The study involves a comparative analysis of cultural tourism in Bucharest and Paris to identify the main aspects of sustainable cultural tourism. A set of six characteristics (civil monuments and architectural assemblies, religious monuments and architectural assemblies, festivals, personalities, digitization of tourism, and cultural and educational institutions) was analyzed for both cities. For this purpose, the Benchmarking analysis, the SWOT analysis, and the Pareto analysis were used. The research results highlight the importance of a careful analysis of the categories and sub-categories identified for cultural tourism in the two cities, focusing on the situation in Bucharest to identify ways to improve the promotion and capitalization of cultural tourism and increase sustainability. Cultural and Heritage Tourism: A Tool for Sustainable Development
Global Journal of Commerce & Management Perspective, 2017
The relationship between culture, heritage, the environment and tourism is very important. It is the culture and heritage that separate the people of the world. We need to create stronger links between historic sites and monuments, indigenous people in the host community. Culture and heritage sums up a community's beliefs and values-shared behaviour acquired as the result of living within a group and a defined geographic area. Cultural heritage linked with tourism could be an important sustainability tool. There should be increased tourism development, with full participation, management and ownership of indigenous people and without having negative impacts on indigenous peoples and other local communities and ecosystems of which they are a part. In the year 1987, Brundtland report outlined the concept of sustainability which involves "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Tourism is recognized as one of the world's largest industries and continues to expand at a rapid rate. Over 922 million people travelled in 2008 and it is estimated international tourism will increase to 1.1 billion by 2020. So, economic development cannot stop, but it must change course to fit within the planet's ecological limits. Tourism is based on interaction, interaction prompts dialogue and dialogue builds mutual understanding and peace. Thus, we can look forward to nourishing the balance of universe through tourism and culture.
Sustainable cultural and heritage tourism in regional development
This study aims to analyze the potential of cultural tourism in regional development. After reviewing the literature it is proposed to conduct an analysis of cultural tourism to discuss and establish the potential target market. The use of a normative analysis approach is a valuable framework to design tools for planning and operation of sustainable cultural and heritage tourism. The normative model proves to be useful for development strategies. The limitations are derived basically from the availability of data in a region where has not been any previous systematic strategy to develop sustainable cultural and heritage tourism. The research provides the planning premises of the economic regional development strategies centered on the available resources and capabilities to exploit a sustainable cultural and heritage tourism. It has positive impacts on developing infrastructure, creating opportunities to attract foreign investors and funding agencies, designing and implementing marketing and promotional strategies and offering diversified products and services in the cultural tourism market. The research has social-spatial implications on development of entrepreneurial skills of the community, creating employment and improving better standards of life for the people. There has not been any previous research contributing to increase regional economic development. It provides a valuable frameworks and tools for regional economic development.
Sustainable Tourism and Culture: A Symbiotic Relationship
Environmental Science and Sustainable Development, 2020
Cultural Tourism offers a strong motivation to preserve the elements of cultural heritage in tourist destinations. It helps to preserve cultural elements as important tourist attractions. Cultural tourism's notion is unlimited to visiting monumental attractions only, but it has also become an interactive experience with the social fabric of the community through attending exhibitions, festivals and events, and the purchase of traditional local products. Thus, the human capital factor in tourism is linked to the quality of tourism products. With the growth of international tourism, the importance of sustainable tourism development has emerged to protect natural, cultural, and human resources, in addition to achieving economic development. As non-sustainable tourism development has led to the deterioration of tourism resources. This research paper examines if cultural tourism contributes to decrease tourism seasonality and achieve sustainable tourism development in cultural heritage sites. A case study of Aswan was selected. Aswan has unique and important elements of cultural heritage (Tangible and Intangible), but it still faces many problems like tourism seasonality, besides its tourism is still weak compared with other cities that have the same tourism potential. Based on a literature review and analytical study of global examples that achieved sustainability in cultural heritage sites, a field study of Aswan was conducted to evaluate the current status of cultural tourism, besides illustrating the challenges of achieving sustainability. The major result that has emerged from the study is paying attention to cultural tourism is the possible solution to the challenges that Aswan tourism faces. Finally, the paper concluded that investment in human capital creates opportunities for cultural tourism which in return resolves one of tourism's major challenges: seasonality.
Local Perspectives on Cultural Tourism and Cultural Sustainability
Handbook of Research on Cultural Tourism and Sustainability, 2022
The objective of the chapter is to explore cultural tourism perceptions, practices, concerns, and prospects among local residents and business representatives in the Cyclades, specifically three sites (Andros, Syros, and Santorini), and to draw their implications for local cultural sustainability. For this purpose, it relies methodologically on an on-site intensive questionnaire survey, effectuated in the context of the SPOT HORIZON2020 EU project (2020-22) on cultural tourism. The findings show that the role of culture as an actual tourism attraction and the potential for further growth in cultural tourism, and consequently in local development, are broadly recognized from all sides involved in the survey. Conversely, the role of tourism in these destinations' cultural development, management, and appropriation is viewed with some trepidation and ambivalence, while, in the relative absence of the state, local residents and tourism- or culture-related businesses appear to have t...
