Contextualized activities to promote cultural awareness: under the umbrella of CLIL and PBL in English as a foreign language (original) (raw)

2019

Abstract

Today language educators are called to adopt new approaches to mediate language practices not only to respond to students` needs and preferences but to respond to present and future society demands. New adaptations in the classroom would lead students to better opportunities for language acquisition and the development of other skills needed to interrelate in modern constant changing contexts. Along with the ability to speak and understand other languages, teachers should encourage learners to develop cultural awareness through the study of their own culture in order to understand, respect and value other life perspectives. Content and language integrated (CLIL) and Project-based learning (PBL) are described as significant approaches in the language classroom that offer students meaningful learning. Language educators should consider the use of contextualized language tasks to enhance cultural awareness, linguistic competence, and a significant proactive learning process. This paper...
