Stability analysis of transmission system with high penetration of distributed generation
2006
Nowadays, interest in generating electricity using decentralized generators of relatively small scale ('distributed generation', DG) is increasing. This work deals with the impact of implementing DG on the transmission system transient stability, with the emphasis on a potential transition from a 'vertical power system' to a 'horizontal power system. A problem in power systems is maintaining synchronous operation of all (centralized) synchronous machines. This stability problem associated is called rotor angle stability. In this work, the impact of the DG implementation on this is investigated. The impact of DG levels on the system transient stability when the increasing DG level is followed by a reduction of centralized generators in service resulting in a 'vertical to horizontal' transformation of the power system is also investigated. Furthermore, a stochastic analysis is used to study the transient stability of the power systems. The results show that...

Distributed Generation is increasing in nowadays power systems. Small scale systems such as photovoltaic, biomass or small cogeneration plants are connected to the distribution level, while large wind farms will be connected to the transmission level. Both trends lead to a replacement of large synchronous generators as the dominating generation technology. Up to now, transient stability of transmission systems has been analysed to a satisfactory degree of accuracy with a simplified representation of the distribution systems. In future, distributed generation will more and more influence the behaviour of the system. Stiff, inverter-based local generation technologies may improve the system stability; however, increasing electrical distances between large synchronous generators in operation will impede the system stability. These (and other) diverging effects have to be studied in detail. This overview paper summarises the latest findings and reveals future research questions. It is concluded that the accuracy and validity of the currently applied dynamic models for transient stability analysis of power systems with high penetration of DG should be further investigated.

In this paper the impact of the protection scheme of converterconnected (power electronic-interfaced) Distributed Generation (DG) on power system transient stability is investigated. Two simulation setups are used for this purpose. In the first setup, a small/simple test system is used and the converter-connected DG is modelled as a practical three-phase full-bridge Voltage Source Converter (VSC). In the latter, a medium-size power system is considered and the converter-connected DG is represented as simple PQ source. In both setups, two possible protection schemes of converter-connected DG are studied. The first one disconnects the DG from the power network during a fault, while the second one keeps the DG connected. The impact of the protection scheme of converter-connected DG
TRANSIENT STABILITY ANALYSIS OF DISTRIBUTED GENERATION
The commonly used distributed generation technologies include wind generators, photo voltaic and biomass generators with their sizes varying between KW to a few MW. Due to increased demand in power supply the role of these distributed generators become inevitable in power systems. This work deals with analyzing the transient stability indicators i.e., the variation of distributed generator terminal voltage, load side terminal voltage and rotor speed during different fault conditions when it is connected to the electric grid along with storage device (lithium-ion battery). Three bus test system is considered for the analysis and MATLAB / Simulink power systems tool is used as a software tool to show the performance.

Impacts of Distributed Generators on the Oscillatory Stability of Interconnected Power Systems
Integration of distributed generation is continually and gradually aecting the stability of intercon- nected power systems. In this paper, the impacts of distributed synchronous generators on oscillatory stability are studied. In various parameter sub-spaces of interest, feasibility regions can be calculated to determine the conditions to sustain the stable operation of an interconnected power system. Through com- putations of the feasibility boundaries corresponding to Hopf bifurcations of electromechanical oscillatory modes, we determine the operating limits for a stable operation of the system under small and contin- ual disturbances such as predictable changes in loading conditions of generators. Thus, with the case studies given in the paper, under dierent operating conditions, we investigate the eects of distributed synchronous generators on the oscillatory small-signal stability. It has been shown that penetrations of these generators can cause local or inter-area oscillatory...
Transient angular stability on medium voltage distribution systems with distributed generation
Journal of Scientific and Technical Applications, 2021
The dynamic behaviour of a 32 MW gas-turbine generating unit, connected to the 23 kV main busbar of a substation, is analysed in this article. The study is focused on the representative faults occurring in an electrical system and allows the determination of the maximum times in with a fault must be delivered to maintain the stability of generator. A three-phase power network is modelled with the Alternative Transients Program (ATP). Simulation results are reported and analysed for typical variables of interest such as machine rotor angle, frequency, and power. According to the study results, machine stability is greatly affected by three-phase faults, as compared to the dynamic behaviour under single-phase faults. The analysis carried out is useful to improve and maintain the security of operation of the electrical grid and in aligned to the current regulations and recent reforms of the Mexican electric sector. The fact that the performed study was usually not mandatory but has bee...

This paper analyzing influence of distributed generation (DG) on transient stability of power system network operating parallel with large renewable energy resources (RES) power plant. The study is performed in hypothetical power system network envision in the future which contains a large number of DG. Network behavior when subjected to disturbance is compared with different level of DG penetration. The results are compared with the performance of the network without DG and RES power plant as a reference case. It can be concluded that addition of DG and RES power plant makes power system network more transiently stable. This integration enhances the power system network capability in handling more larger disturbances.
Transient Stability of Asynchronous Generator on Distribution Network
– Dispersed generation (DG) brings together wide range of technologies for electricity production. Most frequently used electric machines for electricity production at each technology that belongs to DG group are: synchronous generators, asynchronous generators (AG) and power converters. This paper deals with transient stability of AG. Typical model of distribution network (DN) is developed with AG connected to it. The modelling and simulation are performd with NEPLAN and MATLAB/SIMULINK/Simpowersystems toolbox software packages. AG with squirrel cage is used. Several short circuits are simulated in order to investigate dynamic behaviour of AG. Following parameters are analyzed: rotor speed, active and reactive power, and currents of AG. Critical clearing time is calculated for keeping stable operation of AG. Several useful and practical conclusions are obtained.
— Presently, the grid accommodates several mixed energies so as to improve power generation and cater for demand which is ever increasing. These energy sources interact with each other and with the existing grid. Due to the complementary nature of most renewable energy and the mixed dynamics associated with them coupled with the bi directional power flow, transient stability based on single source will not give the overall assessment of the network. This paper presents the impact of hybrid Solar PV-Wind and Small Hydro distributed generation on transient stability of power system so as to take advantages of their complementary roles. To investigate this impact, a detail modeling of grid connected wind / solar PV and small hydropower system with single machine infinite system is carried out. The configuration of the proposed typical grid connected hybrid distributed generation (HDG) consists of hybrid Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), solar PV and small hydropower system. DFIG is integrated through PWM converter into the existing grid while the solar PV consisting of DC sources is integrated through PWM inverter and the hydro power is directly connected through a synchronous generator. The simulation was done in DIgSILENT power factory software
