Improving Students' Scientific Literacy Through Problem Based Learning

Jurnal Pendidikan LLDIKTI Wilayah 1 (JUDIK)

Scientific literacy ability is one of the competencies that students must have in this era of globalization. The purpose of this study was to determine the increase in students' scientific literacy skills through the application of problem based learning. This research was conducted using classroom action research methods in the Engineering Physics course. Each indicator of scientific literacy has increased from cycle I to cycle II. The scientific literacy context indicator increased from 67.86% to 82.14%, the knowledge indicator increased from 60.71% to 85.71%. Competency indicators also progressed from 53.57% to 78.57%, while attitude indicators experienced a fairly high increase from 42.86% to 75%. This indicates that students' scientific literacy skills can be improved through problem based learning. Therefore, this problem-based learning model needs to be applied at the tertiary level to be able to hone and develop scientific literacy skills that exist in students.

The Effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning in Improving Students Scientific Literacy Skills and Scientific Attitudes

Berkala Ilmiah Pendidikan Fisika, 2019

Scientific literacy skill is a key factor for overcoming real-life problems, but scientific literacy learning in schools has not been well trained. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning (PBL) in improving students scientific literacy skills and scientific attitudes. This research was part of research and development, with the Dick & Carey model. The research trial used one group pre-test and post-test design on 29 students of XI IPA 1 class in SMAN 5 Banjarmasin. The instruments of data collection were a scientific literacy test and scientific attitude questionnaires. Data were analyzed by the n-gain equation. The results showed that the n-gain score of students scientific literacy and scientific attitudes were 0.55 and 0.57; it means the increase was in moderate criteria. Therefore, PBL is effective to improve students scientific literacy skills and scientific attitudes.

The Effect of Problem Based Learning Based Sosio-Scientific Issues on Scientific Literacy and Problem-Solving Skills of Junior High School Students

Journal of Science Education Research

This study aims to analyze the effect of the Sosio-Scientific Issues (SSI) based Problem Based Learning (PBL) on increasing scientific literacy and problem-solving skills of junior high school students. The type of research is Quasi experiment with Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population included class VII Junior High School of 6 Yogyakarta that consisting of seven classes in the 2019/2020 school year. The sample is determined by the Purposive Sampling technique. The research instruments were pretest and posttest questions of scientific literacy and students' problem-solving skills. Hypothesis testing is done with MANOVA and effect size calculation to find out how much influence is given. Based on the MANOVA test, the Sig value is 0,000 that

The Effectiveness of Physics Interactive Modules Based on Problem Solving Models with SETS (Science Environment Technology society) insight in developing students' scientific literacy

International Conference on Islamic Education ICIE 2019 Faculty of Islamic Education and Teacher Training Universitas Islam Negeri Imam Bonjol Padang, 2019

The purpose of this research was to see the effectiveness of the use of interactive physics modules based on problem solving models with SETS insight in developing students' scientific literacy. Science literacy was observed in aspects of scientific competence and scientific knowledge. The study used a descriptive method with respondents in class XI students of SMAN 9 Padang. The instrument used was a questionnaire with a Likert scale. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. The results showed an interactive physics module based on problem solving models with SETS insight effectively developed the scientific literacy skills of students. Scientific competence which includes aspects of the ability to explain phenomena scientifically with an achievement of 93.07%, the ability to design and evaluate scientific investigations at 87.97%, the ability to interpret data and facts in a scientific manner 94.22%. Scientific knowledge includes aspects of scientific knowledge with 92.22% achievements and reasoning knowledge aspects with 89.97% achievements. The interactive physics module based on problem solving models with SETS insight could be used by teachers to develop students' scientific literacy.

THE ANALYSIS OF RESEARCHS AND TEACHERS RESPONSE ABOUT SCIENTIFIC LITERACY AS THE BASIS OF DEVELOPING A COMPUTER-BASED PHYSICS LITERACY TEST.

Scientific literacy ability is required as in line with technology progression for the improvement of knowledge. Quality of scientific literacy for countries in the world is known by PISA to evaluate the education for students at the ages of 15. Except PISA, many scientific literacy researches were already developed in Indonesia, but they were not balance for each education levels. This research was to study scientific literacy research by journals and analyze the result of physics teacher?s questioner about the physics literacy of senior high schoolstudents. Based on the analysis, researches about scientific literacy in senior high school were not found as many as in junior level, especially for Physics subject. Because Indonesians National Examination is computer-based test, so it needed a trial for student to do the test by using computer. Therefore, researcher needs an instrument developed to investigate the physics literacy of students with a computer-based test.
