Proceeding

My aim in writing this paper is to describe that in this fast-changing world, media in Indonesia has undergone a rapid transformation. Digital technology continues to reshape the mass media landscape using internet technology. Internet brings a technical communication revolution, a fundamental change takes place in the structure of connections, artificial memories and the reproduction of their content. Internet technology has made communication much easier and less expensive. It has attracted many people and has penetrated into people's daily lives. The mass media also have accepted the internet. Almost all forms of traditional media (old media) in local media, such as radio, television, and newspaper have extended their work into this new field. The internet and the world wide web have both significantly influenced modern journalism. In online media allows readers to enjoy browsing their product and service of contents, such as news feed, podcasts, deskstop alert, news on mobile phones, PDA and others mobile devices. Online media offer not only text but also digital images, audio file, moving images (video), internet radio and internet tv. The interactive features of the internet seemingly imply that online media have more advantages than traditional media forms (old media). So, the internet have dramatically evolved become new media with characteristic multimedia, hypertext, interactivity, archives, and virtuality. The most important structural new media characteristic is the integration of telecommunications, data communications and mass communication in a single medium-it is the convergence. It should be pointed out that the trend toward digital is affecting the various media and brings the local media in East Java

Final Programme of Journalism Research & Education Section-IAMCR

In this conference through our many sessions, debates, round table discussions, I feel that there is urgency to move away from generic models. New approaches need to be devised, or explored within local contexts and older ones such development journalism that needs to be re-examined and given space to grow afresh. Journalism practices, education and research methodologies should be informed of the alternative options, base their foundations on local knowledge systems, needs and values. As educators and practitioners, we need to encourage young people to learn and practice journalism in such ways that borrows knowledge from their communities and benefits them directly by sharing their findings with them. Journalism research and education cannot be fully internationalized apart from the world-as-a-single-place and thus represents a key component in these social transformations, both as cause and outcome.

Journalism in the Era of New Media

Atlantis Press, 2016

The paper deals with the impact of new media (the Internet and new communication devices) on the traditional journalism. In recent years we have witnessed the “battle” between print newspapers and online newspapers published on the Internet. Although publishers and editors have discovered the potential of online newspapers (e.g. economic factors, simple and cheap distribution), in many cases they have become “siblings” of the press. However, there are still many examples suggesting that the online news sites are a standalone competitor to the press. To answer the question of what is the future of print newspapers and whether they have a future in their traditional form, it is necessary to take into account many factors. The authors work with the assumption that newspapers fight to attract the attention of their readers with both content and design. There is a continuous decline in readers’ interest in hard news as they often prefer soft news and entertainment. The arrangement of text in online editions of newspapers is different from the press since the online newspapers have a different structure specifically designed for mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets to enable quick and easy manipulation of the online content.

Kamasutra Journalism; Degradation of News Quality in Online Media in Indonesia

Online media in Indonesia is called secondary journalism as it gives priority on speed and tends to ignore other journalism principles such as accuracy and completeness. ‘Kamasutra journalism’ is another label for this platform since it provides space for discussing sexuality vulgarly, particularly during the boom of the ‘Ariel and Luna Maya2 porn video case’. This study applies the theory of determination technology (Marshall Mc Luhan; 1962) to explain how technology has influenced the newsroom. Exploration on media routines (Pamela J. Shoemaker; 1991) is done to get in-depth description of how the production of online news is occurred and how the quality of reporting is affected by the use of the internet. The results of this study indicate that internet technology has contributed to the degradation of news quality. It happens when the media industry forces the editor to defeat old platforms by maximizing internet superiority such us quickness, interactivity, etc. Key words: online media, degradation of news quality, media routines, media determination

New Media and Vernacular Press: A study on the status of the Online Vernacular Journalism in Assam

Communicator, 2021

Being the fourth pillar of democracy, the media has a very crucial role to play in the welfare of a nation, especially of a democratic nation like India. By providing the people with information about various issues related to the other three pillars- the Judiciary, the Executive and the Legislative - the media not only maintains the balance of democracy but also plays the important role of influencing the public, helping in formation of a public opinion, and thus acting as a crucial factor in changing socio-political values. The advancement in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has brought about far-reaching changes in the way the media functions these days. With an advent of the internet, the audience seeks more than just news; it also looks for other information, entertainment and infotainment. And this influence of ICT is seen to have extended to regional media outlets as well marking a great phase of transformation of regional media. In linguistically-diverse country like India, the importance of language journalism cannot be underplayed. The latest technology has enabled even the language press to publish and broadcast content on the internet. This clearly points to the fact that English is no longer the only language of the web doing away with the erstwhile limitations of language. With this newly added advantage, journalism can be turned into something more productive and reaching a wider audience. With the language barrier now out of the way, journalists can use the internet to disseminate news, information and other similar. Based on the primary and secondary data collected during the course of this research, the authors intend to study the trends in online Assamese journalism, implementation of ICT tools by journalists writing primarily in the Assamese language, their social media usage for journalistic endeavours. This paper also attempts to study the levels of awareness among the journalists about online laws, ethics governing the Indian press and at the same time will also try to understand the degree of digital literacy among the community of journalist of Assam.
