Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2008
An experimental investigation had been carried out for hot-machining operation of high manganese steel using a carbide cutting tool. The heating of the work-piece was carried out by burning a mixture of liquid petroleum gas and oxygen. An expression of tool life as a function of cutting speed, feed, depth of cut and temperature was developed using regression analysis. The adequacy of the model was tested. The effects of cutting conditions on tool life were also investigated.
Monitoring and neural network modeling of cutting temperature during turning hard steel
Thermal Science, 2018
In this study, cutting tools average temperature was investigated by using thermal imaging camera of FLIR E50-type. CBN inserts with zero and negative rake angles were taken as cutting tools and round bar of EN 90MnCrV8 hardened steel was used as the workpiece. Since the life of the cutting tool material strongly depends upon cutting temperature, it is important to predict heat generation in the tool with intelligent techniques. This paper proposes a method for the identification of cutting parameters using neural network. The model for determining the cutting temperature of hard steel, was trained and tested by using the experimental data. The test results showed that the proposed neural network model can be used successfully for machinability data selection. The effect on the cutting temperature of machining parameters and their interactions in machining were analyzed in detail and presented in this study.

Tool life of the cutting tools is considered as one of the factors which has effects on machining costs and the quality of machined parts. The topic of tool life prediction has been an interesting and important research topic attracting the attention of a wide number of researchers in this particular area. In terms of the suitable methods used in this research topic, it is stated that both statistical and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches can be employed to model tool life. For further justifying the capability of the ANN model in predicting tool life, the current study was based on conducting experimental work for collecting the experimental data. After carrying out the experiment, 17 data sets were collected and they were divided into two subsets; the first one for training and the second for testing. Since the data sets seemed to be lower than the number of data sets used in previous studies, we attempted to make verification of the ability of the ANN model in learning and ...

In this paper, the regression analysis (RA) and artificial neural network (ANN) are presented for the prediction of tool-chip interface temperature depends on cutting parameters in machining. The RA and ANN model for prediction tool-chip interface temperature are developed and mathematical equations derived for tool-chip interface temperature prediction are obtained. The tool-chip interface temperature results obtained from mathematical equations with RA and ANN model and the experimental results available in the literature obtained by using AISI 1117 steel work piece with embedded K type thermocouple into the uncoated cutting tool (Korkut, Boy, Karacan, & S ßeker, 2007) are compared. The coefficient of determination (R 2) both training and testing data for temperature prediction in the ANN model are determined as 0.999791289 and 0.997889303 whereas; R 2 for both training and testing data in the RA model are computed as 0.999063 and 0.999427, respectively. The correlation obtained by the training ANN model are better than the one obtained by training RA model. The training ANN model with the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm provides more accurate prediction and is quite useful in the calculation of tool-chip interface temperature when compared with the trained RA method in machining. On the other hand, prediction values obtained the testing RA model is slightly better performance than the testing ANN model. The results show that the tool-chip interface temperature equation derived from RA and ANN model can be used for prediction.
Tool wear and surface roughness prediction plays a significant role in machining industry for proper planning and control of machining parameters and optimization of cutting conditions. This paper deals with developing an artificial neural network (ANN) model as a function of cutting parameters in turning steel under minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). A feed-forward backpropagation network with twenty five hidden neurons has been selected as the optimum network. The co-efficient of determination (R2) between model predictions and experimental values are 0.9915, 0.9906, 0.9761 and 0.9627 in terms of VB, VM, VS and Ra respectively. The results imply that the model can be used easily to forecast tool wear and surface roughness in response to cutting parameters.
Development of family of artificial neural networks for the prediction of cutting tool condition
Advances in Production Engineering & Management
Recently, besides regression analysis, artificial neural networks (ANNs) are increasingly used to predict the state of tools. Nevertheless, simulations trained by cutting modes, material type and the method of sharpening twist drills (TD) and the drilling length from sharp to blunt as input parameters and axial drilling force and torque as output ANN parameters did not achieve the expected results. Therefore, in this paper a family of artificial neural networks (FANN) was developed to predict the axial force and drilling torque as a function of a number of influencing factors. The formation of the FANN took place in three phases, in each phase the neural networks formed were trained by drilling lengths until the drill bit was worn out and by a variable parameter, while the combinations of the other influencing parameters were taken as constant values. The results of the prediction obtained by applying the FANN were compared with the results obtained by regression analysis at the points of experimental results. The comparison confirmed that the FANN can be used as a very reliable method for predicting tool condition.
Modelling of tool life in end milling of Ti6Al4V alloy using artificial neural networks
Proceedings of the 11th …, 2012
Nowadays, artificial neural networks (ANN) are often applied in solving numerous problems in machining processes. A tool life prediction of coated and uncoated cutting tools proves to be significant. In this study, a feed forward back propagation neural network with a Levenberg-Marquard (L-M) training algorithm is used in modeling the tool life of a PVD insert cutting tool when end milling of Ti6Al4V under dry cutting conditions. The objective of this study is to apply ANN in the prediction of the tool life of PVD cutting tools using low experimental data sets. One hundred and ten (110) models were designed, trained and tested using Matlab neural network tool box. Good agreement was obtained between the ANN model and the experimental data.

An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed for the analysis and prediction of the relationship between cutting and process parameters during high-speed turning of nickel-based, Inconel 718, alloy. The input parameters of the ANN model are the cutting parameters: speed, feed rate, depth of cut, cutting time, and coolant pressure. The output parameters of the model are seven process parameters measured during the machining trials, namely tangential force (cutting force, F z ), axial force (feed force, F x ), spindle motor power consumption, machined surface roughness, average flank wear (VB), maximum flank wear (VB max ) and nose wear (VC). The model consists of a threelayered feedforward backpropagation neural network. The network is trained with pairs of inputs/outputs datasets generated when machining Inconel 718 alloy with triple (TiCN/Al 2 O 3 /TiN) PVD-coated carbide (K 10) inserts with ISO designation CNMG 120412. A very good performance of the neural network, in terms of agreement with experimental data, was achieved. The model can be used for the analysis and prediction of the complex relationship between cutting conditions and the process parameters in metal-cutting operations and for the optimisation of the cutting process for efficient and economic production. q

Machining of hardened steel at high cutting speeds produces high temperatures in the cutting zone, which affects the surface quality and cutting tool life. Thus, predicting the temperature in early stage becomes utmost importance. This research presents a neural network model for predicting the cutting temperature in the CNC end milling process. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was applied as an effective tool for modeling and predicting the cutting temperature. A set of sparse experimental data for finish end milling on AISI H13 at hardness of 48 HRC have been conducted to measure the cutting temperature. The artificial neural network (ANN) was applied to predict the cutting temperature. Twenty hidden layer has been used with feed forward back propagation hierarchical neural networks were designed with Matlab2009b Neural Network Toolbox. The results show a high correlation between the predicted and the observed temperature which indicates the validity of the models.
