Dynamic Capabilities for the Development of Innovation Capability

The present article aims at analyzing the dynamic capabilities’ contributions for the development of innovation capability in a chemical sector company. The company headquarters are located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with branches in other states in Brazil, Latin America and China. More specifically, it concerns the company’s innovation strategies and practices related to sensing, seizing and reconfiguration capabilities and their micro-foundations, as presented by Teece (2007). This research is classified as a descriptive and qualitative case study. Data were collected through 10 semi-structured interviews and analyzed through the qualitative content analysis. The main results show that the dynamic capabilities help to develop innovation capability. This research checked that the approach on dynamic capabilities is of fundamental importance for the development of innovation capability by reinforcing it as an organizational strategy.

While most researchers interested in the concept of dynamic capabilities focus their attention on analyzing how companies transform their resources to compete in their environment, the process of developing dynamic capabilities is treated as a marginal issue. Although the literature suggests various approaches to developing dynamic capabilities, they are formulated in general terms, and doubts can be raised about the links between actions. There is also a lack of empirical research indicating the links between activities in the process of developing dynamic capabilities and their influence on the effectiveness of an organization. A Systematic Review of Empirical Researches on Dynamic Capabilities

In today’s dynamic and highly competitive context, organizations should be “active actors” and capable to adapt to environmental changes. Sensing and seizing opportunities as well as taking initiatives to avoid potential threats is imperative. The dynamic capabilities view (DCV) focuses on the capacity to survive in dynamic environments by creating new resources and by renewing or changing the resource base. Despite the increasing relevance of the concept of dynamic capabilities on strategic management research field, there are few reliable empirical studies on dynamic capabilities as the existing empirical studies are too abstract and limited to case studies. For this reason, this research aims to identify the existing measure instruments for dynamic capabilities in order to understand the tendencies of quantitative studies on dynamic capabilities as well as to evaluate the reliability and validity of these scales. To accomplish this objective, I conducted a systematic review of literature on dynamic capabilities. Main findings indicate that quantitative researches on dynamic capabilities have focused on the relationship between dynamic capabilities, innovation, organization performance, knowledge management and absorptive capacity. Findings also show that efforts to measure dynamic capabilities quantitatively are recent and lack reliable methodology.
Dynamic capabilities: A review and research agenda

The notion of dynamic capabilities complements the premise of the resource-based view of the firm, and has injected new vigour into empirical research in the last decade. Nonetheless, several issues surrounding its conceptualization remain ambivalent. In light of empirical advancement, this paper aims to clarify the concept of dynamic capabilities, and then identify three component factors which reflect the common features of dynamic capabilities across firms and which may be adopted and further developed into a measurement construct in future research. Further, a research model is developed encompassing antecedents and consequences of dynamic capabilities in an integrated framework. Suggestions for future research and managerial implications are also discussed.
Dynamic Capabilities: A Measurement Proposal and its Relationship with Performance

Despite the relevance and growth of research into Dynamic Capabilities, certain gaps and criticisms remain. These issues are primarily related to the measurements of Dynanic Capabilities and its impacts on performance. There is a lack of empirical research that is attempting to investigate the existence, development, and orchestration of Dynamic Capabilities to support superior performance. This paper proposes and validates a scale for the measurement of Dynamic Capabilities based on Teece's conceptual dimensions (sense, seizing and reconfiguring) through a survey presented in a highly dynamic industry and market, and by investigating the impact on performance. The results, besides validating the scale, showed Teece´s three conceptual dimensions exhibited different behavior in relation to each dimension of performance. Sense and Reconfiguration demonstrated a negative relationship with organizational performance while Seize is positively associated with performance. This may help explain some of the fuzzy results of previous studies that used proxies to measure Dynamic Capabilities.
Identifying and assessing the scales of dynamic capabilities: a systematic literature review

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the existing measure instruments for dynamic capabilities (DCs) in order to understand the tendencies of quantitative studies on DCs as well as to evaluate the reliability and validity of these scales. Design/methodology/approach – To accomplish this objective, the authors conducted a systematic review of literature on DCs. Findings – Main findings indicate that quantitative research works on DCs have focused on the relationship between DCs, innovation, organization performance, knowledge management and absorptive capacity. Findings also show that efforts to measure DCs quantitatively are recent and lack reliable methodology. Research limitations/implications – One limitation of this research is that the authors conducted the systematic review on two databases. However, the authors conducted the research on the two most used databases in management research. Practical implications – Findings show that academicians have plenty of room to work on quantitative research works on DCs as well as to develop robust scales to measure this construct in diverse business sectors. Originality/value – This paper is the first to analyze the existing scales that measure DCs.
Innovation and Dynamic Capabilities of the Firm: Defining an Assessment Model

Innovation and dynamic capabilities have gained considerable attention in both academia and practice. While one of the oldest inquiries in economic and strategy literature involves understanding the features that drive business success and a firm's perpetuity, the literature still lacks a comprehensive model of innovation and dynamic capabilities. This study presents a model that assesses firms' innovation and dynamic capabilities perspectives based on four essential capabilities: development, operations, management, and transaction capabilities. Data from a survey of 1,107 Brazilian manufacturing firms were used for empirical testing and discussion of the dynamic capabilities framework. Regression and factor analyses validated the model; we discuss the results, contrasting with the dynamic capabilities' framework. Understanding Dynamic Capabilities from Its Antecedents, Processes and Outcomes

The theory of Dynamic Capabilities has been one of the references in the search for understanding of the competitive advantage of organizations. However, even with the development of studies on this topic, it is not clear how the Dynamic Capabilities develop and operate within organizations. Thus, this study aims to understand the dynamics capabilities from its antecedents, processes and outcomes. Through a literature review, it was possible to identify external and internal antecedents that make Dynamics Capabilities emerge in organizations, such as environmental dynamism and corporate entrepreneurship. In when it comes to process, it was identified that the Dynamic Capabilities are formed by a set of processes that have effect on resources and organizational capabilities. Thus, the development of resources and capabilities is the outcome of Dynamic Capabilities. Finally, unlike other studies, this work considers the DCs not as a specific capacity, but as a set of processes that enable the organization to deal with changes in the competitive environment.
In a turbulent environment in order to sustain competitive performance, electrical and electronics products require new manufacturing processes which involved with the development and introduction of new process technologies. Three main elements of firm's capabilities are (1) Adaptive capabilities (2) Absorptive capabilities and Innovative capabilities. There are many empirical and conceptual studies of these capabilities are available, no studies have combined them as component factors of dynamic capabilities. Therefore, to address the theoretical gaps on the construct of dynamic capabilities, we observed that firm's combinative dynamic capabilities components are absorptive capability, adaptive capability and innovative capability in the dynamic capabilities theoretical framework. In this study, we argue that these three elements are the component factors of dynamic capabilities across firms and industries. A theoretical model of combinative dynamic capability building via a review of preliminary empirical evidence in support of the argument made. Finally, implications of the combinative dynamic capabilities are discussed and an agenda for future research efforts is advanced.
