On the Pitfalls of Total Quality Management: A literature evaluation from the managerial perspective

As a management philosophy and a set of guiding principles Total Quality Management (TQM) aims an effective use of whole resources of an organization and contributes an organization to achieve its objectives. Since the philosophy of TQM was developed, TQM has been attracting the attention of academics and managers. Though there is a large number of literatures about success stories and benefits TQM, many TQM implementation programs fail because of various reasons. Because implementation of TQM is not without difficulties and there is no easy way to be successful. The main objective of the article is to present pitfalls of implementation of TQM based on reviewing the literature. It is asserted that obstacles to a successful implementation of TQM are managerial, not individual. The article may be useful for managers and practitioners to avoid pitfalls of implementing TQM.

Purpose -According to the literature, quality management consists of a set of components: critical factors, tools, techniques and practices. The purpose of this paper is: to identify the components of total quality management (TQM), in order to make them known to managers and thus facilitate successful quality management implementation, and to show the situation of 106 ISO 9000 certified firms concerning these components. Design/methodology/approach -In order to achieve this objective, a literature review and a survey based on 106 ISO 9000 certified firms in Spain were developed. Findings -The results reflect that certified firms must develop their people orientation 1and use techniques and tools to a higher extent in order to progress towards total quality. Originality/value -The value of the paper is point out which TQM components are important to successfully implement TQM and identify the situation of these components in ISO 9000 certified firms in a particular area.

The past decade has seen many firms focusing on Total Quality Management (TQM) as a means of improving profits, market share and competitiveness. Although TQM is a proven approach for success in manufacturing, services and the public sector, several organizations failed in their campaigns because of many reasons like lack of top management commitment, ignoring customers etc. This paper presents a study on certain specific factors that impact the success of the TQM implementation purely based on the secondary research. The research points out that, though most organizations start TQM efforts for their success, they are frequently exposed to the factors which may cause their TQM efforts to delay or even fail. TQM is a sure bet to reverse poor performance, but when it did not yield the expected results, it was deemed a failure. The review has been done to identify the common problems that lead to the failure of TQM implementation in the organization and has pointed out the critical success factors of TQM. Nevertheless, the overall results of this research imply that the understanding of the elements that cause failure to the TQM implementation can provide needed help for companies involved in long-term continuous improvement efforts. If the advanced TQM approach is properly followed, it will help the companies to achieve organizational excellence.

This study came to examine the impact of Total Quality management (TQM) as instrument in achieving on the organisational performance. QUALITY MANAGEMENT AND PERFORMANCE: A REVIEW I J ARM
In present scenario of globalization and economic slowdown, survival of organizations has become a challenging task for the management. Customers expect high product quality along with low cost, timely deliver and best service. In such a situation, total quality management in the organization is very relevant. This paper has tried to explore different issues affecting implementation of TQM, effect of TQM on performance and circumstances under which TQM fails. One hundred twenty research papers, mainly from referred international journals are reviewed to identify thrust areas of research. On the basis of review, gaps are identified and research agenda is proposed. This paper has identified certain gaps from literature on issues related with TQM such as development of framework for evaluating effectiveness of TQM, prioritization of critical success factors, comparative study of TQM and effect of TQM on performance of organizations from supply chain perspective etc on which further study can be conducted.

In this study, there will be a testing of the strength of the relationship between TQM practice and the performance of the organisation and with the use of covariates, the size of the company, the type of industry and the ISO 9000 certification status. There will be an analysis of a very large and random sample of 150 manufacturing companies in Saudi Arabia was chosen for the study. The main finding that is made here that TQM tends to have mixed results when it is covaried for company size and the type of industry involved. It was found that the relationship that exists between TQM and organisational performance is not very much affected when it is covaried for ISO 9000 certification status.
