in the campus. The results suggested that study area has good potential for rainwater harvesting, harnessing the solar energy and production of bio gas from kitchen waste generated in the campus.

Sustainable Campus Project

International Journal of Technology and Human Interaction, 2000

The reality of global warming, climate change and energy shortages has put all circles to the task of actively promoting education in energy conservation and carbon reduction. From 2004, the Ministry of Education has been promoting the Sustainable Campus Project, partially subsidizing hundreds of schools to implement hardware improvements and carry out related environmental education. This study explores whether the teachers and administrators of these schools are aware of Sustainable Campus Project facilities in their schools, whether they used the items, and whether they understand how these facilities work to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions. The authors’ study concludes with suggestions on how to use existing Sustainable Campus Project facilities to carry out energy conservation and carbon reduction education effectively.

Sustainable Solutions: Implementing a World Green Campus Model

PT. Literasi Nusantara Abadi Grup, 2024

The book Sustainable Solutions: Implementing a World Green Campus Model provides a comprehensive guide for educational institutions aiming to create a sustainable, environmentally friendly campus. Drawing from the principles of Balinese culture, particularly the concept of Tri Hita Karana, the book emphasizes the importance of harmony between humans, nature, and spirituality in building a Green Campus. It offers practical strategies and actionable steps for integrating sustainable practices into campus operations, from energy efficiency and waste management to green infrastructure and community engagement. Through an in-depth case study of Universitas Udayana's success in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking, the book illustrates how cultural values can be seamlessly integrated with modern sustainability initiatives. The authors highlight the benefits of this holistic approach, including reducing environmental impact, enhancing student and faculty well-being, and fostering a culture of sustainability that extends beyond the campus. By examining the successes and challenges faced by Universitas Udayana, the book provides valuable insights for other institutions aiming to achieve similar results. The book also outlines the importance of continuous improvement, monitoring progress through key performance indicators, and engaging all stakeholders—from students to local communities—in the journey towards sustainability. By offering a model based on sustainable Balinese culture, this book serves as a blueprint for universities worldwide seeking to implement effective and culturally relevant Green Campus initiatives. Ultimately, it aims to inspire educational institutions to lead in global sustainability efforts, ensuring a greener, more resilient future for generations to come.

Eco Green Campus: Challenges and Opportunities. The Study Case of Polytechnic Institute of Beja

E3S Web of Conferences

Higher Education Institutions have an important role in the promotion of sustainability. The sustainability has been seen not only as a component of education, research and innovation, but also as a social learning process within and beyond academia. The adherence of the four schools that belongs to IPBeja, to the Eco-Schools Program allows the environmental analysis of each. The present work intends to contribute to the creation of the Eco Green Campus in to Polytechnic Institute of Beja (IPBeja). Environmental audits were carried out on the four Schools and in the IPBeja common services facilities. The results shows that it is necessary to implement some measures in order to IPBeja become an Eco Green Campus, involving all academic community: improvement of resource management; reduction of waste and effluent production; waste recovery; reduction of water and energy consumption; use of renewable energy; promotion of sustainable mobility and adoption of sustainable public procureme...
