Academic Entrepreneurship in India

Universities acting as catalyst for entrepreneurial activities are central to the phenomenon of academic entrepreneurship. Lack of appropriate academic entrepreneurship models has hindered the smooth transfer of knowledge/technology from university to industry in India. The study explores the synergy between the academia and industry through academic entrepreneurship which is crucial to develop a world class higher education system. This paper attempts to understand the processes and stages of academic entrepreneurship activities besides focussing on education and entrepreneurship in India. Further, it discusses a few models and frameworks which integrate academic entrepreneurship, economic development and education in developing countries. The paper concludes with the argument that it is essential to restructure education/research to enable its integration within the economy which nurtures entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship Research in Indian Universities

This paper presents a critical study of the trends in the growth and development of entrepreneurship research in Indian Universities during the last four and a half years. This study reveals the number and percentage of PhD programmes in entrepreneurship carried out in various Indian universities in comparison to that of Social Sciences. The distribution of research in entrepreneurship, university wise, gender wise and language wise has been examined. Implications on the status of entrepreneurship research in Indian universities are also drawn.

Entrepreneurial Potential and Higher Education System in India

Entrepreneurship education enhances the entrepreneurial potential of students, leading them to take up an entrepreneurial career. But, in India, a vast majority of youths with latent entrepreneurial potential are passing out of colleges without the needed basic entrepreneurial skills. The inconsistency towards entrepreneurship development policy is hurting the economy as a whole. The study analyses entrepreneurial potential of students and entrepreneurship education in the higher education system. It also examines whether there exists an alignment among them using the data triangulation method. The findings signify that entrepreneurial potential of students is on the upper side, and entrepreneurship education in higher education system is below average. The outcome of this study highlights the increasing need to focus on entrepreneurship education in higher education.

Entrepreneurial Engagements of Academics in Engineering Universities of Pakistan

This paper gives an account of entrepreneurial engagements of academics in engineering universities of Pakistan. The study adds to literature on academic entrepreneurship in developing economies perspective. Data was collected through self-administered questionnaire from six engineering universities of Pakistan and 306 academics participated in the survey. Findings reveal that academics are involved in all the categories of academic entrepreneurship. However, it is quite evident that academics prefer the soft side of entrepreneurship than hard side. External teaching, seminars and consultancy are the preferred strategies compared to formation of companies within universities or without universities. The paper presents policy recommendations and future research opportunities in developing economies.

THE ROLE OF UNIVERSITY IN CREATING ENTREPRENEUR

The high unemployment rate in some countries is becoming a serious problem. The research is based on quantitative data obtained cross-sectionally from students studying at the Entrepreneurship Department. Empirical findings indicate that the respondent group is highly committed to the utility of entrepreneurship education for economic growth, which indicates the position and benefits of entrepreneurship at the macro level. The implication of this is providing entrepreneurship programs must take on the burden of ensuring that the lecturer used to deliver the courses highly qualified.
