Being a mother of children with ADHD and the problems it causes to mothers
New Trends and Issues Proceedings on Humanities and Social Sciences, 2019
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in the childhood period. In the children, the symptoms of this disorder are reluctance to tasks that require attention, disorganisation, losing things frequently, forgetting homework, restlessness, being unable to wait their turn and so on. Those children, who are hyperactive, impulsive and distracted, might experience severe problems in their relationship with their families, parents, peers and friends. Compared to the parents of normal children, the parents of children with ADHD, especially the mothers who play a more active role in child care, are more likely to suffer from stress, anxiety and depression in the course of time. Therefore, in order to protect family functionality and provide a healthy communication between the parents and the child, it is crucial to raise parents', in particular mothers', awareness on ADHD and its treatment for the evaluation of parents' psychological state and referring them to a specialist, if necessary.

The goal of this study is to develop a training program for parents of children with attention deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD) and to examine the effect of this program on reduction of ADHD symptoms and family function. In this quasi-experimental research, 24 parents of children with ADHD are selected through a cluster random sampling method and are assigned randomly into two experiment and control groups (12 in each group).ADHD, parental stress, and parenting styles are respectively evaluated utilizing DSM-IV (2000) criteria, PSI/SF (Abidin, 1983, cited in Strachan, 2005), and Robinson's et al., (2000) Parenting Styles Questionnaire. The data analysis using ANCOVA and MANOVA revealed that this program could improve stress level and parenting styles. No significant difference was observed for reduction of ADHD symptoms. Accordingly, it can be concluded that this program is useful for improving family function.

Background: There are several steps involved in deciding if a child has ADHD. No single test is available to diagnose ADHD and many other problems such as depression, anxiety, sleep problems and certain types of learning disabilities can also have similar symptoms. One of the process involves doing a medical examination, including hearing and vision tests, to rule out other problems with symptoms like ADHD. Diagnosis of ADHD includes a checklist for rating ADHD symptoms and taking a history of the child from parents, teachers, and sometimes, the child itself. Aim & Objectives: To know the prevalence of psychiatric co-morbidities in ADHD and to assess parental stress and parenting style among parents of children having ADHD. Material & Methods: A total of 78 children (6 to 18 years of age) and their parents were selected for the completion this study. The study was carried out in the Department of Psychiatry, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. Bivariate table and chi-square/Fisher Exact test were used. Correlation test has also been applied to know the association between demographic variables and their responses. Results: ? Conclusions: We conclude that specific scales of the CBCL may help to identify specific comorbidities within ADHD cases in the primary care setting.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) is a developmental condition that involves problems with inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity inconsistent with the age of the child.. The affected child often has difficulty learning, giving rise to special educational needs that, combined with poor peer and family relationship. In fact, having a child with ADHD is correlated with significant increases in the amount of parent stress that is experienced.Parents of children with ADHD also report less helpful social support and having fewer outside resources may increase the family burden of effectively overcoming the child's disruptive behaviors. Therefore, parents' psycho-education programs must be carried out in groups to help children as well as their parents how to deal with their difficulties. This study adopted a descriptive survey method to investigate the views of parents on education and healthcare services provided to the children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and help them explain their views in their own words. The sample was composed of 25 parents of children diagnosed with ADHD, who were attending primary schools in Konya city center. A semi-structured interview form was used for parent interviews. The data were analysed through content analysis. The results revealed that according to the parents' views, the service provided to the children mostly included either healthcare or education services, but a very little number of children received both services. The great majority of the families stated that the medicines that their children were prescribed increased their attention; however, negatively affected their social development. The parents expressed their opinion that a training programme for parents should be arranged and multimodal interventions should be provided.
