The messianic concept in modern Judaism

Teologia i Moralność

The history of the Messiah in Judaism is a history of disappointed hopes. Again and again, there were salvation fi gures to whom this role was ascribed. But redemption from occupation and foreign rule, exile, oppression and persecution failed to materialize. Therefore, the expectation of the Messiah fell to the periphery of Jewish theology. This article examinesin what ways the messianic concept plays a role in modern times and what it contributes to describing the relationship between God and humanity in Judaism. The author intends to show the development from the abandonment of a personal Messiah towards the affi rmation of the prophets’ hope for a universal messianic age in which the duty of all people to participate in the healing of the world becomes central. What becomes also clear is: The messiah idea cannot be a bridge between Christianity and Judaism.

The Transmission of the Term Messiah in the Old Testament: A Survey on Scholarly Designation of Messianism

2019

Review Article The term Messiah in the Old Testament had no one strict meaning. The meaning of the term was developed over a long period of time. Various designations of messianism are equally influenced by the historical situation of the biblical interpreters and their ability to interact with the text their social circumstances and their ability to engage other scholars. This paper is a survey of various scholars and their views as can be found in their books and publications. Scholars at a certain time in history focussed on certain layers of messianic characters as they deduced from the biblical text. The variance in meaning confirms that the messianic characterisation was equally rooted in the circumstances of interpreters of different world views. Their texts confirm to be social constructs of the interpreters‟ circumstances. This is confirmed in the variety of meaning related to the term.

The Historical Jesus in New Testament Perspective by Abimiku, Sunday Adigizi

Scholarship steered critical intellectual search about Jesus which makes the universal believe on Jesus as being hundred percent Divine and hundred percent man to be subjected to academic scrutiny. Some modern critical scholars challenged the divinity of Jesus using historical-critical methods. This study intends to examine the Biblical depictions of Jesus in New Testament perspective which is reliable and authentic portraits of Jesus, the basis for faith, spiritual development, and theological scholarship. We live in the world of complex conditions and factors of philosophical idea, critical intelligence, historical insight, and religious emotion without deep theological perspective. The greatest achievement of theology is understanding The Historical Jesus in New Testament Perspective by Abimiku, Sunday Adigizi 2 of Jesus himself: both have proved to be fountain-heads for wide collective discussions of ancient and modern attitudes to religion and theology, nationalism and race, gender and the family (Smith, 1990; Kelley, 2002; Moxnes, 2003). Hence there is need to contribute to the ongoing scholarship on the historical reassessment of Jesus using relevant New Testament text.

Review of the RBL Jesus the Messiah by Herbert W. Bateman IV, Darrell L. Bock, and Gordon H. Johnston, reviewed by David S. Ritsema

Herbert W. Bateman IV, Darrell L. Bock, and Gordon H. Johnston join forces to trace the exegetical juggernaut of messianic texts through what they call the " messianic puzzle. " Dividing the task into three parts, Johnston handles the first section on the Hebrew Bible, while Bateman takes the second section on Second Temple Jewish literature, and Bock handles the final part on the New Testament. Bateman's introduction explains a threefold reading strategy that moves beyond authorial intent toward what is called a " canonical " reading. The authors propose that the messianic interpretation of Scriptures happened progressively and that this process intensified in the centuries immediately preceding Jesus—particularly as a political response to the rise of the Hasmonean dynasty. While this process helps explain the development of Jewish messianism, the authors maintain, it does not account for the discrepancies and discontinuities one finds in the portrait of the Messiah in the New Testament (e.g., a " suffering " messiah). The authors thus propose a solution: the best explanation for the unique portrait of Jesus as Messiah in the New Testament owes its origin to the mind of a single person—the historical Jesus himself.
