Science, Biology and Chemistry at one New Zealand high school are taught using several approaches. This paper uses a pre-defined combination of Bigg's model of constructive alignment, Bloom's taxonomy and Biggs and Collis' SOLO taxonomy to identify the occurrence of the multi structural thinking level in current assessments and teaching\learning strategies of science, chemistry and biology for Y7-13. This is an attempt to identify opportunities for students to develop their thinking levels. Focus group interviews, teacher and student-directed structured questionnaires and structured analyses of current assessments target the multi-structural thinking level. Preliminary data shows a 10% frequency of this level at Y7-9, 36% at Y10-11 and 30% at Y12-13. The research work refers to other thinking levels for evaluation purposes. Thinking Level in Education: A Complete Revision of Anderson’s Taxonomy

The study aimed to revise Anderson’s taxonomy and implement the new taxonomy in learning. The study used the descriptive method and there were 6 types of instruments used according to new taxonomy. The results showed that students’ knowledge scores were still in a very low category at the Natural science, Environment, and Social Science at School and University levels. This study concluded that a new taxonomy had been developed and its implementation indicated that students’ knowledge score was still very low.
Contemporary Pedagogical Approaches for Developing Higher Level Thinking on Science Classes

The school is the mirror of a society. To create and develop good education means to realize objectives that would reflect its sense. In current education, the hierarchy of values that should be set and implemented is asymmetrically positioned. In successful school, the student should become the meaning and the purpose of the content that will introduce him/her into the world of competition and competence in order to enable successful communication with it. How can a teaching lesson become a workshop in which new ideas, creative solutions, new forms of research and new knowledge are being undercrossed?! The research that has been done in this paper aims to investigate the introduction of practical teaching and application of reforms in teaching biology in the six primary urban schools in Stip, R. Macedonia. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews made with 11 experienced teachers of biology and were analyzed their class planes. The results showed that teachers occasionally introduced a small number of enhanced instructional strategies that explicitly match the formal curriculum in their classes, such as: presenting, analyzing and generalizing experimental results from practical teaching of biology in various forms. However, teachers have used fewer strategies that target encouraging higher level thinking, such as to induce students to ask questions or to learn about problem solving strategies used during lessons. Differences were identified between teachers regarding the use of rich teaching strategies during lessons, and their beliefs about the abilities of students to develop the ability to think at a higher level.

There were still many teachers who had difficulty making student learning assessment instruments. The orientation of the learning carried out was still at the level of low-level thinking (remembering, memorizing, and understanding) so that students had low knowledge. This study aimed to develop an instrument for assessing science learning outcomes on Theme 8 based on Higher Order Thinking Skills. This type of research was development research. This study explores secondary school Malaysian teachers' conceptions of Bloom's Taxonomy of the cognitive domain and their integration of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in science instruction and assessment. Employing a qualitative research design, the study involved semistructured interviews with four science teachers from two secondary schools to investigate (1) teachers' understanding and perceptions of Bloom's Taxonomy, and (2) their strategies for incorporating HOTS in their instructional and assessment practices. The findings unveiled the teachers' optimistic views on Bloom's Taxonomy and its perceived positive impact on student learning. However, their integration of the taxonomy into instruction was limited, with the inclusion of Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and HOTS tasks and activities contingent on the academic abilities of the student groups. Notably, some teachers harbor a misconception that only high-ability students can engage in HOTS, leading to an emphasis on LOTS activities in classrooms with lower-ability students. Additionally, teachers were found to utilize different sets of pedagogical approaches and strategies when dealing with lowability and high-ability groups of learners. The study concludes that there is a critical need for targeted professional development to correct misconceptions and enhance teacher capabilities in effectively integrating HOTS. Future research should examine the influence of teacher beliefs on instructional practices more comprehensively, incorporating classroom observations and document analysis to provide a more holistic understanding of how cognitive domain theories are integrated into practical teaching methodologies.

