The Messiness of Ethics in Education

This article considers the multifaceted concept of ethics and how, despite being a familiar notion within education, it is still much contested within literature and professional practice. Drawing on postmodern, feminist and political literature, the authors explore (re)conceptualisations of ethics and ethicality in relation to ethical identity, professionalism and practice. Applying philosophical and metaphorical tools, such as the rhizome and nomad (Deleuze and Guattari, 1987), the authors suggest there is the potential to accommodate the multiple and often divergent facets of ethics, thereby engaging with different ethical possibilities. Teacher training courses have been prioritizing the cognitive domain at the expense of the affective domain with a strong ethical component characteristic of the academic routine. Ethical dilemmas faced in the teaching practice inspired us to bring an overview of aspects addressed by the literature and some codes of ethics for teachers. Adopting these codes or not is a controversial issue. This text aims to bring up this controversy as a contribution to the professionalization of educators, so that they are able to anticipate ethical dilemmas situation at school, in its complexity and contradiction, giving them a better forwarding. Thus, it is expected that future teachers will be prepared to face these situations in students, colleagues and institutions relationship. The role and importance of the problem of ethics in education

The purpose of this research; To evaluate the role and importance of the ethical problem in education through the ethical perceptions of primary school teacher candidates. The research was designed in accordance with the phenomenology pattern, one of the qualitative research designs. In this research, 40 teacher candidates studying in primary school teaching departments in various universities in Kazakhstan in the 2021-2022 academic year constitute the study group of the research. Research data were collected through a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers. As a result of the research; Primary school teacher candidates' views on ethical behaviors in the teaching profession were evaluated, and teachers ranked ethical behaviors as professional commitment, justice/equality, honesty/reliability, objectivity/impartiality, professional development, respect and professionalism. The pre-service teachers who participated in the research described discrimination, professional abuse, bribery, indiscipline and irresponsibility as unethical behaviors. In addition, the majority of teacher candidates participating in the research stated that the role of ethical behavior in the teaching profession is very effective. It is necessary to increase the courses taken by pre-service teachers during their education on professional ethics, and the course content should be developed in order to ensure their development.
A Multifocal Approach to Study Pedagogical Ethics in School Settings.

This paper advocates the argument that philosophical and empirical modes of inquiry are seldom brought together to gain a better understanding of pedagogical ethics in the natural settings of school life. Here, it is hoped that this kind of combination provides interpretative lenses for the deliberation of pedagogical practices. The paper aims to shift focus to the scene where the conditions and contingencies of pedagogical ethics may be found. This means exploring day-to-day details of pedagogical encounters to see what they might offer in putting forth an understanding of pedagogical ethics. This paper uses three interpretations from philosophy and ethics. It focuses on the perspectives of pedagogical purposes, obligations, and situations, together with their empirical interpretations of the ethic of ideals, the ethic of rights and duties, and the ethic of character and will. It shows how abstract philosophical theories can be translated into real-world ethics in education and how these reference points can help teachers in their practical ethical reflection.
The inherent ethics and integrity of education
The paper begins with some introductory remarks that explain why understanding education as a coherent human practice is necessary for a proper account of ethics in the field of education. The authors take three steps: presenting education as a practice in its own right, discussing the concept of thinking in the context of educational practice and finally revealing some practical consequences of the inherent ethics of education. The paper invites readers to further investigation rather than giving ready-at-hand answers. It challenges conventional approaches to ethics in education and seeks to provide a more adequate and appropriate context for pedagogical discourse on ethics.
The professional standards that educators in British Columbia are expected to meet include many ethical concepts, such as “care,” “trust,” “honesty” and “integrity.” However, what does a “caring relationship” look like, and how can educators balance the demands of fairness with the demands of care? What other ethical dilemmas do educators face, and based on what ethical principles or other grounds do they make decisions in such situations? This course explores the “codes of ethics” prescribed by professional organizations, then moves beyond these codes to consider ethics as ethos or disposition. Students will be asked to examine their moral values, where these values come from, and how they reconcile these values with professional demands in concrete situations. Through this examination students will gain insight into what they, as teachers, stand for and how they conceive of their role as agents of change.
Ethics and Education Forty Years Later

Ethics and Education is one of the most significant works in twentieth-century philosophy of education. At least in the United States, however, it is now rarely read or discussed. In this essay, Bryan Warnick looks at the virtues and vices of Ethics and Education, examining some major criticisms of the book in light of key developments in philosophy and educational theory that have occurred since it was first published. He finds that some of the criticisms seem unjustified and overstated, while others can be met with a reading of the text that places its language analysis within a framework of communitarian ethics, a move made possible by rejecting Peters's fact/value dichotomy. This way of reading Ethics and Education reveals an interesting conception of what philosophy of education can be: namely, a sort of normative analytic anthropology. It also shows the value of engaging more with the recent history of philosophy of education.

There are instances when their responsibility toward their students comes into conflict with the demands of the institutional realm of the school or their relationship with colleagues and parents. " However, what does a " caring relationship " look like, and how can educators balance the demands of formal standards with the demands of care? What kind of ethical dilemmas do educators face, and based on what grounds do they make decisions in such situations? In this course students will be encouraged to share and analyze ethical dilemmas that arise in the teaching profession and examine their own ethical values, where these values come from, and how to reconcile these values with professional demands in concrete situations. This course encourages students to reflect on how they see their own role as moral agents. COURSE OBJECTIVES This course prepares students to: • recognize how school and teachers reflect moral values; • appreciate that ethical questions arise continuously in the practice of teaching and be equipped to tackle them;
