Eisenstein, Diderot's Reader (original) (raw)
2015
Abstract
The Soviet film-maker Sergei Eisenstein, one of the giants of world cinema and considered as one of the ‘fathers of editing’, possessed a colossal and varied culture, in which French literature had an important place. He had a very good knowledge of Diderot’s aesthetic writings, which he often quoted in his theory of editing. This article, based on a study of Eisenstein’s writings, examines the role of Diderot’s ideas in the elaboration of Eisenstein’s conception of editing.
