The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of portfolio assessment in enhancing student learning and the exam achievements of students in the teaching of geography. Students undertaking the Bachelor of Teacher Education programme in a University in Kayseri participated in the study. One hundred fifty five of the students underwent portfolio assessment. Portfolio evaluation method is used in an undergraduate course in which geography teaching is implemented. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used together to evaluate the study. Firstly, the simple correlation analysis was studied to determine a relationship between the students' exam achievements with portfolio performances. After that, to determine the qualitative difference the students were selected the following criteria, showing a good or lowest performance in their exam assessment result. The quantitative results showed that there was not an increase in general self-learning throughout the period of the portfolio programme. As a qualitative results; only, the some willing teacher's candidates reported more attentive that will help them to become effective teachers. Grades for these students were above the average.
