HOME AS POEM: THE ARTISTIC AND METHODOLOGICAL POSSIBILITIES OF A POETICS OF SPACE
Art/Research International , 2020
What does it mean to be home? We began asking this provocative question well before COVID-19, well before the collective crisis the world experienced which sent both of us back into our current homes. Exploring such a question through poetry writing may provide insights about individuals’ lived experiences, and, therefore, we contend it is worthwhile for scholars, artists and educators to widen possibilities for poetic method and craft related to writing about home. In this paper, we, two poets, arts-based education scholars, and Pittsburgh natives, offer pathways into exploring notions of home through the writing of poetry grounded in the ideas of Gaston Bachelard’s (1958/1964) seminal text, The Poetics of Space. To do so, we each offer and discuss two original poems on the topic of home to illustrate a number of compelling avenues scholars and research participants; educators and students might explore as they write poems evoking their own unique conceptions of home.

It is Not an Island It's A World: Fortnite and "Worldness
2021
Fortnite is a massively multiplayer online firstperson shooter that grew rapidly in 2018 to become one of the world's most popular games, with current estimates of 350 million active players. In this paper we argue that Fortnite's success can-in part-be attributed to the affective sensation of worldness that it creates via its 10 week 'seasons'. Via a study of children's digital play cultures, we discuss the implications of this way of thinking about the spatial, social, and material structures of the gameworld for understanding Fortnite's success, countering discourses of 'videogame addiction', and guiding future research.

"And You Know This Man": Love, Humor, and Masculinity in Friday
Black Camera: An International Film Journal, 2017
Black film directors in the early 1990s created visual representations of black urban experiences in predominantly impoverished areas described as hood films” The 1995 film Friday (dir. F. Gary Gray) used humor and laughter help to change the tenor of hood films from the early 1990s. This article explores the use of humor and vulnera- bility in the construction of black masculinities in Friday to argue that the subtle emo- tional labor throughout the film provides nuance to the gangsta rap iconography by depicting black life in the hood beyond the sites of grief and anger—two emotions that largely encapsulated the representations of black men in rap and film in the gangsta rap era of the early ’90s. The film indirectly centers the emotional lives of black men oscillating between joy, love, and fear as the necessary affective range of self-care and survival in the hood.
