World Electric Vehicle Journal
Electric vehicles (EVs) were introduced into the South African market in 2013, and their adoption rate has been very low. There are limited existing studies covering consumer perceptions towards EVs in Africa and, thus, this study investigated possible socio-economic barriers present in the South African automotive market that impede the adoption or consumer purchase intention of EVs. The survey was conducted in the Gauteng Province in South Africa using questionnaires comprised of Likert-type questions. The analysis was conducted using statistical methods comprising mainly of frequency tables and Chi-squared tests on contingency tables. The findings of the study on barriers to adoption of EVs in the market highlighted the high purchase price, high battery price, and high likelihood for owning a secondary vehicle based on the current circumstances as the main purchase intention barriers that the respondents in the Gauteng Province accentuated. However, generally the willingness to b...

The purpose of the study was to investigate perceptions towards the possible acceptance of electric vehicles (EVs) in an emerging market such as South Africa. Data was collected in Johannesburg, South African from 380 respondents and analysed in SPSS 29 and AMOS 29 where descriptive statistics and hypotheses testing were conducted respectively. Key findings establish that potential customers trust and value EVs making them a feasible alternative for fuel-powered vehicles. However, it is important to note that concerns are raised about the potential risks associated with introducing such vehicles to the South African motor vehicle market. The study proposes future research direction on the subject.
Atmosphere
There are genuine worldwide concerns regarding the contribution of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Passenger electric vehicles (EVs) are considered as a viable solution to the rapidly increasing global GHG emissions from ICE vehicles. This study investigated the future impact of perceived adoption of electric vehicles in Gauteng Province of South Africa on carbon emissions. Estimations of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions were made with data from 2000 to 2018 to provide a reference period for the analysis. Projections of CO2 emissions from 2020 to 2030 were undertaken using three future cases, namely: mitigation, business as usual, and high economic growth based on the projected 20% population of electric vehicles, and four scenarios representing varying proportions of different types of EVs. The results showed an increasingly significant trend in CO2 emissions during the reference period. CO2 emissions estimated using the mitigation case sh...
People’s Attitudes Towards Use of Electric Cars in Aotearoa New Zealand
Asia-Pacific - Annual Research Journal of Far East & South East Asia
This study aims to explore the attitudes and perception of people and their intention to use the electric cars based on its cost, usefulness, satisfaction, enjoyment, ease of use and their expectation from government in the form of subsidies to the owners of electric cars, which finally results in their purchase intentions. A descriptive research design is used for this study and the data have been collected from 203 participants from New Zealand. A survey method was used and the questionnaire was developed. The results of the survey indicate that a higher percentage of the respondents are ready to embark on the use of electric cars and the only factor that acts as a constraint in their buying interest is the cost of the car. It is also evident from the results that people are concerned about environmental sustainability and with a little push from the government can convince the people and can initiate their switch to electric cars.
International Journal of Economics and Financial Issues
Due to political instabilities, limited non-renewable resources and international conflicts, the energy industry has been subject to high volatilities in the last few years. This had negative effects on many developing economies, namely those importing most of their energy needs from other countries (i.e., Morocco). More recently, the high increases in energy prices have renewed interests and discussions related to the adoption of electric vehicles. The current study aims to examine Moroccan consumers’ perceptions and intentions to use electric cars (EV), an era marked by increasing cost of gasoline and other energy sources. Our study proposes an integrated model combining both contextual and technological factors that influence Moroccan consumer’s Perceived value and purchasing intention of electric vehicles. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire from 203 Moroccan respondents and the findings were analyzed using the partial least squares (PLS) technique. Our fi...
Consumers’ Intention to Purchase Electric Vehicles: Influences of User Attitude and Perception
Sustainability
Electric vehicles (EVs) have been developed as an efficient solution to reduce automobile emissions. To ensure the effective diffusion of EVs in current transport systems, it is vital to understand the factors affecting consumers’ intentions to purchase EVs. To provide insights for this understanding, this study aims to investigate such factors with a particular focus on users’ attitudes and perceptions. A questionnaire survey was conducted in September 2019 among potential consumers in the major cities of South Korea. A total of 1500 valid survey responses were obtained, and investigations using binary logistic regression and regression tree were conducted for an empirical analysis. The results showed that among attitudinal attributes, environmental and economic perceptions concerning EV use were the strongest predictors for an EV purchase. In addition, technological concerns were found to have negative impacts on EV purchase intentions. The findings of this study could provide rea...
The Adoption of Electric Vehicles: Challenges and Issues for a Future Research Agenda
Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) grew rapidly in recent years. The vast literature on EV adoption, however, has generated regional, mixed, and sometimes contradictory results. A careful examination of the literature reveals overreliance on quantitative research methods and a dearth of qualitative, exploratory studies. The mixed findings may not stem directly from flaws in research methodology or research design, but rather reflect the inherent nature of the domain being studied. A research agenda in the tradition of qualitative, grounded theory is proposed.
