The PSM magazine : no. 12(3) : summer 1983

Malta Philatelic Society, 1983

First of all I must congratulate you for the great job you have done with the magazine, in such a short period of time as editor. The contents, theprintingand even thepaperusedarefirstclass. Now that the stamps ofG .B. used in Malta are being dealt with, I thought the following remarks may bedealtwithinthefuture. The first photostat is of a cover in my collection, showing A25 cancellation dated 8 JA 1881. The earliestdateforthispostmarkin theM.S.C. Haqndbook,page33 ,is6April1881. The second is more complicated. It is astampless cover of 8 JU 1869, showing the manuscript "6". Until recently I was under the impression that this was used during a shortage of G.B. stamps in Malta. (According to Robson Lowe's Encyclopedia of British Empire Postage Stamps, volume 1 1952, page 380, such a shortage did exist). In volume 10 page 2 ofthe M.S.C. Newsletter, Mr. John Trory claimed that the manuscript "6" appearing in both the M.S.C. Handbook, and Said's Catalogue, is an Italian markingappliedonlyinMessina. As can be clearly seen, the circular date stamps were not part of any duplex cancellation. There is no traceofanypostagestampsonthiscover,exceptforthemarking22Y2inthetoprightcorner. The single circle date is also an oddity, as it bears the code letter ''B''. According to the M.S.C. Handbook page 32, only the code letter'' A'' has ever been recorded on the single ring date stamp, Large MAL-ll. 4 Anyopinionconcerningthis cover and it's markings will be appreciated verymuch. Thank you and best wishes for continued success as Editor oftheP .S.M. Magazine.

Symbol formation

Sign Systems Studies

Symbol formation is a term used to unify the view on the interdependencies in the research of the Hamburg University before 1933: the Philosophical Institute (William Stern, Ernst Cassirer), the Psychological Institute (Stern) with its laboratory (Heinz Werner) in cooperation with the later joining Umwelt Institut (Jakob von Uexküll). The term, definitely used by Cassirer and Werner, is associated with the personalistic approach: “Keine Gestalt ohne Gestalter” (Stern), but also covers related terms like “melody of motion” (Uexküll), and “relational content” (Cassirer), discussing the term “empirical scheme” (Kant). All this scientific interest addressed personal forces to structure thresholds in equivalent stimuli. This view on intermodal formation allowed research in common aspects in the environments of animals, of children and adults to meet there the symbol formation of artists (Weimar Bauhaus) and poets like R. M. Rilke, a friend of Uexküll.
