Performance indicators based on collaboration benefits

The identification and characterization of collaboration benefits is an important element for the wide adoption of the collaborative networks paradigm. This paper introduces an approach for the analysis of benefits in collaborative processes for networks of enterprises. The potential application of some indicators derived from this analysis is also discussed in the VO breeding environment context.

Collaborative networks are an increasing trend in highly competitive globalised economies, where collaboration is essential to succeed. Some specific challenges in collaborative networks, either for a Virtual Breeding Environment (VBE) or a Virtual Organisation (VO), are in first instance, to support the VBE members' integration process to the source network in order to establish: cooperation agreements, common operation principles, common interoperable infrastructures, common ontologies, and mutual trust towards guaranteeing that potential VO partners within the VBE are ready in advance to participate in dynamic coalitions and collaborative endeavours. In a second instance, VO partners' selection process faces the challenge of matching a particular collaboration opportunity with specific competency requirements available in a set of potential VO partners. This paper presents a readiness for collaboration assessment and enhancing approach aiming at identifying critical evaluation elements referred as readiness for collaboration assessments in order to determine if a potential VBE member has the needed elements to collaborate and participate in a collaborative network such as a VBE or a VO. In case that it lacks from these elements, the approach will provide enhancing mechanisms to improve its readiness level for collaboration towards increasing both its chances and preparedness towards collaboration in potential VOs.
Organizational Sustainability and Value Creation in Collaborative Networks

Collaborative Networks are becoming ever more important as a lunchpad for the achievement of competitive advantages and for the creation of socio-economic benefits. According to the relational view theory, joint efforts can indeed generate relational rents. However, task coordination is not a sufficient means for value creation. Indeed, Collaborative Networks have to create a link between several aspects, such as trust, culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing, managerial processes, incentive systems, ethical code and so on in order to create cooperation and, thus, value. Aim of this work is to analyze how these aspects affect each other and how they affect value creation within collaborative networks. In order to do so, we develop a model, based on UML and e3value, in which the main factors impacting on value creation and value exchanges within CNOs are represented. After the description of the model, we analyze a case study of a CNO.
Readiness for Collaboration Assessment Approach in Collaborative Networked Organisations
Collaboration is essential to develop successful Collaborative Networked Organizations (CNOs). In order to know if an organization is ready and has the needed characteristics for collaborate and participate in a CNO, either a Virtual Breeding Environment (VBE) or a Virtual Organization (VO), a set of specific elements should be evaluated. These evaluation elements are referred as Readiness for Collaboration Assessments and are the main topic of this paper. Main elements that should be considered in these assessments, especially for an organization that wants to become a VBE member are presented as a first approach that can be implemented in different Virtual Breeding Environments.
Creating and managing value in collaborative networks

This is a theoretical paper that examines the interplay between individual and collective capabilities and competencies and value transactions in collaborative environments. The theory behind value creation is examined and two types of value are identified, internal value (Shareholder value) and external value (Value proposition). The literature on collaborative enterprises/network is also examined with particular emphasis on supply chains, extended/virtual enterprises and clusters as representatives of different forms and maturities of collaboration. The interplay of value transactions and competencies and capabilities are examined and discussed in detail. Finally, a model is presented which consists of value transactions and a table which compares the characteristics of different types of collaborative enterprises/networks. It is proposed that this model presents a platform for further research to develop an in-depth understanding into how value may be created and managed in collaborative enterprises/networks.

This study aims at identifying and analyzing the features of collaboration in a networked business through a qualitative case study. The starting point of the paper is the alleged need of companies to find suitable means to capture and combine the efforts of internal and external actors and ways to form such networks which will support the growth and profitability of the business. The theoretical background of this study is based on the organizational research on networks and value co-production which suggests that collaboration not only enables the organising and utilising of competences, but also provides one aspect in understanding how mutual activities are managed in organizations.

Collaborative networks are believed to bring benefits to its participants once they share risks, knowledge and profits. However, in order to obtain successful outcomes, a network must be properly designed and managed, which comprises controlling network performance. Thus, this paper puts forward a series of measurement themes and performance metrics to measure collaboration among manufacturing organisations in a network characterised by subcontracts. So as to achieve this objective, literature on collaborative networked organisations (CNOs) and performance metrics for collaboration is reviewed. Afterwards, a field study is carried out in a Brazilian network of firms that produce capital goods. A description is given on how this network is formed, managed and how its elements relate with each other. Then, a set of performance measures is suggested for each measurement theme. Finally, considerations are made on the research findings and limitations.

Collaborative networks: Value creation in a knowledge society

Collaborative networks show a high potential as drivers of value creation. The materialization of this potential however requires further progress in understanding these organizational forms and the underlying principles of this new paradigm. As a contribution in this direction, the notion of collaboration among organizations is clarified, a taxonomy of collaborative networks is proposed, and the basic elements of value creation are discussed, in the context of a holistic approach to collaborative networks.
