An Institutional Personal Learning Environment Enabler

In this paper, we first discuss the concept of Personal Learning Environment (PLE) with respect to highereducation institutions and Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). This discussion rapidly confronts us to the place of the PLE and self-directed learning and/or training inside the institution. We therefore introduce the concept of institutional PLE enabler (iPLEe), which is expected to stimulate students to create and use their own resources and institutional resources and share them with peers during formal and informal learning activities. Next, we describe a proposal for a federated design and implementation of the iPLEe within multiple institutions. Personal learning environments implications and challenges

Evolving web-based technologies make possible the creation of personal learning environments (PLEs) that provide learners with increasing control of their individual learning processes. This paper reviews the concept of PLEs in the literature and suggests some possible implications for academic practice and institutional policy in higher education.

A multi-pronged approach to the enterprise-wide implementation of a personal learning environment

This paper describes the multi-pronged approach Griffith University has been undertaking in its implementation of an enterprise-wide ePortfolio platform (i.e. Personal Learning Environment). At the heart of the multi-faceted approach is a culture of collaboration between academic groups, the central learning and teaching unit, technology services, careers and employment and student success. A key principle guiding this approach has been facilitation of the sharing of ideas and resources from the identification of user requirements, to the integration across courses and programs. Together, four streams of activities have been implemented which include: embedding within the curriculum by academics, enhancing University employability strategies, engaging students through extracurricular connections and embedding into professional activities of staff. Personal learning environments (PLEs) hold the potential to address the needs of formal and informal learners for multi-sourced content and easily customisable learning environments. This chapter presents an overview of the European project ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments), which specialises in the development and evaluation of learning environments that can be personalised by individual learners according to their particular needs, thus enabling them to become self-regulated learners.

Personal Learning Environment (PLE) – as an idea, approach and concept – has demonstrated the potential to support a learner-centred digital learning ecosystem that is diverse, individualised, adaptive, integrated, transparent and skill-based. In a PLE, the locus of control shifts away from the institution to individuals, to the agency of individuals, helping them take control of their learning and build a personal cyberinfrastructure and learning ecosystem that extends learning beyond the classroom, institution, or organisation’s boundaries using distributed and portable tools. Personal Learning Environment for Higher Education–A First Prototype

Abstract It is obvious that in the future the World Wide Web as a whole together with the many distributed online applications, tools and services play a very significant role in Technology Enhanced Learning. The integration of all these possibilities on the web in a Personal Learning Environment (PLE) in a way that the learners can select, individualize and customize the learning resources and services according to their needs and interests can support learners and teachers and enhance learning in general.

Integrating personal and institutional virtual learning environments

The present project aims to introduce the use of Personal Learning Environment, PLE, in the educational practices at the Post-Graduate of Educational Psychology. Currently, this Post-Graduate program uses a Virtual Community as a platform for the promotion of the relationship between teachers and students from the several promotions of Master degree and Ph. D. The program also offers virtual classrooms to support the face-to-face sessions for mandatory subjects and for the complementary curricular activities. Our next step will be to add a new level between on-line classrooms and the virtual community and offering students the opportunity to build their own PLE.
