On the spectrum of an operator associated with least-squares finite elements for linear elasticity
ArXiv, 2021
In this paper we provide some more details on the numerical analysis and we present some enlightening numerical results related to the spectrum of a finite element least-squares approximation of the linear elasticity formulation introduced recently. We show that, although the formulation is robust in the incompressible limit for the source problem, its spectrum is strongly dependent on the Lamé parameters and on the underlying mesh.

In this paper we discuss some aspects related to the practical implementation of a method that has been introduced recently for the approximation of the eigenvalues of the linear elasticity problem. The scheme, based on a least-squares finite element formulation, gives rise to a non-symmetric discrete formulation that may have complex eigenvalues. Moreover the algebraic eigenvalue problem to be solved is singular, so that the theoretical estimates about the convergence of the scheme should be carefully interpreted.

We consider a mixed finite element method based on simplicial triangulations for a three-field formulation of linear elasticity. The three-field formulation is based on three unknowns: displacement, stress and strain. In order to obtain an efficient discretization scheme, we use a pair of finite element bases forming a biorthogonal system for the strain and stress. The biorthogonality relation allows us to statically condense out the strain and stress from the saddle-point system leading to a symmetric and positive-definite system. The strain and stress can be recovered in a post-processing step simply by inverting a diagonal matrix. Moreover, we show a uniform convergence of the finite element approximation in the incompressible limit. Numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical results.
Finite element approximation of the elasticity spectral problem on curved domains
Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics, 2009
We analyze the finite element approximation of the spectral problem for the linear elasticity equation with mixed boundary conditions on a curved non-convex domain. In the framework of the abstract spectral approximation theory, we obtain optimal order error estimates for the approximation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Two kinds of problems are considered: the discrete domain does not coincide with the real one and mixed boundary conditions are imposed. Some numerical results are presented.
Finite Element Spectral Analysis for the Mixed Formulation of the Elasticity Equations
SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 2013
The aim of this paper is to analyze the linear elasticity eigenvalue problem formulated in terms of the stress tensor and the rotation. This is achieved by considering a mixed variational formulation in which the symmetry of the stress tensor is imposed weakly. We show that a discretization of the mixed eigenvalue elasticity problem with reduced symmetry based on the lowest order Arnold-Falk-Winther element provides a correct approximation of the spectrum and prove quasi-optimal error estimates. Finally, we report some numerical experiments.
The three-field formulation for elasticity problems
2004
The three-field decomposition method is particularly suited for decompositions with non matching grids. It corresponds to introduce an additional grid (usually uniform, or "easy") at the interface. The unknown is then represented independently in each subdomain and on the interface. The matching between its value in each subdomain and on the interface is provided by suitable Lagrange multipliers. Here we discuss the main features of the method for a linear three-dimensional elasticity problem, in the simplest case of two subdomains. An easy numerical test to check whether the inf-sup conditions (necessary for the stability) are satisfied is also presented.
Displacement-pseudostress formulation for the linear elasticity spectral problem: a priori analysis
2021
In this paper we analyze a mixed displacement-pseudostress formulation for the elasticity eigenvalue problem. We propose a finite element method to approximate the pseudostress tensor with Raviart-Thomas elements and the displacement with piecewise polynomials. With the aid of the classic theory for compact operators, we prove that our method is convergent and does not introduce spurious modes. Also, we obtain error estimates for the proposed method. Finally, we report some numerical tests supporting the theoretical results.

The Discrete Spectrum of the Neumann-poincare Operator in 3D Elasticity
For the Neumann-Poincare (double layer potential) operator in the three-dimensional elasticity we establish asymptotic formulas for eigenvalues converging to the points of the essential spectrum and discuss geometric and mechanical meaning of coeffcients in these formulas. In particular, we establish that for any body, there are infinitely many eigenvalues converging from above to each point of the essential spectrum. On the other hand, if there is a point where the boundary is concave (in particular, if the body contains cavities) then for each point of the essential spectrum there exists a sequence of eigenvalues converging to this point from below. The reasoning is based upon the representation of the Neumann-Poincare operator as a zero order pseudo-differential operator on the boundary and on the earlier results by the author on the eigenvalue asymptotics for polynomially compact pseudodifferential operators. 2010 Mathematics Subject Classification. 47A75 (primary), 58J50 (secon...
