This study had two purposes: to examine the expertise of doctoral students in their use of the scholarly literature and to investigate the use of citation analysis as a tool for collection development. Analysis of 1,842 coded citations gleaned from 30 education dissertations awarded in 2000 from 3 institutions in the United States revealed that journal articles, at 45%, were cited most frequently, followed by monographs (33.9%) and "other" (18.3%), with magazines and Web sites contributing less than 2% each of the total material types cited. The study examined 858 journal and magazine citations, which were found in 239 unique titles. A relatively small number of journals contained a high percentage of the references found in the dissertations analyzed. Based on a design by D. Kohl and L. Purpose – This paper aims to analyse the impact of university libraries by investigating the availability of the references of dissertations in the university's own library, special attention being given to the electronic availability of cited works. Design/methodology/approach – Citation analysis was used. Ten dissertations of economics and administration from two Finnish universities were analysed. The dissertations were completed in 2005-2006. The comparison of the availability of references in two different universities – i.e. a large, multidisciplinary university and a small, specialised university – was carried out. Findings – The availability of the references of dissertations was good in both universities. A large number of references, especially journal articles, were already available electronically. Citation Practices in Selected Science and Humanities Dissertations: Implications for Teaching

The citation feature provides justification for arguments and demonstrates the novelty of one's position in research writing. It shows how a piece of research arises out of, and is grounded in the current state of disciplinary knowledge. As such, research supervisors encourage the candidates under their guidance to make citations especially when writing literature reviews and discussion sections of their dissertations. This requirement plunges many a student in confusion on how to go about this integral undertaking without written citation norms in their disciplines. The question that emerges is: On which benchmarks should dissertation writers base their citations when writing dissertations in their disciplines? Put in other words, on which benchmarks should research supervisors base their judgement on the quality of citations in their students' dissertations? The aim of this paper therefore is to uncover citation practices in selected Humanities and Science dissertations from Kenyan public universities. The paper analyses the citation types and reporting verbs of choice employed in Humanities dissertations and compares them with those in the Science dissertations. Consequently, the paper proposes a set of citation norms that can inform the writing of the Humanities and Sciences dissertation and suggests a genre-based approach for raising students' consciousness to the citation norms during the drafting stage of their dissertations.

This study was performed to determine the use of different information sources by the doctoral students of the university. There were 6688 citations in 42 doctoral theses. The data were collected from the bibliographic section listed at the end of each thesis, which included the details of the articles referred to by the researchers for completing their thesis. The citations were collected in a catalogue card. Citation analysis was carried out to find out the answers for the objectives of the present study.
Citation Analysis of the Literature Review Sections of Dissertations at M.Phil. Level
The topic of the study conducted is Citation Analysis of Literature Review sections of dissertations at the M.Phil. level in the disciplines of literature and linguistics in English. The sample was comprised of ten theses, five each from literature and linguistics. The purpose of the study was to find out the citation pattern in the text of the LR chapter based on Swales' (1990) work on citations. A mixed method approach was adopted for this purpose, which was contained in both quantitative as well as qualitative analysis of the data. Hence, the data was analyzed, organized and tabulated, and a number of conclusions were made on the basis of the findings that were deduced. The findings suggested that the writers of the sampled theses did not follow sense as was suggested by Swales (1990) in his work. Rather, they just reproduced other people's arguments just for the sake of citations, irrespective of the logic behind various types of citations. The most preferred citation type was integral, while the most preferred reporting verbs were 'say,' 'argue,' 'discuss,' and 'explain.' It was suggested that genre genre-based or analytic-synthetic approach needs to be adopted for teaching academic writing.

In this article, we aimed to investigate the dynamics of higher education texts from 2002 to 2011 by identifying the most frequently cited references, the highest cited authors, and the correlations among the co-citations. Citation and Co-Citation analyses were used to examine 1,941 cited journal articles from 41,001 publications published in SCI and SSCI databases. We juxtaposed the status of citations between two periods of 2002-2006 and 2007-2011. Results showed research trends changed significantly. Some generative reflections, methodological limitations, future research recommendations were discussed as well. The chapter attempts to identify the information needs of educationists based on the citations in Master’s degree dissertations in Education. The source for the study is the Master’s degree dissertations submitted to the Manonmanium Sundaranar University during the period 1996 2006 from N.V.K.S.D. College of Education. The citation-based approach is followed in the study. Number of citations, cited articles, authors, frequency and percentage distributions were the tools used to analyze the data. Findings showed that journals were the most utilized reference materials in the dissertations. Indian periodicals are ranked first, followed by that from the USA. Mostly cited periodicals are published in the year 1993 with 181 citations (14.23%) and mostly-cited books were published in the year 1996 with 71 (13.95%) citations.
