A Behavioural Observation of Street Liveliness in Meldrum Walk, Johor Bahru of Malaysia

2013

On Malaysian streets nowadays, main priority is given to vehicular elements, which seems to comprise the functional qualities of urban public space for human interaction. To perk up such streets, “pedestrianisation” results in making a city centre pedestrian- friendly, and expedites the preservation of historical districts. Problem statement: Existence of people engaging in a variety of sustained and social activities can makes a street lively. Approach: As liveliness involves levels of activities, uses, interactions and their representation, current research appraises street liveliness through behavioral observation of sustained pedestrians’ activities in Meldrum Walk. Result: The data on traffic modes, walking and sustained pedestrians of diverse age groups and genders, different types of activities, postures, over different times of day and night analyzed. Conclusion: Proposing a wider range of attractions and opportunities for activities besides walking, working and shopping for...

THE INFLUENCE OF WALKABILITY TOWARDS URBAN STREET DESIGN IN KUALA LUMPUR, 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Urban Design for Liveable Cities (SUDLIC 2017), 10 October 2017, Kuala Lumpur

UTM Razak School, 2017

Automobiles have been the main driving factor of urban planning in recent decades. As a result, the automobile has started to become an ironic icon of travel pattern within the city centre. This has caused a lot of issues, but the main issue covered in this research paper is to examine the physical characteristics which contribute towards the walkability of a street in Kuala Lumpur. Streets in Kuala Lumpur have been prioritized for automobiles and this causes issues in the general walkability of the city. For the research to gauge the perception of walkability, a case study was conducted in a district that provided an opportunity to analyse the walking behaviour of pedestrians in a variety of urban built environment. Kampung Baru, one of the districts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was taken up for a primary case study as it functioned like an urban laboratory with both traditional and modern settlements in the same vicinity. The street selected for the research is a minor one, however it acts as a shortcut between two of the main roads within the district. The selected street is based on usage by pedestrians was studied through behavioural observation and public surveys to understand the underlying factors that led to how a street should be designed. The results showed that the most important factors affecting pedestrians' perception of walkability were related to the built envelop on either side of the streets. Factors relating to urban morphology like enclosure block length and edge conditions were found crucial in creating perception of a walkable street.

The vitality of a pedestrian street in Johor Bahru City

2015

In Malaysia, similar to other parts of the world, majority of urban development occurs along the streets. On the other hand, streets involve much of public life in each city and creating successful streets has been always desired, since socially activating streets are crucial for the users and the sustainability of the cities, they belong. Considering the recent improvements of the physical contexts in a traditional street of Malaysia, this study aims to investigate the social vitality status of Meldrum Walk, in which the priority is given to non-motorised users. The main focus of the study is on the current users, the ways they participate and the activities they involve, together with the purposes of their involvement in that street. Structured behavioral observation and questionnaire survey are the two methods applied for this study.

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY Published by Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Users' Perceptions on Pedestrian Prioritized Neighborhoods: a study on Terrace Row Housing Estates in Malaysia

Malaysia is currently enjoying an overhang of housing supply. The focus is gradually shifting from providing just a mere shelter to something more socially. Terrace row housing estates in Malaysia is the major prototype of housing in the country. Pedestrian activities are catalyst to social interaction, but have been ignored in this model. During the last century, motor age established the supremacy of car prioritized models over that of pedestrians around the world, Malaysia has not been an exception. The adverse social impact of such models led many countries to come up with new or retrofitted models. Such studies have not been done enough in Malaysian context. This study at first searched for residents' perception on social interaction, and then went on to measure their responses on different context specific urban design elements that have the capacity to generate and sustain pedestrian activity inside these communities. A questionnaire survey containing both structured and ...

The Effect of Socio-Demographic Attributes on Walking Behaviour of Residents in Shah Alam City, Malaysia

PLANNING MALAYSIA

Walking is the most common form of physical activity people engages in. However, people walk for different purposes, which most times are influenced by environmental, and socio-economic factors operational within a particular setting. Literature on walking behaviour is dominated by physical environment factors with little mention of socio-demographic factors. Therefore, this study examined the influence of socio-demographic attributes on two categories of walking behaviour: the utilitarian and recreational walking. Through an online survey, 320 copies of the questionnaire were purposefully administered to adults of 18 years old and above in Shah Alam City, Malaysia. A multiple linear regression analysis technique was adopted in identifying the predictors (sociodemographic attributes) that significantly influenced the utilitarian and recreational walking behaviour of respondents. Findings revealed that monthly income (β=-.350, p<0.05), educational qualification (β=.187, p<0.05)...

Investigating the effect of sidewalk flooring on the behavioral pattern (walking) of citizens in urban spaces (Case Study: Vali asr St., Tehran)

Journal of Construction Research

The present study has evaluated the effect of architectural forms on the walking activity ofcitizens as a behavioral model in urban physical spaces. The research hypothesis claims that bydesigning purposeful and appropriate architectural forms, the behavior and actions of users in urbanphysical spaces can be to some extent, it designed or controlled, and that the pattern and domains ofhuman behavior in urban streets are the result of the components of environmental quality that areincluded in the design of that street. The present theoretical proposition has been tested in two sequencesfrom Valiasr Street in Tehran. At the theoretical level, the research method is descriptive-analytical andat the experimental level, it is a survey that has been done using the behavioral research method. Theresults show that the floor form and street form are the most influential architectural forms in urbanphysical spaces on the activity of users walking from space in the study sample. Also, someenv...

An Analysis of Environment Behavior Relationships towards the Design of a Local Mixed-used Street: Based on Behavior Settings of Belgium Street in Cebu City, Philippines

Sustainability, 2018

Streets function as public spaces that improve the aspects of social sustainability by accommodating the daily activities of people, further contributing to the strengthening of relationships in society and the expansion of people's social networks. This research focuses on studying the relationship of human behavior and the street environment in Cebu, Philippines, which can help to contribute to a better approach towards street improvements. Filipino behavior settings were identified and classified based upon people's activities on the street that were gathered using the Behavior Mapping Method. From the analysis of behavior settings on the behavior maps, the current use of the street has been classified into zones, and has shown potential for street sharing by being flexible enough to accommodate both behavior settings and vehicular traffic at different times. Based on the findings of the analysis, design proposals were created as an interview tool to extract information from respondents on the street. From the results of the interviews, considerations such as the importance of preserving the existing behavior settings, promoting safety, and preventing conflicts on the street can be used to develop an improved street design.
