Ons het emosies met hoofletters!' : Swart Koring as wilful repossession of popular romance (original) (raw)
2020
Abstract
In 1996 writes Hambidge, true to the “omnibus” tradition so popular amongst genre fiction, five novelettes, each in the style of a different genre of popular fiction, and all with Sonja Verbeek as main character. The title Swart Koring is a reference to Tryna du Toit’s Groen Koring (1948) – one of the seminal popular romance texts in Afrikaans. While the plot follows the expected developments of the respective popular genres, it queers and, yes, at the same time celebrates the different forms of ‘low literature’.
