Subjective Wellbeing and Happiness Inside a City Region

2012

Empirical happiness study has become an acknowledged part of welfare studies but its connections to geographical analysis are rare. This study is trying to contribute to this void by embedding empirical happiness study into analysis operating within a certain city region. Aim of the study was to acquire knowledge about personal values and preconditions happiness is based on. Furthermore, moving into certain community and the desired characteristics of a neighbourhood contributing happiness, were defined to represent these values as well Instrumentalization of the concepts “happiness” and “subjective wellbeing” was constructed as a synthesis composing from Erik Allardts "loving", "having" and "being", Ed Dieners subjective wellbeing SWB and Aristotelian virtue of ethics. These components were transformed into an internet based questionnaire which was delivered to the residents of the neighbourhoods to be studied. As a research framework for comparative c...

A Conceptual Paper on the Theory of Happiness in Neighbourhood

Asian Journal of Behavioural Studies, 2018

In this paper, we impart on the notion of happiness and indicate the many beliefs and perspectives of happiness. The theory and concept of happiness are variously defined and interpreted by separate groups. It relates greatly to human’s emotions thus influential in affecting the people’s well-being. Most scholars often felt that happiness relates to wealth and health. Inevitably, the sentiment of happiness can be inspired by the surrounding environment and neighbourhood, facilities, family relationship, community and friends, and so forth. For this reason, it is important to uncover the perennial question of what constitute happiness within an urban neighbourhood. Keywords: Happiness;happiness theory;urban neighbourhood;neighbourhood componenteISSN 2398-4295 © 2018. To answer the question, from the inductive method, a bibliographic search will be made of the concept of urban happiness and of the most relevant health, education and governance indicators proposed since 1979 by the different countries and research centers. Similarly, a contemporary count of the countries with the best indicators of urban happiness and their reasons will be made. Geography of well-being: Czech experience

Geografický časopis - Geographical Journal

The geography of well-being is based on the knowledge that this concept has a spatial dimension and on the knowledge that well-being is not interchangeable with quality of life or happiness. Creating a well-being epistemology is challenging not only because of the prevailing terminological chaos but also for cultural and linguistic reasons. The aim of the paper is to outline the epistemology of well-being from a geographical point of view and its application at the level of Czech districts. The epistemology of the geography of well-being is based on the knowledge that it consists of subjective spatially differentiated satisfaction with life. This distinguishes it from the geography of quality of life, which is actually the geography of the quality of the place, formed by a set of objective indicators of amenities and other variables that form the quality of the place. We surveyed well-being and its drivers on a scale of 0-10 with face-to-face method and via social networks. In the final part of the paper, implications are derived.

Community Well-Being or Quality of Place? A Few Notes and Their Application in Czech Republic

Community Quality-of-Life and Well-Being

Community well-being is an umbrella term for different ways of describing community development. The combination of words community and well-being is a result of the application of the psychological term well-being to territorial planning, or generally, to a geographical context. This paper includes an analysis of the concept of well-being in its original psychological context, and an assessment of the suitability of its application in the form of community well-being. Quality of life, in our understanding, is based on the examination of a good life. In psychology and other sciences oriented towards the subjective dimension of quality of life, the attention is focused on 'how' a person lives his/her life; on the other hand, in geography and other sciences oriented towards the objective dimension of quality of life, the attention is focused on 'where' a person lives his/her life, i.e. the 'place'. The key element of the geography of quality of life is the phenomenon of a 'good place' as a place, where a good life is lived. The described approach provides a framework for the analysis of different-size groups of municipalities and small towns, using self-reported evaluations of the quality of life of their inhabitants.
