Due to the complex nature of such composite structures, an understanding of the guided wave propagation mechanism in honeycomb composite panels with different frequencies inherently imposes many challenges. In this paper, a numerical simulation is first conducted to investigate the wave propagation mechanism in honeycomb sandwich structures using piezoelectric actuators/sensors. In contrast to most of the previous work, elastic wave responses based on the real geometry of the honeycomb core are obtained by using the finite element method (FEM). Based on the simulation, the global guided waves in the composite can be observed when the loading frequency is low and the leaky guided waves in the skin panel are found when the loading frequency is sufficiently high. The applicability of the homogenization technique for a celled core is discussed. The effects of cell geometry on the wave propagation are also demonstrated. Experimental testing is finally conducted to validate the results of numerical simulation and very good agreement is observed. Specifically, some guided wave propagation characteristics such as group velocity dispersion and mode tuning capabilities with the presence of a honeycomb core are discussed.

An organized numerical and experimental study is carried out in order to understand ultrasonic guided wave (GW) propagation and interaction with a high density (HD) core region in a honeycomb composite sandwich structure (HCSS). Also the location of HD core region in a HCSS using embedded piezoelectric wafer transducer (PWTs) is investigated in this study. Due to complex structural characteristics, the study of guided wave (GW) propagation in HCSS with HD-core region inherently carries many challenges. Therefore, a three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation of GW propagation in the HCSS with and without HD core region is carried out using embedded PWT network. It is observed that the presence of HD core significantly reduces the amplitude of the propagating GW modes. In order to verify the numerical results, experiments are conducted in the laboratory. A good agreement between the numerical and experimental results is observed, in all the cases studied. Finally , based on the chang...
Surface and Interface Waves in Piezoelectric Sandwich Plates
2002
The goal of the present work deals with the analysis the propagation of shear horizontal (SH) and Lamb waves in piezoelectric sandwich structures. For both kinds of wave, the exact solutions are obtained using the formulation of state vector combined with the method of surface local impedance and the technique of the global matrix. The spectra of dispersion, the asymptotic behaviours as well as the profiles across the thickness of the composite structures are numerically obtained. The surface (Bleustein-Guylaev and piezoelectric Rayleigh) and interface (Maerfeld-Tournois and piezoelectric Stoneley) waves obtained at high frequency are examined and discussed.
Guided Lamb wave based multi-level disbond detection in a honeycomb composite sandwich structure
2017
The objective of this study is to detect hidden disbonds in a honeyco mb mposite sandwich structure (HCSS) using ultrasonic guided Lamb waves and bonded piezoelectric wafer trans ducer (PWTs). To achieve this, a combined theoretical, numerical and experimental study has been carried out to understand the guided wave (GW) propagation characteristics in HCSS. A fast and efficient global matrix based two dimensional (2D) semianalytical model is used to study dispersion behaviors and transient respo ns in a healthy HCSS under PWTexcitations. Finite element (FE) based numerical simulation of GW propagation in a disbonded HCSS is then carried out in ABAQUS. Experiments are then carried out in the laboratory to validate the numerical results. A good agreement is found among the theoretical, numerical and experimental r esults. A substantial amplification in the primary anti-symmetric mode (A0) is observed due to the presence of disbond. Eventually, based on these changes in modal amplitude...
Core-Skin Disbond Detection in a Composite Sandwich Panel Using Guided Ultrasonic Waves
Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation, Diagnostics and Prognostics of Engineering Systems
Advanced composite materials are being increasingly used in state-of-the-art aircraft and aerospace structures due to their many desirable properties. However, such composite materials are highly susceptible to developing internal damage. Thus, safe operation of such structures requires a comprehensive program of effective nondestructive inspection and maintenance of their critical load bearing components before the defects grow and become unstable, resulting in failure of the entire structure. Ultrasonic guided wave-based methods have the potential to significantly improve current inspection techniques for large plate-like structural components due to the waves' large propagation range and sensitivity to defects in their propagation path. The application of guided waves for nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of real structures, however, requires a thorough understanding of the characteristics of guided waves in composite structures in the presence and absence of any defects. In th...
