Abstract: Lean manufacturing is a proven approach for success in manufacturing industry. However, several organisations failed in their attempt to implement lean manufacturing system. The transition to lean manufacturing requires radical change which involves a total reshaping of purpose, system and culture of the organisation. The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework that could assist a manufacturing firm to implement lean manufacturing system successfully.

Many companies have adopted the Lean Culture with success but a large number has failed when attempting this goal. As companies try to implement and apply Lean in response to competitive pressures, they often become one-dimensional in their approach. As the main purpose, this document seeks to study and analyse the underlying reasons surrounding companies’ failures in their Lean initiatives and how to implement them in a successful and sustainable way. This document is based on a thorough literature research concerning the success and failure of Lean implementations, enriched through an assortment of individual interviews with Lean experts, acting as a precursor for the development of a novel roadmap as a practical guide to open up a window of opportunity for managers, who want to become Lean in an effective and sustainable way.

Manufacturing industries require continuous improvement process to perform better and withstand the intense global competition. Lean manufacturing or lean production is one of the most popular paradigms in process improvement. Lean philosophy is implemented by organizations worldwide but its implantation is snail-paced in India and needs to be augmented. Based on a systematic literature review and by performing a case study on lean implementation, this paper presents a detailed analysis of lean philosophy in manufacturing industries. Numerous benefits and shortcomings associated with lean implementation are explained in this paper. This paper presents the case studies on lean implementation performed by researchers over the years using various tools and methodologies for the review and understanding of most effective lean tools, benefits and shortcomings of lean production system (LPS). The authors have performed and presented a case study on lean implementation in a manufacturing industry to realize its benefits and shortcomings. The proposed work provides required preliminary information for lean implementation in manufacturing industries. Factors that hinder lean implementation are identified which must be sorted for successful implementation of lean principles in any manufacturing organization.

This perception is not readily accepted among those with management responsibility in organizations that have seen growth, very good performance and remarkable profits for several consecutive years. So, why is there is so much noise about lean production and why should a successful company change their mode of operations in order to become lean? Is there perhaps a kind of fashion, a trend of the times that sometimes pushes enterprises without any real reason to follow that trend? This chapter addresses the issue.

The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework that could assist a manufacturing firm to implement lean manufacturing system successfully. The insights of literature and multiple case studies are combined to develop the organisational change framework. Leadership and direction, and change agent system found to be the most critical factors in managing change to lean manufacturing. Furthermore, the smooth transition also requires effective communication, workers' empowerment and lean review system. Failure in recognising the required organisational change factors to be adapted in lean transition may hinder the long-term benefits of the company.

In this paper, we will analyze the concept of lean manufacturing, starting from the example illustrated by TPS (Toyota Production System) which is renowned for its focus on the reduction of the original Toyota seven waists in order to improve overall customer value, in spite of the existence of varying perspectives on how this is best achieved. The steady growth of Toyota, from a small company to the world's largest automaker (Bailey, 2008) has focused its attention on how it has achieved this success. It is a starting template that was also developed by other automotive makers, and not only. We will also identify the main elements of lean philosophy and propose a typology of the fundamental concepts of lean, using data analysis from research findings across studies on lean manufacturing and lean production published in the past two decades.
