Mapping Managerial Competence of Primary School Principals in South Sumatera

In this quantitative research, we drew the managerial competence considered weak from 16 (sixteen) managerial competencies of Primary School's Principals in South Sumatera based on Regulation of National Education Minister Republic Indonesia Number 13 of 2007. The instrument used was questionnaire. The result mentioned that there were 8 (eight) sub managerial competencies considered weak and need to be coached 1) developing the school's organization; 2) creating the conducive and innovative school's culture; 3) managing teachers and staff optimally; 4) managing school and community relationships; 5) managing students; 6) managing curriculum development and learning activities; 7) managing school information system; 8) monitoring, evaluating and reporting the implementation of school's program activities. The results contributed to the Ministry of Education and Culture Republic Indonesia in conducting the managerial competence of Primary School's Principals in South Sumatera.

THE MANAGERIAL LEADERSHIP STYLES OF SCHOOL PRINCIPALS FOR SCHOOL EFFECTIVENESS: A STUDY OF SIX SECONDARY

The purpose of this study was to investigate the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness at secondary schools of the Dutywa Education District in the Eastern Cape Province of the Republic of South. The literature review reflects theories concerning the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness. In order to attain the aims and objectives of the study, the researcher used the qualitative research method, both in collecting and analyzing the data. The case study design was used to describe and access the phenomenon and the purposive sampling method was used to select (6) secondary school principals. An open ended interview schedule was used for the face-to-face in-depth interviews on the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness at secondary schools of the Dutywa Education District. Themes were drawn from the responses of the participants and analysed. Some of the findings were: Democratic and participatory leadership styles were used by the school principals to achieve maximum cooperation from both experienced and beginning teachers and the learners in the schools. Laissez fair and autocratic styles of leadership appeared to be undesirable for the management of schools. For school principals' effective management, they need to do proper planning, organising and scheduling of activities, assigning duties to teachers and delegating some of their work to competent teachers. The reasons for school principals' ineffectiveness in this study were: favouritism, over-familiar relationships with some teachers, ignoring teachers' personal problems, workload, lack of support and cooperation from teachers. Incorrect interpretation of educational policies were seen to lead to chaotic situations, poor performance of both teachers and learners, division between learners and teachers, a lack of unity between school stake-holders, poor job satisfaction and lack of trust and respect for the principals concerned. Factors contributing to principals' incorrect interpretation of educational policies and execution of management roles were: negligence, lack of knowledge and ability to interpret educational policies, lack of proper induction programmes and training of principals and lack of support on policy matters from the Department of Education. Contributing factors resulting in barriers to principals' ineffectiveness in the management of schools were: failure to give proper instructions to teachers and learners, failure to effectively use of available funds in the school, failure to implement all educational programmes in the school including co-curricular and extra mural activities, lack of experience, lack of support from both the Department of Education and the parents, lack of resources, high staff turnover, favourtisms and failure to hold teachers accountable for poor work done. Mechanisms deemed to overcome the factors leading to barriers to principals' execution of their management roles at schools were: making the effort to be knowledgeable about educational policies, timely responses to problems in the school, regular consultation with stakeholders, employment of SGB teachers, taking direct supervision of instructions in classrooms and endeavoring to have good relations and gaining support from the SGB and the parents. The researcher made some recommendations on the managerial leadership styles of school principals for school effectiveness at secondary schools of the Dutywa Education District.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of Departmental Heads Managerial Skills on the implementation of School Programs, among secondary schools in Kakamega Central and East Districts. Implementation of head school managerial competence in public primary school Kalasey, North Sulawesi, Indonesia

The managerial skills of school principals has been implemented in one of the primary schools in Manado city, North Sulawesi, namely SDN Kalasey. The school, which is located on Jalan Raya Tanawangko, Kalasey Village, Lorong Murex, Mandolang District, has now been accredited B and has 287 students assisted by 15 educators. In addition, this school is equipped with facilities for the principal's room, teacher's room, library room, canteen, toilet, UKS warehouse room, also equipped with other infrastructure such as computers, LCD projectors, TV and internet. This study determined the effect of principal managerial competence and school facilities on teacher performance. This research is a quantitative study with a determination design using an ex post facto research design. The sample in this study was all teachers in SD Negeri in Sekayu District, Musi Banyuasin Regency, consisting of 97 teachers. Management and Supervision Competences of State Elementary School Principals

This research investigated the level of management and supervision competencies of State Elementary School Principals at East Padang, West Sumatera regarded from teachers’ and principals’ responses. This study is quantitative descriptive with total population of 291 teachers and principals of 34 State Elementary Schools. The sample is 137 teachers and 16 principals that were taken by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected by using questionnaire and were analyzed by finding out the level of achievement. Management Capabilities of School Administrators vis-à-vis Performance of Elementary Schools in the Philippines