This study attempted to analyse Grade 6 Science textbook and classroom instruction questions. The textbook and instructional questions were analysed using the Revised Bloom"s Taxonomy to ascertain the type of cognitive process and knowledge that is being taught in a Grade 6 Sciencecurriculum in a private international school in Dubai, U.A.E. Since questions play an important role in critical and creative thinking it is important to investigate the levels of questions used in the textbook and during instruction to determine the level of higher order thinking and critical thinking being taught in schools. The research used a qualitative approach of textbook analysis using the Revised Bloom"s Taxonomy where questions were tallied and analysed according to the appropriate cognitive dimension and knowledge dimension. Based on the results, it was found that lower order thinking questions are more commonly found both in the textbook and during instructions than higher order thinking questions. Furthermore, questions in the textbook emphasized "Remember" process, while instructional questions emphasized the "Understand" cognitive process. The most common knowledge dimension in both textbook and instructional process is the "Conceptual" knowledge. Based on this study"s findings it is recommended that textbook writers and educators include more higher order questions within curriculum and pedagogy to help improve critical thinking among learners.

In the 21st century, the population will need to possess basic skills in the areas of communication and higher problem-solving as well as have scientific and technological literacy; however, results from assessments by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) have indicated weak student performance in the area of thinking skills, making inferences from printed material, and interpreting the meaning of scientific data. The educational community has called for increased emphasis on problem-solvin and higher order skills in NAEP's 1985-86 assessment. The goal of a project, as funded to investigate these thinking skills, was to develop and test a variety of measures for use in a future national assessment. Part 1 of this pilot project developed and assessed the quality and appropriateness of certai innovative tasks and procedures to measure the higher-order thinking skills used in science and mathematics. First, a conceptual framework of higher-order skills used in science and mathematics, then prototype exercises, including "hands-on" activities, were developed. Some exercises were adapted from those used successfully by the United Kingdom's Assessment of Performance Unit in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. These efforts resulted in a set of tasks which asked the students to "think" about a variety of relationships in mathematics and science. Three categories of administrative formats were used (1) group activities to intact classes, (2) station activities consisting of "hands-on" tasks, and (3) full investigations which were administered to individual students. Almost 1.000 students in grades 3, 7, and 11 from 12 districts throughout the country participated. Scoring guides were developed, and student responses were categorized, entered into the computer, and analyzed. Results showed that students were responding to the tasks, and data conformed to expectations about basic developmental trends in thinking skills. In Part II, the pilot-tested tasks are presented individually. The group tasi.= Rre presented first, followed by the station activities, and then the individually administered full invnstigations. Th presentation for each task consists first of the task as the students saw it; followed by Cirections for the administrator and the observation checklist, where these are pertinent: a description of the apparatus; the scoring guide with illustrative examples of each score level: and summary comments about the task. The data on which the comments are based included student performance on each task by grade and by sex and the correlation coefficient between the number right on the mathematics and science items and student data for most of the tasks. Separate analyses by sex were conducted to determine if there were an obvious gender biases in the tasks. No tests for significance were done on the gender results. (JAZ)
Natural Science Higher Order Thinking Skills Analysis of Junior High School Students

The 2013 curriculum is learning curriculum that emphasizes higher-order thinking skills, besides learning activities also by training students with questions based on high-level thinking skills, namely by Trends in International Mathematics and Sciences Study (TIMSS). The application of high-level thinking skills needs attention and assessment in its application to the learning process in schools, especially in science learning. This research is descriptive research. This research was conducted at SMPN 2 Padang, SMPN 7 Padang and, SMPN 8 Padang. The total sample of 120 students, with each school 40 students. The instrument used to collect data was the 2011 TIMSS question script. Analysis of the data used was by scoring and determining grades in each school. The results showed that the achievement of high-level thinking ability of superior state junior high schools was based on an average of low categorized value of 346.6.
