this information, please add more information about the kinds of services already available to people with schizophrenia and their family members in Iran. You might also want to incorporate the Iranian focus more explicitly into the specific aims listed at the end of the introduction. Response: The necessary information was added to the "background" section and highlighted. 2. Please add more information about the intervention, how it was developed, and how it compares to other family-oriented interventions in the literature such as family psychoeduction or NAMI's Family-to-Family. Please also be clear about whether just the family members or the family members AND their associated patients participated in the experimental intervention. A subsection in the Methods just about the intervention might help with this. Response: We developed our intervention based on the families' needs and the existing literature in this regard. Also, the caregivers participated in the interventions while the patients in both groups received antipsychotic drug treatment. The necessary information was added to the methods section.

Effect of a psycho-educational intervention for family members on caregiver burdens and psychiatric symptoms in patients with schizophrenia in Shiraz, Iran

BMC Psychiatry, 2012

Background: This study explored the effectiveness of family psycho-education in reducing patients' symptoms and on family caregiver burden. Methods: Seventy Iranian outpatients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia disorder and their caregivers were randomly allocated to the experimental (n = 35) or control groups (n = 35). Patients in the experimental group received antipsychotic drug treatment and a psycho-educational program was arranged for their caregivers. The psycho-educational program consisted of ten 90-min sessions held during five weeks (two session in each week). Each caregiver attended 10 sessions (in five weeks) At baseline, immediately after intervention, and one month later. Validated tools were used to assess patients' clinical status and caregiver burden. Results: Compared with the control group, the case group showed significantly reduced symptom severity and caregiver burden both immediately after intervention and one month later. Conclusions: These results suggest that even need based short-term psycho-educational intervention for family members of Iranian patients with schizophrenic disorder may improve the outcomes of patients and their families.

A randomized controlled trial of a mutual support group for family caregivers of patients with schizophrenia

International journal of nursing studies, 2004

This randomized controlled trial examined the effectiveness of a 12-session mutual support group conducted over 3-months for Chinese family caregivers of a relative with schizophrenia compared with routine family support services in Hong Kong. Forty-eight family caregivers from two psychiatric outpatient clinics were allocated randomly to an experimental (mutual support and usual outpatient care) group (n = 24) or a control (usual outpatient care only) group (n = 24). Data were collected prior to, 1 week and 3 months after the intervention. Families allocated to the mutual support group experienced decreased levels of family burden and increased family functioning and these changes were significantly greater than those of the controls at both post-intervention time points. The experimental group also showed a significant decrease in the duration of patient re-hospitalization (the total number of days of psychiatric hospitalization) at 3 months compared with the control group. Effect of Psycho-Educational Program for Caregivers of Patients with Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia does not cause disturbances for the patients only but also their caregivers. Caring for a family member with schizophrenia is challenging for caregivers because it is extremely stressful burden. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of psycho-educational program for families' caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. Design: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized in this study. Subjects: A convenient sample of families' caregivers of schizophrenic patients (60) (All caregivers are available) Setting: Data were collected from the psychiatric outpatient clinic department at Demera psychiatric hospital. Data collection tools: Five tools were used for data collection Tool 1: Bio-demographic data sheet, which included (a) Demographic data related to caregiver, (b) Demographic data of patient, (c) Clinical data related to the patient, Tool 2: Assess caregivers' knowledge, Tool 3: Assess caregivers' practice, Tool 4: Caregiver burden scale and Tool 5: Caregiver Satisfaction Scale. Results: more than one quarter of caregivers had good knowledge level about all aspects of schizophrenia disease pre-educational program compared to the most of them post & follow-up program, more than half of them had poor practice level pre-educational program compared to the minority of them post-educational program and There was positive moderate association between caregivers' knowledge and their practice post psycho-educational program. Also, there were negative moderate association between caregivers' knowledge and their practice with their burden distress practice post psycho-educational program. Conclusion: The psycho-educational program has a successful effect in changing knowledge, practice and declining the burden of family caregivers for patients with schizophrenia. Recommendation: Facilitating access to psycho-educational programs in psychiatric hospitals and outpatient clinics and to integrate this intervention into the regular treatment plans for patients with schizophrenia.

The effects of group psychoeducational programme on family burden in caregivers of Iranian patients with schizophrenia

Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, 2013

Family members often play a vital role as caregivers in the lives of individuals with schizophrenia. Results of the studies showed that family invironment is the most important determinint of patients outcomes like as quality of life, relapse, adherence. This study aimed to determine the effect of group psychoeducational programme on attitude towards mental illness in families of patients with schizophrenia. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 74 families who have schizophrenic patients hospitalized in psychiatric wards during sampling were selected by convenience sampling method. Then the sample was randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The families of experimental group received 8 continuous 90-minute 3 times a week psychoeducational sessions. Family attitude towards mental illness was measured using the questionnaire of Opinion about Mental Illnesses (OMI) before and after intervention. Data analysis was conducted using  2 test, independent t-test, and paired t-test on SPSS software version 13. Results: The results showed that majority of the families had negative attitude towards mental illness (88.90%). In addition, the results showed that there was significant difference between different dimensions of attitude towards mental illness before and after psychoeducation in the experimental group. The mean score of families' post-test in the experimental group increased compared to control group 108.86 (14.9), vs. 88.86 (7.5). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that psychoeducation improves family attitude towards mental illness. Training methods like group psych education for the families of mental patients can be effective on their attitudes towards mental illness.

Effect of Family Psycho education on Burden of Disease & Coping Strategies among Caregivers of Patients with Schizophrenia

2016

Family Care and Schizophrenia: The Effects of a Supportive Educational Program on Relatives' Personal and Social Adjustment

Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, 1987

In the aftermath of deinstitutionalisation and the move to community management of schizophrenia, relatives play an increasing role in the management of the illness. Families often complain of being misinformed and ill equipped to aid in the treatment. A supportive/ educational intervention for relatives is described and evaluated. Seven parents with a schizophrenic offspring participated in a descriptive pilot study employing a pre-post-treatment design. To test the hypotheses that treatment would impact on participants' distress, burden, family conflict, isolation and knowledge of schizophrenia, before and after measures were taken on self-report indices utilising these features. Generalisation effects on family coping were assessed via tri-weekly telephone interviews for the duration of the study. The intervention included information and sharing sessions. There was a substantial reduction in distress symptoms, anxiety, depression, burden and the amount of family conflict; there was an increase in the duration of home visits, out of home excursions and knowledge of schizophrenia. Most of the subjects' needs were met by the intervention. These gains were achieved with a high level of consumer acceptance. It was concluded that this kind of education has an important role in psychosocial intervention with relatives of the mentally ill.