Guided Wave Energy Transfer in Composite Sandwich Structures and Application to Defect Detection
Shock and Vibration, 2018
In this study, energy transmission of the guided waves propagating in composite sandwich structures is investigated in a wide range of frequencies using numerical simulations. e effects of different potential defects on the guided wave energy transmission are explored in such structures. Furthermore, the accuracy of homogenization methods for finite element modelling of guided wave propagation in sandwich structures is studied with the aim of reducing the computational burden of the simulations in the low range of frequencies. A 2D finite element model is developed and verified by comparing the results with the dispersion curves. In order to examine homogenization methods, the homogenized stiffness matrices of the sandwich material and the laminate skin are calculated using classical laminate theory. Results show that core-skin debonding causes absence of wave energy leakage from the skin to the core material in that region in a specific range of frequencies. e results are also obtained for the delamination within the skin and compared with the healthy material. Finally, for the guided waves in the low range of frequencies, it is possible to use the homogenization methods to create the finite element models and reduce the solution time.
A new time domain spectral finite element is developed for improving the efficiency of numerical simulations of guided waves in laminated composite strips. The finite element relies on a new generalized laminate mechanics model formulated to represent symmetric and anti-symmetric Lamb waves. The laminate mechanics incorporate thirdorder polynomial terms for the approximation of axial and transverse displacement fields through the thickness, and consider the displacements of the upper and lower surfaces as degrees of freedom. Based on the resultant governing equations of the laminate section, a new finite element with 8 nodal degrees of freedom is formulated, with its nodes collocated with Gauss-Lobatto-Legendre integration points. Stiffness and mass matrices are assembled and the transient response is predicted with explicit central differences time integration. The transient response of an orthotropic composite strip exited by a 5-count Gaussian pulse is investigated. Results are validated against a semianalytical solution Numerical results exhibit substantial improvement in the convergence and accuracy of the introduced element regarding the prediction of symmetric and anti-symmetric wave propagation.
Linear and non-linear analysis of composite plates using guided acoustic waves
2019
Guided acoustic wave techniques have been found to be very effective for damage detection. In this investigation Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) transducers are used to generate guided acoustic waves for structural health monitoring of a variety of composite specimens. Multiple sets of composite plate specimens are inspected for impact induced damage detection using PZT transducers. Composite samples are divided into two groups for comparative studies i.e. glass fiber composites and basalt fiber composites. They are damaged by impactors having different levels of impact energy. A chirp signal is excited and propagated through the specimens in a single sided excitation/detection setup to investigate the damages induced by impacts of varying intensity. Signal processing of the recorded signals for damage analysis involved both linear and nonlinear analyses. Linear ultrasonic analysis such as change in the time-of-flight of the propagating waves, Fast Fourier Transform and S-Transform of the recorded signals were tried out while the nonlinear ultrasonic analysis involved the Sideband Peak Count or the SPC technique.
Identification of material properties of sandwich structure with piezoelectric patches
2008
The work focuses on light-weight sandwich structures made of carbon-epoxy skins and foam core which have unique bending stiffness compared to conventional materials. The skins are manufactured by vacuum autoclave technology from unidirectional prepregs and the sandwich is then glued together. The resulting material properties of the structure usually differ from those provided by manufacturer or even those obtained from experimental tests on separate materials, which makes computational models unreliable. Therefore, the properties are identified using the combination of experimental analysis of the sandwich with attached piezoelectric transducer and corresponding static and modal finite element analyses. Simple mathematical optimization with repetitive finite element solution is used. The model is then verified by transient analysis when the piezoelectric patch is excited by harmonic signals covering the first two eigen-frequencies and the induced oscillations are measured by laser ...
