Chastity value as a risk factor for prostituted adolescents in Indonesia: a qualitative exploration
Asia Pacific Journal of Social Work and Development, 2020
Previous studies suggest that the practice of female child and adolescent prostitution can be attributed to various personal and social risk factors. However, cultural beliefs shared in specific societies may also determine prostitution involvement. We qualitatively explored the risk factors associated with prostitution in a rarely investigated Indonesian society. We interviewed eight female participants who were involved in adolescent prostitution. The findings suggest that prostitution involvement is not only attributed to the common personal and social risk factors, but also to cultural beliefs of chastity preservation. We argue that such beliefs may be rooted in gender inequality.

Systemic Practice and Action Research, 2016
This study applies critical systems thinking as a process to respond to and offer recommendations to address prostitution policy in Indonesia. The article addresses social, economic and environmental aspects of prostitution. The analysis centres on the way in which prostitution is framed by the different interest groups in Indonesia, and highlights the current crisis in policy-making praxis in Indonesia. The article develops a case for systemic policy praxis, and aims to: (1) Make a case for re-framing the issue of prostitution in the sense that it addresses the 'capabilities' prostituted women and children ought to have (see Sen in Development as freedom, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1999 and Nussbaum in Women and human development: the capabilities approach, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 2000). (2) Re-frame the policy response to prostitution to address life chances and human dignity. (3) Assert that the lack of attention to a just and fair human rights for all is due to a policy-making gap where 'systemic intervention' is required to restore human dignity.
Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Community Development (ICCD 2019), 2019
This study aims to describe the reality of community empowerment among lower class prostitutes. The background of the research is that the existence of this group needs continuous attention. More attention is needed because empowerment of vulnerable communities has a high failure rate. This study will describe the obstacles in dealing with lower class prostitution communities. This research is based on primary data (prostitutes, local government, and surrounding communities). Data were obtained through in-depth interviews. The results of the study showed that community empowerment within the lower class prostitute community had been carried out by the government by equipping the prostitutes with business skills and providing them with business capital support. However, the government's efforts did not yield positive results. Some of the contributing factors include the reproduction of prostitution, ambiguity in implementing prostitution banning policies, and ignorance of the surrounding community. Thus the recommendation of this study is "cutting the chain of prostitution community."
Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2024
Having a noble livelihood is one of the majority's wishes, but there are souls stuck in the mud and poverty. This includes paid women who are willing to take risks and face the scorn of others just to sell sexual services in exchange for money. This qualitative research gave a voice to women in the field of prostitution to reveal their perspective and psychological struggle in their occupation. The data in this research came from interviews with female sex workers from Metro Manila. The obtained information was analyzed through thematic analysis. Based on the research results, the main themes were developed and extended: poverty, clinging to the knife, life's blows, living despite the humiliation, faith, and new hope. Despite the negative connotations, it can be seen that hope has sprouted in their feelings. There is hope that, in time, they will be able to get out of their misery. Apart from this, it is also undeniable that their faith and prayer in the Above remained with them even though life with a heavy burden was associated with it.
