Language Preservation and Development: The Role of the Library (original) (raw)
Related papers
The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss four approaches which support actions in favor of endangered language preservation and maintenance. Preservation, on the one hand, refers to the process of documenting and storing information which can later on be accessed by the public; whereas maintenance, on the other, implies a support for the users of the language to prevent its disappearance by encouraging its use. Each of the approaches is assessed on its priority in one or the other form of language protection, drawing on their justifications and main goals. Finally, conclusions are brought forth regarding the potential uses of the different approaches.
The aim of this paper is to show the manifold use of language despite its formal and structural importance. Language serves the communicative, societal, political, religious, economic and educational tasks. Languages cannot be imprisoned only in the wall of its structures…………..the empirical side of it, is volatile, flexible……………. A language as we see is the medium of communication, the very simple way of calling it. A language as it is maintained at all the levels or domains- social, political, religious, cultural, educational and from grassroots to the higher levels. The communication takes place as there are reasons and there is a way to express the reasons. What serves the purpose at that time? A language; which can also be called a way, a medium to convey you to the other person serves its vital purpose. You are understood as the right codes are being transmitted to you and the listener vice-versa. The codes or the linguistic items comprised of sounds, words, and sentences.
Preserving local languages ref 2
The interrelationship between Indigenous languages and knowledge is both schematic and formal. It requires a high degree of generalisation and is usually steeped into the dichotomy of whether indigenous languages precede indigenous knowledge. In other words, can there be indigenous knowledge without indigenous language? This is a controversial interrelationship that usually raises more questions than answers; however, learned opinion favours a positive answer. Indigenous languages are an intangible heritage that predetermine and preserve for posterity, indigenous knowledge. Libraries should provide those with verbal fluency and political power, retentive memories and intimate knowledge of poetic forms space to document their intellect for posterity.
Library: its basic role in the protection and valorization of Written documentary heritage
Etudes Interdisciplinaires en Sciences humaines, 2020
The library is the institution known to have as its basic mission the creation, processing, preservation of the written documentary heritage. Libraries express the metaphorical memory of humanity. Over time, libraries have been involved in preserving the cultural heritage of humanity. In ancient, medieval, Renaissance and modern times, the patrimonial mission was their core mission and their prestige in the community was given by the richness and importance of collections. In the contemporary period, the user has access to information and the patrimonial role is expressed through the management of special collections and the preservation for future generations of rare and valuable documents of cultural and scientific importance. The work exemplifies the patrimonial function of the libraries through the case of the National Library of Romania.
Toward a global infrastructure for the sustainability of language resources
2008
This paper describes work the Open Language Archives Community (OLAC) is doing to contribute to a global infrastructure for the sustainability of language resources. After offering a definition of language resource, it addresses the issue of what makes language resources sustainable by defining six necessary and sufficient conditions for their sustained use, then discusses what it takes to make such sustainability a reality by describing the roles of four key sets of players-creators, archives, aggregators, users. With this background, the paper describes the community infrastructure OLAC has developed for allowing its members to express consensus about best practices for digital archiving, plus the technical infrastructure it has developed to provide aggregation and search for the language resources community. The concluding section probes the broader issue of sustainable development to consider the sustainability of language resources in the context of the sustainability of language development and of languages themselves.
Saving languages: An introduction to language revitalization
2006
Language endangerment has been the focus of much attention over the past few decades, and as a result a wide range of people are now working to revitalize and maintain local languages. This book serves as a general reference guide to language revitalization, written not only for linguists and anthropologists, but also for language activists and community members who believe they should ensure the future use of their languages, despite their predicted loss. Drawing extensively on case studies, it sets out the necessary background and highlights central issues such as literacy, policy decisions, and allocation of resources. Its primary goal is to provide the essential tools for a successful language revitalization program, such as setting and achieving realistic goals, and anticipating and resolving common obstacles. Clearly written and informative, Saving Languages will be an invaluable resource for all those interested in the fate of small language communities around the globe.
Novel Traditions of Library as Societal Culture Conservation
PUSTABIBLIA: Journal of Library and Information Science
Library is not only a space for displaying books, but there are many important values within. The paradigm of library has been shifted from books oriented into user oriented meaning library is as sources of information. Besides that, library plays its roles as an institution of cultural heritage conservators in maintaining cultural values, and revitalizing the tradition. In this technology era, this article tries to explain the interesting phenomena in the libraries of the State Institute for Islamic Studies (PTKIN) in Indonesia concerning the history of the emergence and development of such novel traditions including Online Research Skill (ORS) and Writing Skill (RS).
