Identification of nursing students' attitudes toward older people

The present study aims to identify nursing students' attitudes toward older people. This descriptive study was conducted with 166 nursing department students enrolled in a four-year undergraduate programme in a university located in Eastern Turkey. The participants were chosen using convenience sampling method, and data were collected through the Descriptive Characteristics Form and Turkish version of Kogan's Attitudes toward Older People Scale (KAOPS). It was found that the students participating in the study had positive attitudes toward older people, and the mean scores of those who wanted to work with older people after graduation were significantly high (p < 0.05). Scale mean scores according to receiving gerontology nursing course showed that there were no significant differences between the groups who received gerontology nursing course and who did not. Attitudes Towards Older People in Croatian and Slovenian Nursing Students

Background: Croatia and Slovenia are neighboring countries with marked differences in high school and undergraduate nursing curricula. The aim was to assess and compare attitudes toward the elderly among undergraduate nursing students in Croatia and Slovenia and identify factors associated with positive/negative attitudes.Subjects and methods: This was a cross-sectional survey conducted between September, 2017 and July, 2018 among undergraduate nursing students at five higher education institutions: three in Slovenia and two in Croatia. Background: Due to changing demographics in the population, the majority of current nursing students will work mostly with older people after graduation. It is known that most nursing students have little knowledge and interests in working with older people. There is a growing need for motivated nurses to provide care for older people as the quality of care is influenced by their attitudes. Aim of the study: Was to assess nursing students' attitudes towards older adult people. Setting: Faculty of Nursing, University of Mosul, Iraq. Subject: 67 Male and 166 Female students in College of Nursing. Tools of data collection: It is a questionnaire sheet including: Section (1) demographic data of the students, age, Stage study, gender, marital status and residences. Section (2) comprised the "Kogan Attitudes towards Older People Scale". Results: The mean Score of the first year, Second-year, Thirdyear and Fourth-year students for negative attitude were 3.58, 3.46, 3.55, and 3.47, respectively. The mean KOPS scores in male and female students were 3.44 and 3.54, respectively. Conclusion: This study concluded that the nursing students had minimal negative attitude of toward old people. Recommendations: The study recommended that education should focus on increasing positive working experiences with older people. Revision and improvement of the curricula might be needed to enhance the knowledge and attitudes of the Iraq nursing students.

Assessing attitudes toward elderly among nurses working in the city of Ilam

Objective: Several factors affect the quality of care in the elderly, such as nurses' attitudes. This study aimed to assess nurses' attitude toward elderly in the city of Ilam. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 230 nurses working at public hospitals in the city of Ilam. Participants were selected using simple random sampling from the list of staff. The Kogan's attitude questionnaire was used to measure nurses' attitudes toward the elderly. Results: The mean age of respondents in this study was 32.65 (SD ¼ 7.67), and the score of attitudes toward the elderly was 144.96 (SD ¼ 51.75) in average. More than half (54.3%) of the nurses had negative attitudes toward the elderly. The results of ANOVA analysis showed significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed in the attitudes toward the elderly among the nurses as their ages, marital status, work experiences, and ward types differed. Conclusion: In conclusion, nurses in this study have marginally negative attitudes toward the elderly. Therefore, promoting nurses' attitudes toward the elderly is important to provide high-quality care.

The validity and reliability of Kogan's attitude towards old people scale in the Turkish society

This study was conducted methodologically in order to determine the validity and reliability of Kogan's Attitude towards Old People Scale after being adapted to the Turkish Society. 145 female students, attending the 4 th and 5 th year of the faculty of Medical Sciences at Atatürk University, and 118 nurses, working at Ataturk University Aziziye-Yakutiye Research Hospitals, were included in the study. The sample group was chosen from the population using a non-probability convenience sampling method. A form containing demographic characteristics of nurses and nursing students, and the Turkish version of Kogan's Attitude towards Old People Scale were used to gather the required data. Data was analysed using the t-test, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, correlation, and factor analyses. In the study, Cronbach's Alpha Reliability Coefficient for Kogan's Attitude towards Old People Scale was 0.81, and the scale comprised of one factor. The attitude of working nurses towards old people was more positive in comparison to the attitude of student nurses. After analysis, the scale was deemed highly valid and reliable, and suitable to be used for Turkish society. The scale may be used in studies to evaluative attitude toward old people and quality of the care offered to older people.