School Administrators are evaluated based on a variety of factors, including student achievement on standardized tests, enrol ment in advanced placement courses, and student attendance and graduation rates. Thus this study aimed to determine the association of management capability of elementary school administrators and school's performance in elementary schools of Leyte Division in the Province of Leyte, Philippines. Using a descriptive-correlation research design and survey instruments to gather the information, a total of 112 elementary schools' administrators participated in the study. Results shows that as to the management capability school administrators are very much capable in creating a student-centered learning climate and managing the school operations than human resources management and professional development. As to schools' performance, the Participation rate, cohort survival rate, promotion rate drop-out rate, repetition rate, and graduation rate their school performance are considered as superior. However, retention rate, transition rate, completion rate and teacher-pupil ratio only performed meeting the standards. Moreover, the study reveal that the profile and management capability of school administrators have no significant relationships with their school performance.

Managerial Capacity, Demographic Characteristics and Principal Administrative Effectiveness in Secondary Schools in Ibadan Municipal Council of Oyo State, Nigeria

This study was carried out to examine the relationship between Managerial Capacity, Demographic Characteristics and Principal Administrative Effectiveness in secondary schools in Ibadan Municipal Council of Oyo State, Nigeria. The researcher adopted a correlational survey research design. The population for the study consisted of 956 teachers and 26 principals in all. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 10 senior secondary schools. In each of the schools, 15 teachers and 1 principal were randomly selected for the study making a total sample of 160 sample altogether. Questionnaires titled ''Managerial Capacity and Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire (MCDCQ) and Administrative Effectiveness Questionnaire (AEQ)'' were used to elicit relevant data for the study. The reliability of the instrument was obtained through Cronbach's Alpha reliability test at r = 0.7803 and 0.7561 respectively. Three hypotheses were formulated respectively to guide the study. Thus, Person Product Moment Correlation and multiple regressions were used to test the hypotheses. The result revealed a moderate, positive linear relationship between managerial capacity and principal administrative effectiveness at (0.462, p<0.05). Also, the result showed a moderate, positive linear relationship between demographic characteristics and principal administrative effectiveness at (0.374, p<0.05). The Findings likewise revealed that the combination of all the independent variables also allowed reliable prediction of principal's administrative effectiveness. (F(2.157) =29.201, p= 0.00). Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the school principals should be exposed to training, seminars and workshops from time to time on effective school administration.

Managerial Skills And Enhancement Strategies Of Secondary School Principals

This paper investigated the managerial skills possessed by secondary school principals in Anambra State and the enhancement strategies for national transformation. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. A proportionate stratified random sample of 268 principals and 1159 teachers totaling 1427 respondents, took part in the study. A fourteen- item questionnaire was used for data collection. Data was analyzed using mean scores, standard deviation and t-test. The finding indicated that the many principals did not possess the managerial skills for effective management of secondary school for national transformation. It was also found out that there was a significant difference between the mean rating of principals and teachers on the managerial skills and enhancement strategies for the principals. Among the recommendations made were that principals that did not specialize in education should be encouraged to get at least a diploma in Education. They should be encouraged or sponsored to undertake continuous self professional development. These would contribute to enhancing their managerial skills.

Relationship between Principals’ Management Experience and Academic Performance in Public Secondary Schools in Kericho County, Kenya

The study sought to establish the relationship between principals, management experience and students' academic performance in public secondary schools in Kericho County, Kenya. Kericho County public secondary schools have had a small portion of its schools performing relatively well while some perform on the average, the majority performs poorly. The study was guided by this hypothesis: H 0 : There is no significant statistical relationship between principals' management experience and academic performance in public secondary schools in Kericho County. The study adopted survey research design as a framework for data collection. Targeted population was two thousand four hundred and ninety nine teachers posted and working in one hundred and nineteen secondary schools in Kericho County. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select fifty three secondary schools in the County. Out of this target population, one hundred and nineteen were head teachers. Simple random sampling was used to select one thousand and sixty teachers, while stratified sampling was used to select the head teachers from the targeted schools to participate in the study. The reliability of the instruments was established by computing a test re-test reliability coefficient. This was done by administering the test twice, but allowing an interval of one month between them. The pre-testing of the instrument was done in ten non-participating schools in Kipkelion Sub-county The test yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.78 for the principals' questionnaire and 0.72 for the teachers' questionnaire. Two sets of questionnaires known as the profile of leadership behavior (form LB) and profile of own behavior (form OB) for head teachers and teachers respectively and Interview Schedule were used as the primary tools for data collection. This research embraced an eclecticism paradigm. The findings revealed that the head teachers' leadership styles had a strong relationship with the schools' K.C.S.E results. The study recommends that head teachers' training in school policy and management should be strengthened and supervision of the teachers should be objective. Head teachers should use a balance of autocratic and democratic leadership styles to achieve better K.C.S.E results. This research is vital in its contribution to understanding effective school management in the light of leadership styles and student academic performance.
