DEVELOPING YOUNG LEARNERS' LISTENING SKILLS THROUGH SONGS

Listening skill is regarded as the most important outcome of early language teaching and songs are regarded as one of the best ways for practicing and developing the listening skills of especially young learners. Therefore, any syllabus designed for teaching foreign languages to young learners specifically focuses on the listening skill in general and contains songs as effective listening materials. The purpose of this theoretical study is to present a theoretical structure by reviewing the relevant literature in relation to the importance of the listening skill for young foreign language learners and to discuss the importance, advantages, and teaching procedures of songs as listening activities. Research shows that the necessary time is not being devoted to listening comprehension activities in the teaching of modern foreign languages in Turkey and students are unable to reach the targets about listening comprehension mentioned in the curriculum. Therefore it is concluded in this study that the development of listening skills should be given priority in the Turkish context as in many European countries and that the use of songs as listening materials should be promoted.

Folk songs, reflections of cultures in languages, are considered as one of the facilitating factors of learning a foreign language because they are cultural heritage about happenings, common feelings like love, longing, homesickness, national characters and annals. There are several studies on Turkish as a foreign language (TFL) but no study on the place of wedding concept in Turkish Folk Songs was encountered. Effect of Turkish Lyrical Music on Vocabulary Acquisition and Long Term Retention

MJAL, 2017

In most studies, a critical importance of vocabulary acquisition in ESL or EFL is not deniable. Wilkins (1972) uttered that “while without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed” (pp.111–112). The current study is to investigate the effect of using lyrical music on foreign language vocabulary acquisition and its effect on long term retention of vocabulary in Turkish language course in Urmia, Iran. For this purpose sixty male BA and MA university students with the range of 22 to 27 ages were selected and assigned to two groups of thirty. The first group as an experimental group (n=30) was taught the new words through music and the second one as a control group (n=30) received the traditional vocabulary instruction. The two main research hypotheses were: music has not any effects on vocabulary acquisition of students and music has no effects on long term retention of vocabulary. After the treatment, the same vocabulary post-test was administered to the groups. The data analysis through the statistical T-test indicated that the experimental group outperformed the control group in vocabulary acquisition and the in long term retention. As a result, the null hypotheses were rejected in this study.
