Some Sociological Aspects of Skilled Migration from Hungary

Acta Universitatis Sapientiae, 2011

The emigration of highly skilled people from Hungary happened in waves, according to the latest records shown in this article the last wave was at the millennium and the EU accession. While Western Europe is challenged by the threat of their professionals moving to the USA, if we look at Eastern Europe and in this case Hungary, apparently not only the USA seems to have this kind of pulling attractiveness but also some Western European countries, especially the Benelux states, UK and Germany. In this article we will first show the data available on the size of the Hungarian skilled migrant population. Afterwards we examine the latest wave of emigration from the view of the people who encountered it: results of two online survey-based sociological researches will be presented. Since this method is relatively new in approaching skilled migration, we address the usability and burdens of online survey in this situation.

The impact of language competencies and foreign expriences in Hungary on working abroad and the salaries in case of University of Pécs graduates

In this study we want to emphasize the importance and opportunities of the Hungarian higher education (HE) in developing the language competencies of the tertiary students. This kind of openness is essential in meeting the requirements of internationalization which is a new challenge for the institutions after the several big changes they faced already in the past two decades. These facts reshaped the whole HE system and the institutions are competing with each other in the smaller domestic and at the same time in the bigger global market. We used binary logistic regression and linear regression to reveal the connection on the one hand between the probability of working abroad and foreign language competences, foreign experiences; on the other hand their impact on the level of salaries. We ran these methods on the database of Graduate Career Tracking System having been conducted at the University of Pécs since 2010. This institution is traditionally one of the biggest universities in Hungary, located in the Southern Transdanubia, which is a depressed region from several aspects. The services and suggestions related to the competence development can help the University of Pécs and the other institutions to get out of the negative spiral.

How to manage the study-to-work transition? a comparative study of Hungarian and French graduate engineering students’ perception of their employability

European Journal of Engineering Education, 2019

The purpose of this article is to explore graduate engineering students' perception of their employability perspectives, strategy and the skills and competencies they require for their career. We have applied qualitative methodology to obtain a better understanding of the students' transition from studies to professional life and conducted 28 semi-structured interviews in France and Hungary. Our results indicate that the engineering students have a markedly different perception of their employment prospects, strategy and the role of technical and nontechnical skills to this end. The Hungarian students have short-term employability perspectives with a mainly informal job-seeking approach and they mostly consider technical skills as being of importance for their employability. On the contrary, the French students have a long-term employability vision applying a formal job-seeking approach with a considerably higher level of engagement in the engineering profession and consideration of the importance of non-technical skills in obtaining the desired work position.

Globalization of the labour market – Circular migration in Hungary

Journal of International Studies, 2019

Explanation of the recently intensified willingness to migrate has many components, among which migration for the purpose of employment is a paramount one. The study deals with the exploration of the three basic characteristics of globalizing employment in Central and Eastern Europe and Hungary in particular: migration motivations of foreign employees, their labour market characteristics and the degree of their social integration. The authors aim to provide a comprehensive picture of the content of engagement-which is continuously becoming significant in practice-of highly qualified employees originating from developed countries. The findings at the end of the analysisdue to the size and homogenous nature of the sample-are mostly thoughtexperiments, but we expect to provide a valid contribution to scientific and everyday discussions about migration.

The situation of graduate employees on the Hungarian labor market

Business Ethics and Leadership, 2017

Our paper presents the labor market situation of graduate career starter in Hungary based on empirical data (randomly distributed questionnaires of 202 employees). The objective of the research was to survey how this little segment of employees feels on the Hungarian labor market. According to our hypothesis studying and working represent a great value for the graduate career starters and also they are satisfied with their position obtained on the labor market. Despite the uncertain economic situation the results have justified out hypothesis according to which studying represents an outstanding value for graduate career starters and presumes their satisfaction on the llabor market. The examination, which is only part of complex research, was justified by the labor market situation of graduate career starters whose position cannot be described as 'smooth'.

Employment of foreign students after graduation in Hungary in the context of entrepreneurship and sustainability

Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Issues, 2021

In recent decades, more and more international students, including paid and scholarship-funded students coming to study in Hungary, most of them are studying in higher education institutions. The experience of studying abroad has not only broadened foreign students' horizons, but also increased their entrepreneurial awareness to a certain extent, especially increased the number of foreign companies or businesses set up by foreign students to trade and cooperate with the host country. In this sense, they are moving forward to entrepreneurship. At the same time, entrepreneurial and sustainable education in universities also play a very important role in the development of international students' awareness. After graduation, some international students choose to stay and work in Hungary, while others choose to return to their home countries or work in other countries. The present study was conducted to understand whether overseas experience has sustainable influences on career development and employment choice of foreign students, testing whether their employment intentions have changed after studying in Hungary. Furthermore, whether international students' attributes have relationships with their employment intentions. In addition, it is necessary to explore the main reasons for choosing different employment intentions. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, Paired Sample T-test and Crosstabulation were used in SPSS. The overall results show that the experience of studying abroad does have a sustainable impact on the employment intention of foreign students, but due to the different attributes of foreign students, the reasons, effects and degrees of the influence are different.

Should I Stay or Should I go? Migration Potential Among Hungarian Youth

Youth and Generation Studies, 2024

In our study, we examine the emigration intention of young people in Hungary using the last dataset of the Hungarian youth sociology research project, the Hungarian large sample youth survey. Over the course of the research, 8,000 young Hungarians between the ages of 15 and 29 were interviewed; the questionnaire also included questions about moving abroad. The Hungarian large sample youth survey was launched in 2000 and was repeated every four years thereafter. The target group of the survey was young people living in Hungary. Given the target group, the research lacks input from Hungarian young people who have left the country for a shorter or longer period time, meaning that the underlying reasons for migrating abroad cannot be examined using this dataset.

Emigration Intentions Among Hungarian Youth

Review of Sociology, 2024

In our study, we examine the demographic and social characteristics of young people in Hungary who have plans to move abroad based on the last dataset of the Hungarian youth sociology research project, the Hungarian large-sample youth survey. Over the course of the research, 8,000 young Hungarians between the ages of 15 and 29 were interviewed in 2020, and the questionnaire also included questions about moving abroad. The social and economic consequences of emigration are largely determined by the social and demographic composition of the emigrating population.

Patterns of Success amongst Hungarians Living in the UK

2016

This paper investigates the characteristics of Hungarian migration into the UK, the distinctive features of different migrant groups, and the chances for perceived individual success. The study is based on an on-line study conducted in 2014, using a large sample, albeit a non-representative method of data collection. By presenting the results related to migration to the UK, one can have a broader picture on present day migration starting from Hungary. The study demonstrates that migration from Hungary is neither a straightforward, nor a mono-dimensional process: migrants abroad form a diaspora in a transnational environment that maintains several links to their country of origin. Professional development, fulfilling individual potential, and career-mobility all play a very important role in migration. A significant number of migrants consider migration a success, and experience upward mobility while changing their places of residence. Venturing out from the ethnic “niche” seems to b...
